Temporary overnight lane closures of west- and eastbound I-80 in West Des Moines scheduled for Monday, Oct. 3

CRESTON, Iowa – Sept. 29, 2022 – A project to set beams for the new Ashworth Road bridge over Interstate 80 in West Des Moines requires a complete closure of westbound I-80 and closure of the left lane of eastbound I-80 between Jordan Creek Parkway (exit 121) and Grand Prairie Parkway (exit 118) from 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Creston construction office.

During these closures, traffic will follow a marked detour route using Grand Prairie Parkway, University Avenue, and Jordan Creek Parkway.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.

Two arrests and one accident reported in Mills County

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports two recent arrests and one accident.

On Tuesday, September 27th Deputies arrested 47-year-old Brent William Michael of Malvern for Driving While Barred. Michael was arrested on Main Street in Malvern at 10:48 p.m. Michael was booked into the Mills County Jail on $2,000 bond.

Early on the morning of Thursday, September 29th Richard James Linfor of Shenandoah was arrested for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The arrest occurred on Locust Street in Glenwood at 1:05 a.m. Linfor was booked into the Mills County Jail on $300 bond.

An accident was reported on Wednesday, September 28th at 11:30 a.m. A FedEx Van driven by 28-year-old Quan Dukes of Omaha, NE reported that he was approaching the stop sign at Pruden Avenue and Highway 275 and couldn’t see through gravel dust. He was unable to stop at the intersection before striking the trailer of a 2004 FRHT that was being operated by 60-year-old Curtis Cashatt of Glenwood. No injuries were reported but damage was caused to both the van and trailer.

  • 1 lb. boneless beef chuck roast, cut into 1″ pieces
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 2 (14.5 oz.) cans diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 3 medium carrots, sliced
  • 2 small potatoes, peeled, if desired, and cut into 1/2″ cubes
  • 1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
  • 1/2 cup frozen loose-pack peas, thawed

In a large skillet, brown beef on all sides in hot oil over medium-high heat.  Place meat in a 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 quart slow cooker.  Add undrained tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, onion, water, salt and thyme.

Cover; cook on low heat setting for 8 to 10 hours or on high heat setting for 4 to 5 hours.  Stir in peas.  Ladle into bowls to serve.

YIELD:  4 to 5 servings

Creston Police report three arrests on Wednesday

The Creston Police Department reports three arrests on Wednesday, September 28th.

At 6:33 p.m. Officers arrested 36-year-old Kyle Wesley Kreb of Creston in the 500 block of South Maple Street. Kreb was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Marijuana 2nd Offense, Possession of a Controlled Substance Methamphetamine 1st Offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Intent to Manufacture/Deliver Methamphetamine. Kreb was taken to the Union County Jail and held on no bond until seen by a Magistrate.

At 6:09 p.m. 38-year-old Amanda Olivia Jones of Creston at 302 North Pine Street. Jones was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance Methamphetamine 2nd Offense. Jones was taken to Union County Jail and held until posting $2,000 bond.

At 8:26 p.m. 58-year-old James Chandler Sash of Creston was arrested at 706 West Adams Street. Sash was charged with Indecent Exposure and taken to the Union County Jail. Bond was set at $1,000 cash or surety.

Iowa’s Kaevon Merriweather previews No. 4 Michigan

Iowa safety Kaevon Merriweather says the defense must limit big plays to have any chance against fourth ranked Michigan. The Wolverines struck with two big plays early and clobbered the Hawkeyes 42-3 in last year’s Big Ten Championship.

Merriweather says the Hawkeyes must make the Wolverines go on extended drives.

As a native of Belleville, Michigan, Merriweather says this game has a lot of meaning for him.

Kickoff on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium is 11:00 a.m. We’ll have coverage on KJAN starting with pregame at 9:00 a.m.

Iowa State looks to bounce back at Kansas

Iowa State has been very good at bouncing back from a loss under Matt Campbell and that will be the goal this week against Kansas. The Cyclones are coming off a 31-24 loss in their Big 12 opener against Baylor.

That’s senior receiver Xavier Hutchinson who says this is a much improved Kansas team from the one the Cyclones beat 59-7 last season.

Hutchinson on the style of defense they will see from the Jayhawks.

Kickoff in Lawrence, KS on Saturday is 2:30 p.m.

Kansas coach Lance Leipold previews Iowa State

Kansas coach Lance Leipold says his team is not concerned with the national rankings. Despite a 4-0 start to the season the Jayhawks are not ranked heading into this week’s game against Iowa State.

Leipold says the ISU program is one they have tried to model themselves after.

Leipold says Hunter Dekkers’ time in the Iowa State program has helped him adjust to the starting role.

Leipold says Dekkers’ has played well.

WENDEL HOLLIDAY, 89, of Greenfield passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at his home.  Funeral services for WENDEL HOLLIDAY will be held on Tuesday, October 4th at 10:30 a.m. at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield.

Open visitation will be held on Monday, October 3rd from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield, with family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening.

Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery with full military graveside rites by the Greenfield American Legion Head Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357. A luncheon will follow the burial at the Greenfield Gospel Chapel.

Memorials may be directed to the Wendel Holliday Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.

Wife: Janet Holliday of Greenfield.
