UNI men’s hoops grabs win over Missouri State

The UNI men’s basketball team grabbed a 85-84 win over Missouri State on Saturday night in Springfield, MO. AJ Green was fouled on a three point attempt with 1:33 to go in the game and sank all three to break a 76-all tie. Green and Bowen Born combined to make four more free throws to secure the victory.

Green finished with 33 points and Noah Carter added 16 to lead the Panthers to their third straight win. The Panthers moved to 7-7 on the season and 3-1 in Mo Valley play.

The Panthers return to action on Jan. 11 to host the Indiana State Sycamores. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the McLeod Center.

Iowa State women roll past TCU

The No. 12 Iowa State women’s basketball team rolled to a 78-47 win over TCU on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones built a ten point lead by the end of the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 20 by half and rolled to the win.

Morgan Kane had a career day with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Ashley Joens dropped in 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her 40th career double-double.

The Cyclones improved to 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12. Iowa State now hits the road for a pair of games, beginning with a matchup at Kansas State on Wednesday, Jan. 11. The game will be at 6:30 p.m. on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

Zoom forum featuring prominent Black Iowans disrupted with racial slurs, threats

(Radio Iowa) – Police have been asked to investigate threats made during an online forum that featured prominent black Iowans, including the chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party. The Zoom forum was hosted by Progress Iowa. Members of the Iowa House Black Caucus as well as the chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party’s Black Caucus spoke. Iowa Democratic Party chairman Ross Wilburn, who is black, also participated.

Wilburn says the online event was disrupted by people making vile, racist comments to harass and intimidate. The executive director of Progress Iowa, which hosted the event, said disgusting and repulsive images were flashed on the screen as well

Staff Assault: Iowa State Penitentiary

FORT MADISON – Officials with the Iowa Department of Corrections, Saturday, said that on the evening of Friday, January 7, a correctional officer was assaulted by an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary.

The department can confirm that the inmate approached the officer at his post and a short time after the inmate began assaulting the officer. Nearby staff were alerted and responded to restrain the inmate. As a result of the incident, the facility has been placed on modified restricted movement until further notice.

The officer was transported by department vehicle to the local hospital and after further evaluation was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for examination and observation. The department continues to follow the recovery of the officer closely. The inmate was found to have not suffered any injuries.

The department is continuing to collect and confirm all details and the incident remains under investigation.

Rollin Dyer wrestling tournament fires up today

The Atlantic-CAM wrestling team is hosting their annual Rollin Dyer Tournament today at the Atlantic High School. The tournament will feature 16 teams.

A number of ranked teams will be in the mix. Underwood comes in ranked 3rd in Class 1A and feature of number highly ranked individuals. The Eagles have top ranked wrestlers at 132 with Gable Porter and at 145 with Hagen Heistand. Stevie Barnes is 2nd ranked at 138.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton is ranked 5th in 2A and Glenwood is 9th. Zander Ernst of SB-L is ranked 2nd at 152. Glenwood has ranked grapplers at 113 (Vinny Mayberry 5th), 120 (Matthew Beam 4th), and 195 (CJ Carter 1st). Greene County will also bring in a number of ranked individuals led by top ranked Kale Petersen at 113 and McKinley Roberts 2nd at 132.

Atlantic-CAM has a number of ranked wrestlers in 2A as well looking to continue to prove themselves. Aiden Smith is 4th at 106, Ethan Follmann 9th at 132, Kadin Stutzman 2nd at 170.

All the teams involved are: AHSTW, CB Abraham Lincoln, Alta-Aurelia, Audubon, Blair NE, Bondurant-Farrar, Denison-Schleswig, Glenwood, Greene County, Humboldt, I-35, New Hampton, Red Oak, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, and Underwood.

Action gets underway at 10:00 a.m. at the Atlantic High School gym.

 

UNI women drop MVC opener at Valpo

The UNI women’s hoops team dropped their Missouri Valley Conference opener at Valparaiso on Friday night 60-58.

The Panthers went cold in the fourth quarter, notching just 9 points in the period. Valparaiso put together a 15-2 run at the end of the game to grab the win. Karli Rucker had a chance to win it at the end with a three-point attempt that bounced off the rim.

Freshman center Grace Boffeli led UNI with a double-double of 13 points and 12 boards. UNI falls to 7-5 overall and start Valley play 0-1.

Loyola got 18 points from Olivia Brown and 13 from Shay Frederick. The Ramblers move to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in Valley play.

UNI continues their weekend road trip with an afternoon contest against the Loyola Ramblers. The game is set for a 1 p.m. Sunday tipoff from Gentile Arena and will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Drake women fall to Loyola

The Drake women’s basketball team was outscored 30-17 in the third quarter and fell to Loyola Chicago 63-46 on Friday night.

Maya Chandler led the way for Loyola with 16 points. The Ramblers improve to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the Valley.

Drake was led by 12 points from Megan Meyer in the loss. The Bulldogs are 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the Valley.

The Bulldogs remain on the road to take on Valparaiso on Sunday Jan. 9 in Indiana. Tipoff is set for 1pm CST.
