New state mentoring program to ensure deaf and hard of hearing kids are prepared for school

(Radio Iowa) – A new state law outlines the visual language skills deaf and hard of hearing children need to learn — things like fingerspelling and American Sign Language — so they’re prepared for kindergarten. The law also establishes a mentoring program for parents of newborns and toddlers who are diagnosed with hearing difficulties. Tina Caloud, outreach director for the Iowa School for the Deaf, attended the bill signing ceremony in the governor’s office and spoke with Radio Iowa through an interpreter.

“We have been trying to propose this bill for several years now and it finally has been passed into law and we are absolutely thrilled. We are ready to work hard, work collaboratively for education our deaf and hard of hearing children across the state, to ensure they have language access,” she said. “This means both American Sign Language and English.” Studies show the majority of deaf children who enter kindergarten without knowing American Sign Language never catch up academically. Shirley Hampton of Davenport, president of the Iowa Association for the Deaf, spoke through an interpreter during a Radio Iowa interview.

“Don’t leave deaf children out. Don’t leave them behind,” she says. “Involve them in any type of communication that is occurring and that will allow them to thrive.” At least 2000 deaf and hard of hearing students are enrolled in Iowa’s K-through-12 schools. The Iowa Association for the Deaf is pushing legislators to offer closed captioning on the livestream of debate in the House and Senate. And the group says a state law may be needed to ensure emergency warning systems alert everyone.

“Any public places, such as the airport, anything like that, restaurants — we really need to make sure that it’s accessible for deaf individuals and the community, especially in those emergency situations such as a tornado,” Hampton said. “It’s vital not only for deaf people, but blind people as well to make sure they have access to that communication.” Hampton says she was recently eating in a central Iowa restaurant and saw other customers clustered around a television, then leave the dining room. She had no idea they had heard about a tornado warning through the television and were seeking shelter in the kitchen.

Two University of Iowa baseball student-athletes – redshirt senior Izaya Fullard and redshirt sophomore Kyle Huckstorf – were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team, it was announced Sunday by the league office.

Fullard hit .316 (6-of-19) in five games with one double, two RBIs and two runs scored.  The North Liberty, Iowa, native had the game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning in Iowa’s 5-4 victory over Purdue in Friday’s elimination game.  The second baseman had two multi-hit games in the tournament.

Huckstorf finished with a team-high .400 (6-of-15) batting average with three extra-base hits (double, triple and home run).  The outfielder drove in a team-high six runs and four score times.  The Wisconsin native was 2-for-3 with a double and solo home run against Penn State before going 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs in the semifinal win over Michigan.

After losing its tournament opener, Iowa won three straight elimination games at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.  The Hawkeyes became the first team in tournament history to win two games on the same day when they defeated Penn State and Michigan on May 28.

OMAHA, Neb. – Michigan jumped out to a 4-0 lead and put up a nine spot late to down the University of Iowa baseball team, 13-1 in seven innings, on Sunday in an elimination game at the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

Iowa had a strong week in Omaha, winning three games and becoming the first team to win two games on the same day during the tournament.  The Hawkeyes are 36-19 overall.

Michigan took advantage of two free bases against Iowa starter Brody Brecht in the first inning, which led to two runs scoring.  After Brecht gave up an RBI single to Jimmy Obertrop, Iowa went to Dylan Nedved in relief.  The redshirt senior struck out two of the three batters he faced, but Michigan’s Riley Bertram’s RBI single through the right side made the score 2-0.

Michigan used a single, hit by pitch and Hawkeye fielding error to load the bases in the fourth before back-to-back sacrifice flies pushed the lead to 4-0.

Iowa scored its lone run in the bottom half when Izaya Fullard walked and scored on Kyle Huckstorf’s RBI single.

Michigan put an end to the game in the seventh, scoring nine runs on three hits, while sending 13 batters to the plate.  Tito Flores had a two-run double, Ted Burton had a three-run double and Clark Elliott and a three-run triple in the inning.

Brecht (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in 1/3 of an inning.  Iowa used seven pitchers in the game and the staff issued nine free bases.
