The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports an inmate at the Pott. County Jail was charged with possessing contraband (.7-gram of Meth in a baggie), inside the jail facility. 23-year old Omar Gastelum Moreno, of Council Bluffs, was read the charge against him, and returned to his cell. Another inmate at the Pott. County Jail was presented with warrant for two counts of Probation Violation. 41-year old Jeremy Todd Casteel, of Carter Lake, was returned to his cell after the warrants were served.

And, a traffic stop Monday night on an SUV in Pott. County, resulted in the arrest of 55-year old Frank G. Schweigart, of Omaha. He was taken into custody for OWI/2nd offense.

Lee Named Intermat Freshman of the Year

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Spencer Lee was named 2018 InterMat Freshman of the Year, the amateur wrestling website announced Friday.

This award, presented each year since 2006 to best college freshman wrestler in all divisions for his/her college wrestling performance during the 2017-18 season, is based exclusively on the balloting of writers and executives at InterMat.

Lee was listed at the top of seven ballots out of 10 submitted by InterMat staffers, for a total of 84 votes. Hawkeye redshirt freshman Alex Marinelli was seventh in voting.

Lee won the 125-pound title at the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Cleveland on March 17. He rolled through the championship bracket, scoring 27 team points via two technical falls, two pins, and a 5-1 decision in the NCAA finals against previously undefeated Nick Suriano of Rutgers.

Lee joined the Iowa lineup Jan. 5 and finished his freshman season with a 22-2 overall record. He led the Hawkeyes with eight technical falls, ranked third with nine pins, and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Iowa’s Doocy Named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa softball’s Allison Doocy has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. It is the sophomore’s second weekly honor of the season. She was named Co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on March 12.

“Doocy continues to step on the field and give our team the best opportunity to win,” said UI head coach Marla Looper. “Even though the challenge was greater this weekend, she was able to get out of jams. She’s got more confidence this year than ever and when she’s rolling the team feels confident playing behind her.”

This is the second pitcher of the week award for Doocy and the third weekly conference honor of her career. She was named the freshman of the week on April 17, 2017.

Doocy went 2-0 in the circle on April 8 and 9 to aid Iowa in its series sweep of Wisconsin, recording a 1.50 ERA and allowing 10 hit and eight walks in 14 innings pitched. The sophomore led Iowa to a 3-0 shutout win over Wisconsin on Saturday and a 5-3 victory for the sweep on Sunday. Doocy allowed just one hit in her third shutout of the season during Saturday’s performance.

Doocy racked up 18 strikeouts over the weekend, bringing her season total to 147. She ranks second in the Big Ten with a 1.36 ERA and third with 147 strikeouts.

Doocy and the Hawkeyes take the field again on Tuesday in a double header at Nebraska. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. (CT) at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln. Both games will air live on BTN.

Audubon School Board Special Session to be held Wednesday

A Special Session for the Audubon Community School District Board of Education will be held 5:30-p.m. Wednesday, in the Board Room at the Audubon High School. During their session, a Budget Hearing will be held, featuring a Public Hearing on the proposed 2018-19 School Budget. Afterward, the Board will act on approving a Budget Guarantee Resolution, a Budget Plan for Certifications, and Personnel matters. An exempt session will follow the conclusion of regular business, for the purpose of discussing a negotiation strategy with the Collective Bargaining Unit.

Cass County Board of Supervisors to act on tax abatements &/or Tax Sale Certificates for Atlantic, Cumberland & Griswold

The Cass County Board of Supervisors will hold their regular weekly meeting Wednesday (April11th), in the Board Room at the Courthouse, in Atlantic. During their session, which begins as always, at 8:30-a.m., the Board will act on a request from the City of Atlantic, to abate all tax, penalties and interest on a total of 10 city-owned parcels. They’ll also act on a Resolution entering into an agreement to abate the tax and assign a tax certificate on a County-held Tax Sale Certificate for a parcel in Cumberland, and Griswold.

In other business, the Board may act on the appointment of a member to the Cass County Zoning Board of Adjustment, to fill a vacancy term, as well as the appointment of a Cass County Weed Commissioner for 2018. Their final order of business is to approve a permit for the display of fireworks requested by the Lewis Celebration Committee, for a display in an unincorporated area.

Iowa Baseball schedule changes drop Bradley game, add Coe match-up

Weather Alters Iowa’s Midweek Game vs. Bradley

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Due to the snow and cold temperatures that hit Central Illinois, the University of Iowa baseball’s non-conference game Tuesday evening versus Bradley in Peoria, Illinois, has been postponed.

Iowa (19-10, 5-3) will return to Big Ten competition with a three-game series against Nebraska from April 13-15 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Iowa Adds Wednesday Game Against Coe College

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Following the postponement of Tuesday’s game at Bradley and projected temperatures in the 70s, the University of Iowa baseball team has added a Wednesday game against Coe College at Duane Banks Field.  First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. (CT).

The Hawkeyes won two of three games last weekend against Ohio State, moving the team’s record to 19-10 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten play.  The Kohawks have won six of their last seven games to improve to 12-7 overall.  Coe plays Loras on Tuesday in Dubuque, Iowa.

Iowa also has moved up the game time for the April 17 matchup against Northern Illinois to 4:05 p.m. (CT).

Clarinda man arrested Monday on a meth charge

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers says his officers, Monday evening, arrested 25-year old James Robert Castillo, of Clarinda. Castillo was taken into custody at around 6-p.m., for possession of an illegal substance believed to be methamphetamine. Castillo was arrested during a traffic stop at the intersection of South 27th Street and State Highway 2. The substance believed to be methamphetamine was discovered during a search of the 2003 Kia Rio Castillo was operating. Castillo was also charged with operating a motor vehicle while his driving privilege is suspended. He posted bail through a bonding company and was released pending further court proceedings.

Reports concerning the incident have been submitted to the office of Page County Attorney Carl M. Sonksen for review regarding the filing of formal charges.

Former Davenport teacher gets 15 years in child porn case

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A former Davenport elementary teacher has been imprisoned for possessing and distributing child pornography. U.S. District Court records say Michael Ross was sentenced Monday to 15 years in federal prison. He’d pleaded guilty in December. Investigators say they found hundreds of images and videos on Ross’ computer, laptop and smartphone. The Davenport Community School District says Ross was hired in August 2013 and had worked at Buchanan and Wilson elementary schools. He’s surrendered his teaching license.
