Griswold woman & Red Oak man hurt in Sunday morning Montgomery County rollover accident

(Stanton, Iowa) — Charges are pending the results of an investigation into a single-vehicle rollover accident Sunday, in Montgomery County that resulted in two people being transported to the hospital.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a 2003 Ford Ranger driven by 22-year-old Kylie Dickinson, of Griswold, was traveling southbound on O Avenue at around 5:30-a.m., when for reasons unknown, the pickup went out of control and rolled over. The vehicle continued into a ditch and rolled twice more before coming to rest. The crash happened north of Stanton, about one-half mile north of 170th Street.

Emergency personnel found a passenger in the pickup, 22-year-old Nathan Fournier, of Red Oak, in the ditch between the roadway and vehicle. Dickinson was trapped in the vehicle and extricated by rescue personnel. Dickinson and Fournier were flown by air ambulance to trauma centers in Omaha, for treatment of their injuries.

The Iowa State Patrol, Red Oak Fire and Rescue, and Stanton Fire assisted the Sheriff’s Office at the scene.

LARY MILLS, 85, of Massena ,died November 7, 2021.  A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for LARY MILLS will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church near Cumberland (69488 Wichita Road).  Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic is assisting the family.

Military honors will be provided by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard and the Atlantic Color Guard.

Lunch will be served immediately following the service.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Victoria Township Cemetery, south of Massena.

Memorials may be made to St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, Massena Fire Department, or the Cumberland Fire Department.

JIM POORE, 59, of Atlantic died February 26th at his home. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service, with military honors, for JIM POORE will be held Saturday, March 19th at 4:00 p.m. at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Visitation with the family will be held beginning at 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. The service will be recorded and available to view on the funeral home website by the end of the day on Sunday, March 20th.

Iowa beats No. 9 Purdue to claim B1G Tournament title

Iowa won the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2006. The Hawkeyes turned back a late Purdue rally for 75-66 win, avenging two regular season losses to the Boilermakers. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says it was depth that allowed the Hawkeyes to win four games in four days.

Iowa had an eight point lead sliced to one with just over three minutes remaining but made the plays down the stretch to post its 26th win of the season.

The Hawkeyes are the fifth seed in the Midwest Regional and open the NCAA Tournament Thursday in Buffalo, New York against a Richmond team that upset Davidson to win the A-10 Tournament title.

Keegan Murray led the Hawkeyes with 19 points and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.

Sophomore forward Patrick McCaffery on winning the championship.

Sophomore guard and Indianapolis native Tony Perkins says defense was the key to holding off Purdue in the second half.

Atlantic’s Gratt Reed earns 2nd Team All-American Honors in 60M Hurdles at NCAA Indoor Championships

Atlantic alum Gratt Reed finished as a 2nd Team All-American in the 60M Hurdles at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend.

Reed ran a time of 7.78 in the prelims on Friday evening to ultimately finish in 12th place overall. The meet was being contested in Birmingham, AL.

Reed has continued to improve and make strides with the Hawkeye track and field program. They will now transition to the outdoor season starting with a meet at Arizona State next weekend.

UNI beats Missouri State to reach Hoops in the Heartland Championship Game

The UNI women’s basketball team took down Missouri State 63-57 on Saturday to reach the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship game. The Panthers rallied in the fourth quarter to get the win, outscoring the Lady Bears 22-12 in the final session.

The Panthers opened that final quarter with a 14-0 run to take command. Karli Rucker led four panthers in double-figures with 18 points. Grace Boffeli had a big game with 14 points and 9 rebounds.

Missouri State was led by 19 points from Abigayle Jackson and 12 from Mya Bhiner. The Lady Bears fall to 24-7.

UNI improved to 22-9 and will face Illinois State in the Hoops in the Heartland Championship Game on Sunday in Moline, IL.

