Defending national champion North Dakota State is the preseason pick to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference title this season. The Bison, who won the Football Championship Subdivision championship last year, shared the conference title last season with Northern Iowa, which is second in the preseason poll conducted by league coaches, media and sports information directors. NDSU returns six starters on offense and seven on defense from a team that finished 14-1. The Bison received 37 of 38 first-place votes in the preseason poll. The other went to Illinois State. ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Tamba Hali didn’t turn down a single autograph request. Even after a grueling two-hour workout on the campus of Missouri Western State University on Thursday, the star outside linebacker signed for more than half an hour. In Hali’s world, nothing gets done halfway. The 28-year-old Penn State product serves as the elder statesman and most experienced player on Kansas City’s defense, a unit that ranked in the top half of the league last year. Hali led the Chiefs in sacks five of his first six seasons after Kansas City took him with a first-round draft choice in 2006. Coming off a 7-9 season, the Chiefs are counting on Hali to help the younger players around him develop.

DENVER (AP) — Tyler Colvin hit a tiebreaking double and rookie Josh Rutledge homered in his fourth straight game, lifting the Colorado Rockies over the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 Thursday night to avert a three-game sweep. Wilin Rosario hit his first career pinch-hit homer, a two-run shot off reliever Brian Fuentes in the eighth inning, and Jordan Pacheco went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs to help the Rockies snap a five-game losing streak. It was their first win in their last eight games at Coors Field. With the score deadlocked at 2, DJ LeMahieu singled off reliever Fernando Salas (1-4) to start the seventh inning and was sacrificed to second. Colvin then doubled to left to put the Rockies back on top.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Over 200 hogs from Iowa that were stranded in a broken-down semitrailer in central Nebraska have been released from custody. KNOP-TV in North Platte) says the hogs were loaded into another livestock truck Wednesday night for the trip to California. The hogs were stranded for several hours on Tuesday when the semi broke down on Interstate 80 in North Platte. Officials had to hose down the animals in the 90-plus degree weather, and they were finally taken to the Lincoln County fairgrounds. The truck was repaired but the driver was cited for several violations, including animal cruelty. A judge issued a court order to release the hogs Wednesday afternoon. The company transporting the hogs, Lynch Livestock, was ordered to by $1,500 for their care.

Wisconsin coach: Ball won’t be ready for camp

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema says star running back Montee Ball won’t be ready for camp after suffering a concussion during a street fight. According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Bielema said during a taping of a show at WISC-TV studios in Madison on Thursday that Ball won’t be ready when practice begins Monday. The Badgers open the season at home Sept. 1 against Northern Iowa. Bielema gave no indication Ball would suffer any long-term problems. He said Ball’s absence will spare last year’s Heisman Trophy finalist hits and give other backs more repetitions. Police said five men knocked Ball down as he was walking near campus early Wednesday. The men kicked him in the head and chest before fleeing.

LONDON (AP) — Make it a pair of golds for Gabby Douglas, who added the all-around title to the one she won with the U.S. team two nights ago.

Douglas became the third straight American to win gymnastics’ biggest prize, taking the lead on the very first event Thursday night and never really letting anyone else get close. She finished with a score of 62.232, less than three-tenths ahead of Viktoria Komova of Russia.

Douglas, who lives and trains in West Des Moines, brought the house down with her energetic floor routine, and U.S. teammates Jordyn Wieber, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross jumped to their feet and cheered when she finished. Douglas flashed a smile and coach Liang Chow lifted her off the podium.

Healing Garden Ribbon Cutting held in Atlantic

News

August 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Members of the Atlantic Ambassadors and Cass County Health System staff were on hand this (Thursday) morning, during a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Cass County Memorial Hospital’s new “Healing Garden.”

Dawn Marnin cuts the ribbon, with Atlantic Ambassadors

Dawn Marnin, Cass County Hospital Memorial Foundation Director, said the project was made possible at the start, by a gift from the Al and Chris Wernimont family. Al and his family wanted to help provide the healing feature at CCMH after they experienced the benefits of a natural setting during his cancer treatments.  It’s designed as a quiet space, where family members can go while their loved ones are in the hospital.  Marnin says there are measurable benefits to a Healing Garden, such as improving mood, reducing blood pressure, slowing the heart rate, relaxation of muscles, and the perception pain is lessened.

Dawn says there have been a number of donations in support of the project, including nearly all of the Cass County Health System employees.  She says she asked for 100-percent participation from their employees, and received 90-percent, which Marnin says is “absolutely huge.” She says the Atlantic and the residents of Cass County have been extremely supportive as well. The goal was to raise $300,000. At last report, Marnin says they had raised nearly $250,000. She thanked everyone who contributed any amount they could for the project.

Dawn says people are often surprised by the garden and the effect it has.  It’s equipped with trickling water fountains, colorful flowers, trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and a pergola for shade. There’s also an outdoor barbeque, which is designed for families who have to make an extended stay while their loved one is receiving treatment, but for hospital employee recognition events.  Donations are still being accepted to help pay for the Healing Garden, which Marnin says will eventually be open 24-hours per day.

Opportunities are also still available for you to purchase walkway paving bricks, bubbler fountains, and other amenities. For more information, call 71-243-7409, or go to www.casshealth.org.
