Mather Lifts Cubs over Cardinals

CHICAGO (AP) — Joe Mather’s two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 comeback win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. St. Louis closer Jason Motte (1-1) had the Cubs down to their final strike when Mather, a former Cardinal, grounded a 2-2 slider up the middle, scoring Bryan LaHair and Geovany Soto. LaHair battled Motte for 12 pitches before drawing a one-out walk. Motte then walked Soto, before Steve Clevenger’s grounder moved the runners up to set the plate for Mather. Rafael Dolis (1-1) picked up the win in relief. Jaime Garcia outdueled Matt Garza, who held St. Louis to two runs and four hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking three.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama will speak at a charity lunch in Omaha on Tuesday. Obama is the featured speaker at Tuesday’s fundraiser for Girls Inc. After the lunch, Obama will speak at campaign events in Omaha and Des Moines, Iowa. Girls Inc. provides educational and recreational programs for girls.

RUDD, Iowa (AP) — The Floyd County attorney says a 17-year-old Mason City boy was shot to death at a house near Rudd in north-central Iowa. County Attorney Normand Klemesrud has identified the teen as Hunter True. He died Sunday. No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Nearly every coach in the Big 12 will swear that spring practice shows just how far away their team is from playing a real game. For new Kansas coach Charlie Weis, it’s far from hyperbole. The Jayhawks have issues on both sides of the ball.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police have identified a suspect in an Iowa City bank robbery who fled the scene on a motorcycle and led authorities on a chase. No injuries were reported in yesterday’s robbery at a Hills Bank branch. Police say 34-year-old Eric Martin of Davenport faces several charges, including first-degree robbery.

No Major Damage in Cardinals OF Jay’s Shoulder

CHICAGO (AP) — An MRI exam on St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay’s right shoulder has revealed no structural damage and there are no plans to put him on the disabled list. Jay was injured when he crashed into the center-field wall at Busch Stadium on Thursday, trying to track down Drew Stubbs’ seventh-inning home run in a 6-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The team sent him back to St. Louis to get checked out after he experienced discomfort during batting practice on Sunday. Jay is hitting .349 with two homers and four RBI on the year.

Carson man sentenced to 14-months in prison

The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa said Monday that 38-year old Jerry Lee Dawson, of Carson, was sentenced Friday to 14-months in prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.  United States District Court Senior Judge Ronald Longstaff, also ordered Dawson to serve a three-year term of supervised release following his incarceration.

On February 22nd, Dawson entered a guilty plea to possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony offense. The federal charge
arose from a traffic stop conducted by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department on June 29, 2011. During the traffic stop, a 12 gauge shotgun and ammunition were recovered from the vehicle Dawson was driving.

The investigation was conducted by the Pott. County Sheriff’s Office, Pott. County Attorney’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Branstad announces disaster help after storms

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad says individual disaster assistance programs are available for some residents dealing with storm damage in Fremont and Union counties. Tornadoes hit on April 14 in Thurman and Creston. The programs provide grants of up to $5,000 for households with an income at or below twice the federal poverty level, or a maximum of $37,000 annual income for a family of three. Grants are available for home or car repairs, clothing and temporary housing. Original receipts are required for those seeking reimbursement for expenses.

Big 12 Coaches Using Spring to Fix Issues

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Nearly every coach in the Big 12 and beyond will swear that spring practice shows just how far away their team is from playing a real game. For some, like new Kansas coach Charlie Weis, it’s far from hyperbole. Weis took over in the offseason after the Jayhawks fell to 2-10 under departed coach Turner Gill, and it didn’t take long for him to see why. The Jayhawks have issues on both sides of the ball — including the nation’s worst defense at nearly 44 points allowed per game in 2011 — and Weis took spring ball as an opportunity to start fixing what’s wrong. Many of Weis’s new colleagues have used the spring to settle on new quarterbacks. Baylor, Iowa State and Oklahoma State are among the Big 12 schools searching for signal callers.

Atlantic School Board to hold work session Tuesday

The Atlantic School District’s Board of Education will hold a work session Tuesday evening at the High School. On the agenda for their 7-p.m. session, is approval of resignations, a closed session, an update on the Schuler and Washington Building Leadership Teams (BLT), a report from Technology Coordinator Roger Warne, on a Technology Purchasing Plan, and discussion with regard to additional Elementary Classroom space.

Obituaries

NORMA ALICE WEDEMEYER (NORD), 88, formerly of Adair, died April 16th, at her home. Memorial services for NORMA WEDEMEYER will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., April 26th, at the United Methodist Church in Adair. Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

There is no visitation.

A private inurnment is scheduled for a later date in the Sunny Hill Cemetery in rural Adair.

Chiefs Look to Fill Holes Along Line in Draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs head into the NFL draft this week in an envious position. General manager Scott Pioli believes he’s filled most of the pressing needs on the roster – left tackle Eric Winston, running back Peyton Hillis, tight end Kevin Boss and cornerback Stanford Routt have all signed in free agency.  That means Pioli has a bit more flexibility when the Chiefs go on the clock Thursday night.  They have the No. 11 pick and are expected to go after help at middle linebacker or along the offensive and defensive lines. But with all those major holes already filled, Pioli also has the flexibility to pick a quarterback or some other position if the right opportunity presents itself.
