Baird family Christmas light display begins tonight (Dec. 10, 2022)

(Rural Red Oak, Iowa) – The Baird Family reminds area residents that “Tonight is the night!” The lights on the poplar Christmas displays on their farm (1233 E. Avenue) will be turned on tonight (Dec. 10th) beginning at dusk (approximately 5-p.m.), and will be on every night including weekends through New Years night. They will be on until 10-p.m. every night, and will be one on timers, so they cannot be changed.
The family has made changes to their displays every year for nearly 50-years. They offer for viewing various lighted structures and animated characters enclosed in a 10-acre section of the farm. Learn more on the Baird family Christmas light’s Facebook page

Directions from Red Oak:
North from Red Oak on Highway 48 until you get to 110th Street. Turn west and go until you get to E Avenue. Turn South on E Avenue. Then you should see them.

(Clarinda, Iowa) – The Page County Sheriff’s Office, Saturday (Dec. 10) issued a report on arrests conducted from November 26, 2022 through December 9, 2022. Those arrested are as follows:

  • 11/24/2022 David Duane James (37) arrested Highway #71 and 230th Street. Arrested on an active felony warrant out of Nodaway County Missouri for failure to appear on an order of support. There is no bond on this warrant.
  • 11/30/2022 Ricky Dean Peterson (45) arrested at the Page County Sheriff’s Office. Arrested on an active Page County Warrant for Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Flow of air or blood. There is no bond on this warrant.
  • 12/02/2022 Terry Lee Williams (51) arrested at 501 North 15th Street in Clarinda Iowa. Arrested on an active warrant for Parole Violations. There is no bond on this warrant.
  • 12/05/2022 Monique Jasmine Miller (21) arrested at Highway #71 and 290th Street. Arrested for possession of a controlled substance. Bond is $1,000.00 cash or surety.
  • 12/05/2022 Samuel Wade Walker (48) arrested at the Page County Courthouse. He was arrested on an active warrant for violation of a no contact order. Bond is $300.00 cash or surety.
  • 12/05/2022 Dylan Joseph Hanson (26) arrested at the Montgomery County Jail. Arrested on an active Page County warrant for Theft in the 1st Degree. Bon is $10,000.00 cash or surety.
  • 12/08/2022 Michael Leo Pickens (48) arrested at the Page County Sheriff’s Office. Arrested on an active Federal Warrant for narcotics. There is no bond on this warrant.

12/02/2022 – Todd William Bashaw was traveling east on 190th Street in his John Deere combine. Ryan James Leporte was traveling west on 190th street. Bashaw and Leporte collided causing damage to Leporte’s vehicle.

UNI loses close one to McNeese State

UNI dropped a 52-49 contest to McNeese State on Friday night in Cedar Falls. The Panthers shot a measly 29% from the field and fall to 3-6 on the season.

Trey Campbell posted 17 points for the Panthers, he hit five threes in the game. Michael Duax had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Next up for the Panthers is a home game against South Florida on Monday at 7:00 p.m.

Glenwood sits 10th after day one of Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic

The massive Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic at the Mid-America Center began on Friday and will finish on Saturday. The boys field includes 41 teams and the girls field has 32.

On the boys side Glenwood sits in a tie for 10th in the team standings with 90.5 points. Matt Beam (132), Tate Mayberry (152), CJ Carter (195), and Mason Koehler (220) all advanced to the second round of their brackets for the Rams.

Atlantic’s Aidan Smith (113) and Brenden Casey (195) advanced to the second round of their brackets for the Trojans.

On the girls side Lewis Central had 7 wrestlers assure themselves a top-8 finish after day one and they sit second in the team standings with 201.5 points.

SWAT and Riverside grab three titles at Riverside Girls Wrestling Tournament

Wrestlers from 23 schools competed at the Riverside Girls Wrestling Tournament on Friday in Oakland. SWAT and Riverside each had three champions on the night.

SWAT had six wrestlers make the finals and three came out on top.  Maddie McCoy (115B), Grace Britten (170), and Ellen Gerlock (190) all won titles for the Valkyrie, with all three pinning every opponent they faced. Grabbing silver medals were Quincy Sorensen(115A), Evy Marlin(135), and Mia South(145A). Paige Baier finished 3rd at 155B.

Riverside had five finalists and three champs. Molly Allen (126), Macy Woods (130B), and Paola Gonzalez (155A) all picked up titles. Jayden Carrigan (120) and Ana Wilson (135B) were 2nd place finishers for the Bulldogs.

AHSTW’s Isabella Canada took the title at 235 and Audubon’s Laura McCarville won the championship at 125A.

ALTHEA “JOANNE” CHRISTENSEN, 88, of Anita died on Friday, December 9th at her home. A Celebration of Life for JOANNE CHRISTENSEN will be held at the Anita Methodist Church on Saturday January 7th, 2023, starting at 11:00-a.m., in the church basement. A luncheon will be served. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

ALTHEA “JOANNE” CHRISTENSEN is survived by:

Her husband – Tom.

Her daughters – Cheri (Jim) Miller; Charl (David) Claussen; Camma Stott, and Shelly Obermeire.

Her son – Mark Miller.

Her sister – Betty Belle Ford

11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, her in-laws, and other relatives.
