AMES, Iowa – Izaiah Brockington was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and Tyrese Hunter was recognized as Big 12 Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches, as announced Sunday by the Big 12 Conference.

Brockington, a 6-4 senior guard from Philadelphia, was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and Big 12 All-Newcomer Team in addition to being named the league’s top newcomer.

Brockington, who finished the regular season third in the Big 12 in scoring (17.6) and rebounding (7.2) is the 10th Cyclone to be named conference newcomer of the year and the first since Deonte Burton in 2016.

A transfer from Penn State, Brockington recorded seven double-doubles and posted 13 straight double-figure scoring efforts in Big 12 play, including a 35-point outburst and game-winning shot against West Virginia.

Brockington shot a career-best 47 percent from the field and 39 percent behind the arc.

Hunter, a 6-0 freshman point guard from Racine, Wisconsin, is just the sixth Cyclone rookie to take home freshman of the year honors and the first since Curtis Stinson in 2004. He was also named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.

Hunter averaged 10.8 points and 5.0 assists, breaking the ISU freshman record with 155 assists while also posting 59 steals. On Saturday at Baylor, Hunter dished out 13 assists, the second most by any Cyclone freshman.

Hunter reached double digits in 18 games, scoring a career-best 22 points at West Virginia and topping 20 points twice against conference competition.

The Cyclone duo played a significant role in helping the team to the biggest turnaround in school and Big 12 history. ISU enters the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 20-11 record. The Cyclones will face Texas Tech Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

Tornado sirens failed to sound in Newton during deadly twisters

News

March 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Many Iowans heard tornado sirens wailing for more than an hour Saturday evening and night (Including here in Atlantic), but others who were in harm’s way heard nothing.
Residents of Newton may have initially been caught off guard by Saturday’s severe weather outbreak, because the city’s emergency sirens did not go off when the city was officially placed under a tornado warning. However, all other sirens in Jasper County did go off and did work properly, according to local emergency management officials. According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s office, there was an initial programming issue with the sirens in Newton, which has since been fixed.

According to the sheriff’s office, the north side of the community of Newton did receive some damage from Saturday’s severe weather. A portion of the roof was torn off TPI Composites Incorporated in Newton, according to a local spokesperson. The sheriff’s office says several trees were downed in Kellogg and several homes were damaged in the town of Newburg, as well. No serious injuries were reported within the county. Elsewhere in the state, at least four tornadoes claimed seven lives, six of them in Winterset.

House bill would triple “Safe Haven” time frame for surrendering an infant

News

March 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa House has unanimously voted to expand a law adopted two decades ago after a 17 year old who hid her pregnancy killed her baby. The current “Safe Haven Law” allows a parent to leave an infant at a health care facility 30 days after birth and the parent will not be charged with abandonment. The House bill would expand that time frame to 90 days. Representative Mary Mascher of Iowa City says the three month time frame is a good compromise to update a law passed in 2002. “During that time in Iowa, over 53 children have been surrendered to the State of Iowa by parents who felt that they could not care for those children,” Mascher says. “I look at each and every one of those children and the fact that we’ve had that law in place and it has made a difference in their lives, I’m hoping, for the better.”

Representative Anna Osmundson of Volga says the program has helped many women and children at critical times in their lives. “There should be more done to bring awareness to the program, so perhaps during the interim we could work on this a little further,” Osmundson said.

The tragic case of an infant who was strangled and found abandoned in a snowbank in the town of Chelsea, Iowa, was the catalyst for Iowa’s Safe Haven Act. Texas was the first state to adopt a “Safe Haven” law in 1999 and now every state has adopted the policy. In seven states, the infant must be 72 hours or younger. Iowa is among 23 states that currently have a 30 day time frame.

Iowans are warned about ‘spearphishing’ scams at work

News

March 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowans are being warned about a new type of scam called “spearphishing.” Jim Temmer, with the Better Business Bureau, says it’s different from a regular email or phone scam because it targets individuals at their place of work. “You will get a text, you don’t recognize the number, and they’re going to claim they’re your boss,” Temmer says. “For instance, here at the BBB, it’d say ‘Hi, this is Jim, I’m tied up right now, please text me back, I’ve got something for you to do.'”

Temmer says a spearphishing scam may come in the form of a strange email or text from your boss or your boss’ boss.  “I’m the scammer and I say, ‘Hey, you know what? Somebody just did something great. Go buy a $500 gift card for them, or send a check to this person,'” Temmer says. “Whatever it is I’m going to ask, it’s a scam.”

They might also ask for personal or business information from you, or ask that you fill out and approve an invoice. If you find yourself getting a strange message like this, contact your I-T department or your boss directly and make sure it’s legitimate.

Madison county residents talk about fatal tornado

News, Weather

March 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Madison County residents and volunteers will continue clean up today (Monday) from a deadly weekend tornado on the south edge of Winterset that killed six people. Volunteers with equipment and chain saws were helping clean up Sunday at the home of Teresa Hoag off Highway 169. She said her husband was going out to pull the car in the garage when the tornado hit Saturday evening. “And as he opened the door, I could see it, I could hear it over the hill,” She says. Hoag said she saw dark angry-looking clouds and it all happened very quickly. “Started hearing the crashing and booming and the wind – and then it was over,” Hoag says.

Her husband Don said he was trying to get the car out of the hail when he heard the tornado. “A train was coming down the road, it sounded like a train just coming. As soon as I got in the house, and around the corner, we had big tall pine trees in our yard and I just watch them take off. And then the door came in,” Hoag said. They lost seven outbuildings and the upper portion of their log home blew off. Don Hoag said it was much worse for their neighbors across the road. “As soon as I got my bearings and looked outside and everything was gone, I knew they were in trouble, and I ran, and Judy was crying, and she was by her husband,” Hoag said.

The home of Teresa & Don Hoah near Winterset

Their neighbor — 67-year-old Rodney Clark — was one of the people who died. Hoag said a large pile of rubble in front of his home is all that is left of the Clark’s house. There are bits of pink insulation hanging from the branches of the trees left standing around their home. The other victims of the Winterstet tornado were identified as 63-year-old Melissa Bazley, 72-year-old Cecilia Lloyd, 37-year-old Michael Bolger, five-year-old Kinley Bolger, and two-year-old Owen Bolger. The Hoag’s were overwhelmed by the people who turned out to clear trees and debris from around their home. A fundraising page has been established for the Bolger family.

“We’ve a lot of friends and family, and people we don’t even know out here helping,” Teresa Hoag said.

Governor Kim Reynolds toured the area and also commented on the people who showed up to help. “Two-hundred to 300 Iowans. Not only from Madison County and Winterset — but from communities and towns all across the state — that were on the ground the minute it was light and they could start helping,” the governor said. “It’s just unbelievable. I tried to walk through and thank them and over and over the response was “we’re Iowans and that’s what we do’.”

Madison County Emergency Management Coordinator, Diogenes Ayala had more details on the storm. “The National Weather Service determined that the tornado that tore through our community was estimated to be an E-F-3. With wind speeds between 136 miles and 155 miles per hour. There were approximately 52 damaged or destroyed homes in the path of the tornado that spanned over 13-point-seven miles,” according to Ayala.

The governor issued a disaster proclamation for Madison County. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources confirms one person died in the storm Saturday at Red Haw State Park in Chariton. The park had extensive damage and will be closed until further notice.
