(Atlantic, Iowa) – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Healthy Cass County is celebrating by promoting mental health events scheduled for May 2022. All events below are free and open to the public. Following the list of events is information on the partner organizations that make these events possible, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness Southwest Iowa (NAMI Southwest Iowa), Southwest Iowa Mental Health and Disability Services Region, Senior Life Solutions, and Angels Care Home Health.

All month: NAMI’s “Meet Little Monster” a mental health activity and coloring book will be available as take-home packets for youth at all Cass County libraries. Provided by NAMI Southwest Iowa.

The Trojan Relays will know henceforth be known as the Bruce Henderson Invitational. A large crowd gathered in the Atlantic High School Auditorium to celebrate the renaming of the Trojan Relays in honor of legendary Atlantic track and field and cross country coach Bruce Henderson. Unfortunately the meet itself had to be cancelled due to the rainy and cold weather conditions on Monday.
A number of former athletes and committee members spoke about what Bruce has meant to them, the Atlantic community, and the running community in general. Former athlete Jackie Sampson talked about how they got the process rolling.
Plaques were given out to Bruce along with two of his longtime assistant coaches Don Jenkins and Barb Olsen. Medals for the meet were made with Bruce’s likeness on them and that’s how they will be going forward. T-shirts were also made up for former athletes to wear to honor the occasion and a recording from track announcer Mike Jay was played for the crowd talking about Coach Henderson’s accomplishments. Coach Henderson showed his joy when speaking to the crowd.
Coach Henderson thanked many people that helped him along the way and at the end of his speech brought up his wife Gail to honor her help and share the spotlight with him. You can watch the full ceremony from our KJANTV broadcast below.
Police in Creston report a man from Ottumwa was arrested Monday night in the 400 block of N. Oak Street. Authorities say 24-year-old Tyler Jay McElroy was charged with Burglary in the 2nd Degree. His cash or surety bond was set at $10,000. And, at around 1:36-a.m. today (Tuesday), 18-year-old Tina Sue Joann Richards, of Creston, was arrest for Trespass/1st offense. She was cited and released
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released the sites and assignments for regional tennis tournaments. The tournaments will take place on Wednesday, May 11th starting at 9:00 a.m.

Denison-Schleswig finished 4th at the Spencer Tournament on Monday. Tessa Petersen took third for the Monarchs with a round of 100. The rest of the scores for the Monarchs were: Lillian Schultz 125, Maggie Hennings 126, Gracie Outhouse 133, Bobbi Jipsen 140.

The Hawkeye Ten Boys Tennis Tournament started on Monday in Red Oak with Doubles play indoors.
The Denison doubles team of Carson Seuntjens and Wyatt Johnson won the #1 Doubles bracket. The 3rd-seeded pair beat the top-seeded duo of Josh and Eli Schuster of Shenandoah in the championship match. The Atlantic duo of Ethan Sturm and Clevi Johnson lost in the semifinals to Seuntjens/Johnson 8-1. They ended up taking 3rd place with an 8-5 win over Harger/Kirsch from Glenwood.
In #2 Doubles Paul Schlater and Dylan Gray of Shenandoah took the bracket win with a victory over Gavin Hipnar and Braden Curnyn of Denison-Schleswig in the final. Atlantic’s pair of Easton O’Brien and Bryan York fell in their opening match to a pair from Kuemper Catholic 8-3. They worked their way back to the 5th place match with two subsequent wins. They fell in the 5th place match 8-3 to Kraus/Reincke of Kuemper again to finish in 6th.

Paul Goldschmidt launched a solo homerun off of Zack Greinke in the bottom of the first inning and that was all the scoring that would be had in the Cardinals 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday afternoon in St. Louis.
Steven Matz blanked the Royals over six innings of work, allowing 4 hits and registering 4 strikeouts. Goldschmidt finished with 2 hits on the day.
The Cardinals improved to 13-9 on the season. The Royals and Cardinals will move across the state to Kansas City to continue the series Tuesday night. We’ll have coverage on KJAN starting at 6:15 p.m.
