LEESBURG, Fla. — The University of Iowa softball team split action on Friday afternoon at day one of The Spring Games. The Hawkeyes fell game one against Southern Illinois, 4-1, before defeating Liberty, 4-2, in the night cap.

Against Liberty, eight Hawkeyes recorded a hit with three Hawkeyes having a multi-hit game. Senior Grace Banes and freshmen Jena Young each went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Sophomore Jalen Adams picked up her second win of the season throwing a complete game against the Flames. She allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two Liberty hitters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1 

The Hawkeyes were able to get two runners on in the first, but both were left stranded as SIU got out of the inning.

The Salukis took advantage of three Hawkeyes errors in the top of the second to take an early, 3-0, lead. Starting pitcher Devyn Greer was able to get out of the inning without further damage after a strikeout.

The Hawkeyes were able to get their first run on the board in the home half of the fourth with an RBI double to the wall off the bat of freshman Devin Bowman. Senior Sammy Diaz followed suit with a single to right center and moved into scoring position on thew throw. Iowa was unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position as the fourth inning ended.

SIU loaded the bases in the top of the sixth as Iowa made a call to the bullpen. Junior Haley Downe entered in relief and got the final two outs and did not give up a run. The Salukis added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to extend their lead, 4-1. Iowa was retired in order to close out the game.

The Hawkeyes finished the game with one run on four hits with four errors.

Game 2

Banes started game two with a walk and came around to score on an RBI triple from freshman Soo-Jin Berry. Senior Brylee Klosterman brought home Berry with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Liberty answered back in the bottom of the first getting one run on an RBI single to cut their deficit to one.

Each teams scattered hits in innings two through four but neither team was able to cash in. Iowa added two more runs in the top of the fifth with RBI singles from freshman Jena Young and senior Sammy Diaz. The Flames added a run in the bottom of the fifth but Adams shut the door as she left two runners stranded.

Adams closed out the game facing seven batters in the final two innings. Iowa finished the game with four runs on eleven hits with two errors.

LAS VEGAS – After opening the UNLV Desert Classic with a one-run win over UC Santa Barbara, Iowa State (3-3) fell in the nightcap of the opening day to tournament-host UNLV (5-0) by a score of 1-7.

The Rebels scored an early five runs and were able to maintain a healthy lead throughout.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Schurman pitched four and a third innings, allowing just three hits and two runs and striking out four. Schurman made her longest appearance of the season and recorded her first career strikeout on the day.

At the plate, four different Cyclones recorded hits. Carli Spelhaug’s lone hit was a solo shot – Iowa State’s only run – which came in the top of the seventh inning. Angelina Allen, Ashley Minor and Camille Marin collected the other hits.

UNLV had three batters with multiple hits and used a pair of big flies to earn a six-run victory. The Rebels had pitcher Ellie Zellien go the distance, as she struck out seven in a full seven innings.

Iowa State has homered in five of the first six games of the season.

How it Happened

UNLV wasted little time, plating an early three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff double followed by a bunt single put runners on the corners with no out for the Rebels. After a groundout, UNLV drew a walk to load the bases. A single from Alyssa Trejo brought two in and then a Kelsie Kelso single brought in a third to make it 3-0.

After holding the Cyclones again scoreless in the top of the second, the Rebels tacked on a pair in the bottom of the frame. The second inning started like the first – a leadoff double from UNLV put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Ariana Martinez then came up to the plate with one out and belted a homer just over the right field wall. The homer made things 5-0 in advantage of UNLV.

Both teams would struggle to muster any momentum following the second, as the third, fourth and fifth inning all went scoreless. UNLV would snap the drought in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of another long ball. Following a walk, Alyssa Trejo smoked her third homer of the game, a two-run shot, to give the Rebels a 7-0 lead.

The (21-2) CAM Cougars girls basketball team with a nice 71-34 regional win over the Wayne Falcons Friday Night in Anita. The Cougars had took the lead of their first offensive posession and never looked. The Cougars press was not handled very well by the Wayne Falcons, as the fell behind early and trailed whole the whole game.

The Cougars were led in scoring with three of their seniors on the night, Eva Steffenson had 23 points and senior Kierra Nichols had 19 points, and Meredith Rich also chipped in with 14 points.
