The Atlantic basketball team picked up their second straight win over a Hawkeye Ten conference opponent on Friday night. The Trojans were tied at 29-29 midway through the second quarter and used a 9-2 run towards the end of the second quarter to take a 7-point led into the half. Atlantic clamped St. Albert down defensively and closed the game winning both quarters by at least 14.

It was a solid team effort for Atlantic with three players finishing in double figures. Nolan Waters sparked the Trojans in the first half with 4 three pointers. Colton Rasmussen had another solid night contributing 30 points to always give Atlantic an offensive outlet. Gavin McLaren then had 18 of his 20 points in the second half to help secure the win. While Rasmussen’s 30 kept the Trojans calm, Waters offensive performance on the night impressed Head Coach Dalton Franken.

The Trojans improved to 5-10 on the season. Next up is a trip to Red Oak on Tuesday and it’s a game Coach Franken is prepared for.

St. Albert was led by 26 points from Nick Ballenger. The Saintes drop to 4-11 and will next take on AHSTW Tuesday.

The Atlantic girls’ basketball team got within six points of St. Albert for a long stretch of second quarter but couldn’t get the key basket needed to get closer. The Saintes came away with a 58-38 win and improved to 14-1 on the season.

It was a close game midway through the first quarter, until Atlantic started to struggle mightily against zone defenses which allowed 10-0 run to end the fourth. St. Albert continued to hit triples throughout the second to lead 29-20 at the break. The third and fourth quarter followed suit with Atlantic never finding their groove and the Saintes kept hitting enough threes to keep the Trojans out of harm’s way.

Even with a 20-point loss, Head Coach Dan Vargason noticed the higher amount of energy and intensity from his team.

Lily Krohn led St. Albert with 16 points, Avah Underwood had 11, and Missy Evezik added 10. The Saintes will travel to AHSTW on Saturday.

Atlantic got 22 points from Paytn Harter and 4 from Zoey Kirchhoff. With how close the game was in the first half, Coach Vargason noted the competitive nature his team carries within themselves.

The Trojans fall to 6-12 on the season and will travel to face Red Oak on Tuesday.

The fifth ranked Iowa Hawkeye women return from a week off when they host Nebraska on Saturday. The Hawkeyes are coming off their first Big Ten loss 100-92 in overtime at Ohio State.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. The Huskers enter the game will a record of 5-3 in the conference race.

Junior guard Kylie Feuerbach says the Hawkeyes are anxious to return to action.

The 23rd ranked Iowa State Cyclones bid for a third straight win on Saturday by hosting seventh ranked Kansas. Senior guard Curtis Jones has given the Cyclones a lift in their last two games. The transfer from Buffalo has averaged 17 and-a-half points and shooting nearly 50 percent.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger who says Jones’ confidence is growing.

Iowa’s post season hopes are starting to fade as the Hawkeyes get ready to visit Michigan tomorrow. Iowa is 3-5 in the Big Ten and has already dropped three home games, the latest a 69-67 loss on Wednesday night to Maryland. Hawkeye coach Fran McCaffery is not calling this a must win.

Sophomore guard Dug McDaniel averages better than 17 points for a Michigan team that beat the Hawkeyes 90-80 in Iowa City back in early December.

Iowa has struggled defending the dribble and Daniel will be a challenge.
