(Ouray Colorado) – A man with a long singing career who was born in Audubon, Iowa and later included some towns from around the area into his songs, died Friday in Colorado, at the age of 93.  William Dale Fries, Jr., created the stage name of “C.W. McCall,” and came up with beloved trucker songs like “Convoy” and “Wolf Creek Pass.” His death was confirmed by his son Bill Fries III.

According to various reports, he created the character of “C.W. McCall” for an advertising campaign for Old Home Bread while he was working at an advertising agency. His biggest hit was of course “Convoy,” the 1975 truckers’ anthem about a driver with the call sign “Rubber Duck” who organized a convoy over his CB radio as the truckers were crossing the country. The song reached the top of both the pop and country charts, and was such a hit that it was later made into a movie starring Kris Kristofferson.

In an interview he conducted on February 9, 2022, McCall stated that he had cancer and had entered hospice care in Colorado due to his refusal to admit himself to a hospital. He and his wife had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s basketball sophomore Caitlin Clark was named the Nancy Lieberman and the Dawn Staley Point Guard of the Year, the Hoops Hall of Fame and the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia announced, respectively, Friday.

The Nancy Lieberman Award, in its 23rd year, recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. The award is given annually to a player who exhibits the floor leadership, playmaking and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman.

In its 10th year, the Dawn Staley Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate guard in the country; a player who exemplifies the skills that Dawn possessed during her career — ball handling, scoring, ability to distribute the basketball and will to win. Clark is the first student-athlete to win the a in back-to-back seasons.

The West Des Moines, Iowa, native led the nation in points per game (27.0), assists per game (8.0), total assists (257), total points (863), free throws made (200), triple doubles (5) and 30-point games (11). Clark is the only women’s basketball player to lead the country in both assists per game and points per game in a single season.

Clark registered five triple-doubles this season, leading the country in most career triple-doubles by an active player with six. Clark’s six career triple-doubles ties former Hawkeye Sam Logic’s Big Ten record (2011-15) for most in a career and ties for the fifth most single season (5) and career (6) triple-doubles in NCAA Division I history.

MINNEAPOLIS – Iowa State women’s basketball’s Ashley Joens was named the Cheryl Miller Award winner for the second-consecutive season, the WBCA announced Friday on ESPN. Joens is also the first back-to-back winner of the award, which honors the nation’s top small forward.

Joens led the Cyclones with 20.3 points and 9.5 rebounds, while dishing 1.8 assists. The Iowa City, Iowa native, elevated her game from beyond-the-arc, connecting on a career-best 91 triples, while shooting 37.6 percent from beyond the arc. She also totaled 18 double-doubles on the year.

She helped the Cyclones to a program record 28 wins, along with a record-setting 14 conference wins. Iowa State finished league action second in the conference, spent much of the 2021-22 season in the AP Top 10.

She recently solidified herself as the most prolific scorer in Iowa State basketball history, scoring 2,369 career points. She also joins Angie Welle as the only other Cyclone to score 2,000 points and haul in 1,000 rebounds.

Joens has received many accolades to commemorate the season, including being named a Second-Team All-American by the Associated Press and USBWA. On Thursday, she also became the second Cyclone in school history to earn a spot on the prestigious WBCA Coaches’ All-America Team, joining Cyclone great Bridget Carleton in 2019.

The Cheryl Miller Award has been presented to the top small forward in women’s college basketball the past five seasons. Iowa State has claimed the honor three times, with Carleton winning in 2019. UConn’s Gabby Williams (2017-18) and Oregon’s Satou Sabally (2019-20) are the other two winners of the award.
