Drake beats UNI in overtime

Roman Penn hit two free throws with 2:39 left in overtime to break a 72-all tie and the Bulldogs finished with an 82-74 win in Cedar Falls on Saturday.

Penn finished with 18 points to lead Drake. Garrett Sturtz and Tucker Devries both had double-double efforts to help the Bulldogs improve to 14-6 on the season and 5-2 in the Valley.

AJ Green had a great scoring night for UNI with 27 points but the Panthers dropped their second game of the week. UNI drops to 9-9 overall and 5-3 in MVC play.

Iowa rips past Penn State

Keegan Murray had 15 points, 8 rebounds, and three blocks to lead Iowa to a 68-51 win over Penn State in Iowa City on Saturday. After a tight first half the Hawkeyes outscored the Nittany Lions by 12 in the second half.

Kris Murray added 13 points and 4 rebounds off the bench for the Hawkeyes. Patrick McCaffery and Jordan Bohannon each had 11 points. Iowa improved to 14-5 on the season and 4-2 in the Big Ten.

Penn State only had one player in double figures with Jalen Pickett scoring 14. The Nittany Lions fall to 8-8 on the season.

Next up for Iowa is a home game next Thursday against Purdue at 8:00 p.m. We’ll have coverage on KJAN starting at 7:00 p.m.

 

Miserable shooting day sends Iowa State to loss against TCU

The Iowa State men’s basketball team only managed to shoot 30% from the field and just 11% from three point range and dropped a 55-49 contest against TCU on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.

The Horned Frogs grabbed a double digit lead by halftime and the Cyclones couldn’t catch up. A 10-0 run by the Cyclones early in the second half got them within 3 but TCU responded with three quick buckets to grab control back for good.

Damion Baugh finished with 23 points to lead the TCU offense. The Horned Frogs improved to 13-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Big 12.

Izaiah Brockington was the only Cyclone that provided much offense and finished with 19 points on the day. The Cyclones drop to 14-5 on the season and 2-5 in Big 12 play.

Next up for the Cyclones is a trip to face Oklahoma State on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Creighton takes down DePaul

Creighton rallied from a 9 point halftime deficit to take down DePaul 60-47 on Saturday in Omaha. The Bluejays held the Blue Demons to just 15 points in the second half.

Ryan Kalkbrenner had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Trey Alexander dropped in 12 points, and Ryan Hawkins added 11 points and 7 boards to lead the Jays to the win. Creighton improves to 12-5 on the season.

Next up for Creighton is a road trip on Wednesday to face Butler at 6:30 p.m.

RONALD PETERSEN, 86, of Elk Horn, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Services for RONALD PETERSEN will be held at a later date. Ohde Funeral Home in Kimballton has the arrangements.

Atlantic man uninjured in Ringgold County tractor-trailer rollover accident

(Mt. Ayr, Iowa) – Officials with the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office report a man from Cass County escaped injury during a semi, tractor-trailer rollover accident Thursday morning. Authorities say 30-year-old Frank Saddlemire, of Atlantic, was driving a 2019 Kenworth semi southbound on Highway 169 at around 7:30-a.m., when the rig crossed the center line of the road.

Saddlemire over-corrected and spun, causing the semi to lose control and roll into the southbound ditch, facing north. There was disabling damage sustained to the truck and trailer owned by Atlantic Bottling Company in Atlantic, Iowa.

The Iowa Hawkeyes look to stay in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten race on Saturday by hosting Penn State. Both teams are 3-4 in the league race.
