(Updated 8:53-a.m.) Severe thunderstorms that formed overnight in Nebraska, crossed into western Iowa early this (Monday) morning, bringing straight-line winds as high as 79 mph at some locations. Those winds caused large tree limbs to fall across Highway 59 near Denison, in Crawford County, and power lines to snap. A storm damage/incident report from the National Weather Service shows a 70-mile-per-hour just of wind caused a 12-inch diameter tree branch to crash through a window in Soldier, in Monona County. Winds averaging 65-70 mph were reported in Carroll and Crawford County, and a 79 mph gust was recorded southwest of Glidden.

As the storms continued eastward, they brought in excess of 65 mph winds to Jefferson, which caused numerous tree limbs to break and power outages. Significant damage was reported at the Spring Lake camping area near Jefferson. And, a large metal canopy over gas pumps at an abandoned gas station in Jefferson partially collapsed during the storm, and a grain bin partially collapsed near 130th Street and O Avenue, west of Paton, in Greene Couty.  Large tree limbs were also reported down west of Ames, as winds gusted up to 58 mph. Iowa AD Gary Barta talks future football scheduling in B1G

Sports

July 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa AD Gary Barta expects divisional play in football to end with the addition of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten. The league has been divided into East and West divisions since 2014. The Trojans and Bruins begin competing in the Big Ten in 2024 and the league appeared headed away from divisional play before their addition.

Barta expects work on a schedule that includes USC and UCLA will begin soon.

Barta hopes Iowa’s border rivalries can be preserved when a new scheduling formula is adopted. The Hawkeyes currently have trophy games against Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

Barta says the latest round of expansion makes it less likely all of the border rivalries can be played every year.

Iowa State’s Gabe Kalscheur talks about next season

Sports

July 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State guard Gabe Kalscheur says unfinished business is why he decided to return for his final season. The former Minnesota transfer averaged more than nine and a half points for an ISU team that made it to the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Kalscheur feels the same motivation this summer that the team had a year ago coming off a 2-22 record.

Kalscheur says the goal remain high despite having three incoming freshmen and four transfers.

State Fair aims to break even on Grandstand shows

Ag/Outdoor, News

July 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa State Fair’s C-E-O and a key official in the Iowa COUNTY fair circuit say concerts are a growing emphasis to spur fair attendance. Tom Barnes, executive secretary of the Mighty Howard County Fair, is also executive director of the Association of Iowa Fairs.  “There’s a lot of other things at the fair that we want to brag about and push, but we’ve got to get the people there first,” Barnes says, “and that’s what the concerts will do.”

Rodeos and race track events were the bread and butter of county fairs not too many years ago, according to Barnes, but a handful of county fairs started emphasizing concert entertainment about eight years ago and the trend spread. “Fairs were seeing what their neighbors were doing and now we’re seeing a lot of even small county fairs throwing a small-dollar concert,” Barnes says. “It gives the community something else to come to the fair for.” Gary Slater, the General Manager and C-E-O of the Iowa State Fair, says about 10 percent of people who attend the Iowa State Fair go to a show at the Grandstand — but the performances matter to those who do NOT attend a concert.

“That’s the pulse of the Fair,” Slater says. “Whether you attend the Grandstand or not, you like to know what’s going on and you like the Fair to pull those popular entertainers.” The Fair spent a million dollars renovating the Grandstand stage in 2018, to meet artists’ expectations for video screens, lighting and sound systems. “We had to get into that business or else they wouldn’t come to an outdoor state fair venue,” Slater says. “…It’s an expensive thing.”

Every concert-goer has to buy a ticket to enter the fairgrounds and Slater says when expenses and profits are calculated from the Grandstand, they aim to break even. The 2022 Iowa State Fair runs from August 11th through the 21st this year.

Here’s a list of area County Fairs:

  • The Adams County Fair concludes its full, 5-day run, on Tuesday
  • Audubon, July 13-17
  • Shelby County Fair, July 13-18
  • Montgomery County Fair, July 19-24
  • Adair, July 20-24
  • Pottawattamie County Fair, July 20-24
  • Cass, July 27-Aug. 2
