KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs finally lost for the first time with Pat Mahomes at quarterback. But here’s the thing: There was no feeling of defeat in the locker room after the 43-40 loss in New England. The Chiefs came away with a sense of confidence and resolve with their ability to mount a comeback on the road.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost says his team had its best practice of the season Monday. That was after the excruciating 34-31 overtime loss at Northwestern. Frost remains concerned that his team will come to accept losing the longer it goes without a win. The Cornhuskers go into their home game against Minnesota this week winless in six games and on a program-worst 10-game losing streak.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State spent much of last season as college football’s plucky underdog. The Cyclones appear ready to burst back onto the national scene after a strange and sluggish start to 2018. They looked more dominant than endearing in throttling West Virginia. Iowa State dismantled the Mountaineers in a 30-14 victory that was much more one-sided than the final score indicated.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The fourth-largest lottery prize in U.S. history will be on the line as numbers are drawn for the Mega Millions game’s $654 million jackpot. The grand prize for Tuesday night’s drawing has grown so enormous because no one has won the jackpot since July 24. Although the jackpot is massive, the odds of matching all six numbers and becoming instantly wealthy are remarkably small at one in 302.5 million. Mega Millions is played in 44 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A judge has scheduled a January trial for a 22-year-old Iowa man charged with killing a top amateur golfer from Spain. District Judge Bethan Currie ruled Monday that Collin Richards will stand trial Jan. 15 for first-degree murder in the death of Iowa State University student Celia Barquin Arozamena. Richards entered a written not guilty plea and waived his right to a speedy trial.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Trump administration is doing its part to help Iowa congressman David Young hold onto his U.S. House seat. Last week President Donald Trump mocked Young’s 3rd district Democratic challenger Cindy Axne at a rally in Council Bluffs and praised the two-term Republican. On Monday, Young’s campaign announced Vice President Mike Pence will join Young for a rally Friday in Des Moines. Polls indicate a close race in the 3rd district, which includes the Des Moines metro area and southwest Iowa.

MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) — Supporters of a right-wing group are asking a judge not to grant a “deluxe legal defense” for a Mexican national charged with killing an Iowa college student. More than 200 people have sent postcards to Judge Joel Yates protesting his decision to authorize $5,000 for an investigator to work with Cristhian Bahena Rivera’s defense. The postcards are distributed by the Virginia-based Secure America Alliance.

Atlantic Parks and Rec Board approves Schildberg restroom

News

October 15th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department’s Board of Directors approved moving forward with plans for a single user, waterless pit, Americans With Disabilities Act (ACT) accessible restroom, on the west side of the Schildberg Recreation Area. Parks and Rec Director Seth Staashelm said he looked at two separate proposals, and recommended the board approve CXT “Gunnison” Model Concrete building that has the following features:

• Floorplan 6′ 6″ x 14′ 8″; • 1 toilet riser (ADA compliant); • ADA grab bars; • 1 waste clean out hatch and • 1 concrete waste vault (1,000 gallon capacity).

Gunnison-style restroom

The Gunnison design runs $18,170-dollars, which is under the $26,000 budget. Once it’s ordered, the restroom can be dropped-off anytime the site is prepared for delivery. The restroom will not be lit or have electrical and plumbing hookups, but Staashelm said there will lighting in the park itself to provide usable illumination.

Speaking of restrooms, Staashelm said restrooms at the other City Parks are closed for the season and winterized. The parks themselves are open for use, though. In other business, the Atlantic Parks and Rec Board approved a service agreement with Snyder Engineers and Associates for a $220-to $250,000 Bath House/Shelter project at the Schildberg Rec Area. It will include showers and restrooms for men and women, along with a possible concessions area and six picnic tables. Bids will likely be let over the Winter, with construction starting sometime early next Summer and completion by August or September.

And, Staashelm spoke to the Board about a Park Shelter Reservation Proposal. The proposal entails a reservation fee for three of the seven most popular shelters, including at Sunnyside Park: the Camblin Addition, Kiddie Korral and the East Shelter. Those three are also the largest shelters in the parks system. Staashelm recommends two time slots, one covering morning and lunch, the other covering dinner and night time slots, at $20 each. Full day use is $35. Reservations must be made 24-hours in advance. Payments can be made online, at a drop-box at the Parks and Rec Office, and possibly, at City Hall, although has not yet been officially approved.

You can make your reservations online at AtlanticIowa.com, and look for the Parks link.

Ex community college baseball coaches accused of misconduct

October 15th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Two former baseball coaches at an Iowa community college have been accused of misconduct by former players. Two ex-players at Indian Hills Community College claimed former head coach Cam Walker and assistant coach Steve Kletke provided false identities to foreign students so they could work to raise money for the team, The Daily Iowegian reported .

The foreign players weren’t allowed to work under the terms of their student visas. The players also said the coaches used physical punishment at practice for violations of team rules. Indian Hills officials declined to comment to the newspaper about the allegations, and both coaches declined to be interviewed.

College President Marlene Sprouse told The Associated Press Monday the school takes allegations of misconduct seriously and responds appropriately. The school said the coaches weren’t fired and didn’t resign, but added that they left because their contracts weren’t renewed. The team went 36-22 last season, and Walker had been head coach for 26 years.

Former players Colin Potrzeba of Omaha, Nebraska, and Endry Brito of Oranjestad, Aruba, said players were required to work as security and event staff for University of Iowa and Minnesota Vikings games for the past two seasons. The security companies paid the baseball program. The ex-players said the coaches provide foreign players with aliases, so they could work the security jobs.

Both Brito and Potrzeba quit the baseball team last spring, and Potrzeba said he shared his concerns with college officials. “I basically just told them everything that had gone on,” said Potrzeba. The players said they were punished physically at practice for certain conduct, such as moving away from a pitch instead of letting the ball hit them. One of the punishments involved a player in the pushup position dragging another player across the field for a distance. Potrzeba said he developed a hernia after one of those sessions.

On Monday, Young’s campaign announced Vice President Mike Pence will join the congressman for a rally Friday at a hotel near the Des Moines airport.

Polls indicate Young and Axne are in a close race in the 3rd district, which includes the Des Moines metro area as well as much of southwest Iowa. Axne is a businesswoman from West Des Moines. Before being elected to Congress, Young had worked as an aide to Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning and then Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley.