Iowa State women drop overtime game to Texas in Big 12 Semis

The Iowa State Women’s basketball team forced overtime but ultimately came up short against Texas 82-73 in the Big 12 Tournament Semifinals on Saturday. The Longhorns outscored the Cyclones 25-18 in the third quarter and 19-10 in the overtime period. Rori Harmon opened the overtime with two threes for the Longhorns to help them pull away.

Harmon finished with 30 points and 4 assists. Lauren Ebo added 14 points, all in the second half to help the Texas effort. The Longhorns improved to 25-6 and will face Baylor in the Big 12 Championship game on Sunday.

Iowa State was led by 33 points and 13 rebounds from Ashley Joens. Lexi Donarski had 11 points and the Cyclones fall to 26-6.

Villanova edges past Creighton in Big East Championship

The Creighton Bluejays gave Villanova a tough test but the Wildcats edged out a 54-48 win in the Big East Championship Game at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. Collin Gillespie came up with two huge threes in the final two minutes to give Nova the win.

Creighton played strong defense to stay tight all game long but they couldn’t get shots to fall. The Jays went just 3 of 29 from 3-point range and shot just 33% from the field.

Ryan Kalkbrenner had 19 points and 8 rebounds to lead Creighton as they fall to 22-11. Ryan Hawkins was held to just 2 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.

Gillespie led Villanova with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Justin Moore added 16 for the Cats. Villanova improved to 26-7.

Atlantic City Council to pay recognition to Police Chief & appoint Hogue & Wood as Chief/Asst. Chief

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic City Council, Wednesday, will take action on making a change in command, with regard to the Police Department. The first order of business during their 5:30-p.m. meeting at City Hall, is to recognize current Police Chief Dave Erickson for his more than two-dozen years of service. Erickson is retiring at the end of the month. The Council is then expected to act on appointing Lt. Devin Hogue as his successor, effective April 1st, and the appointment of Lt. Paul Wood as Assistant Atlantic Police Chief, also effective April 1st.

Lt. Hogue has served the force in Atlantic since August, 2011. Lt. Wood has been with the department since Nov. 2004. He’s also served as member of the Atlantic Fire Dept. since 2007. Both men bring extensive experience and knowledge to their respective proposed positions.

In other business, the Council is expected to act on the appointment of Bev Moffatt to the Beautification Committee. They will then hold a Public Hearing on the Adoption of the Final, FY 2023 Budget for the City of Atlantic, followed by a Resolution adopting said Budget. The final Budget must be certified by the County Auditor and submitted to the State, by March 31st.

The Atlantic City Council will also hold a Public Hearing on Adoption of the FY 2023 10-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), followed by action on adopting a Resolution for the same. Another resolution the Council will act on, is with regard to Amending Seasonal Wages for the Atlantic Parks & Recreation Dept. for 2022. The City’s Personnel & Finance Committee has reviewed the proposed wages. The Council will act also, on a resolution “Setting salaries for appointed officers and employees of the City of Atlantic,” for the Fiscal Year July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.

Additional items of business include a Public Hearing on a proposal to enter into a General Obligation Solid Waste Management Loan Agreement, and a Hearing on the Bull Creek Improvement Project, to be followed by action on passing a resolution approving the previously mentioned Plans, Specifications and Form of Contract for the Bull Creek Improvement Projects, and, the awarding of a contract for those improvements (The City will open sealed bids 2-p.m. Tues., March 15th).

Bohannon’s late banker sends Iowa past Indiana

Jordan Bohannon banked in a deep three with one second left to send Iowa past Indiana 80-77 and into the Big Ten Tournament Championship. Iowa was down much of the game but rallied late to take a lead in the fourth. Indiana got a steal and a layup to tie it at 77 with under thirty seconds left before Bohannon’s shot.

Keegan Murray had 32 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Jordan Bohannon finished with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. The Hawkeyes improved to 25-9.

Indiana was led by 31 points and 10 rebounds from Trayce Jackson-Davis. Their record falls to 20-13.

Iowa will take on Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament Championship today. Purdue advanced with a 75-70 win over Michigan State in the other semifinal. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 1:30 p.m. and tipoff at 2:30 p.m.
