IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa inmate who sent a letter threatening to kill President Barack Obama has been sentenced to two years in prison. U.S. District Judge John Jarvey issued the sentence to 24-year-old Tommy Krueger during a hearing in Davenport. Krueger acknowledged he sent a letter to a federal marshal in December 2010 in which he warned that when he got out he would go to the White House to kill Obama “because he is a Muslim.” Krueger also wrote he would kill the Iowa governor and “anybody that get in my way.”

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A ticket sold at a grocery store in Cedar Rapids has matched the Powerball numbers and won someone a jackpot of $241 million. Iowa Lottery officials say the ticket was sold at a Hy-Vee on Edgewood Road in Cedar Rapids. The person or people holding the ticket have yet to step forward to claim the prize from Wednesday’s drawing.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a Sioux City man suspected of killing a man and injuring a woman after breaking into their home attacked them while they were asleep. Twenty-three-year-old James Kroll is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and first-degree burglary after the home invasion early Wednesday. Kroll’s bond was set yesterday at $1 million.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa has delayed a hearing to consider whether a suspended radiology professor should be terminated for alleged abusive behavior toward colleagues. The hearing into ethics charges against Malik Juweid was convened yesterday, and then delayed until today after one of three members of a faculty judicial panel was stranded at an airport in Texas. Juweid has been suspended from his $241,000-per-year job since January 2011.

LICKING, Mo. (AP) — A southwest Missouri man was sentenced to eight years in prison for setting arson fires at truck stops across six states, including Iowa. Forty-two-year-old Steven Price, a truck driver from Licking, Missouri, was sentenced yesterday on eight counts of arson.

Chiefs’ defense ends offseason program in style

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense will carry bragging rights into next months’ training camp. During a mock 2-minute drill to finish up their mandatory three-day minicamp Thursday, the defense stuffed the Kansas City offense, forcing a long field goal that kicker Ryan Succop missed wide left. The defense then turned around and stuffed the backup offense.  It was precisely the kind of spirited end to voluntary workouts and the minicamp that coach Romeo Crennel wanted to see. Crennel said he was encouraged by the amount of progress Kansas City has made the past few weeks, particularly in learning a new offensive system. He believes the Chiefs are well-positioned to hit the ground running when training camp starts in St. Joseph, Mo.
