Police in Harlan said Thursday they are investigating two burglaries which occurred on February 25th. Officials say two garages were broken into. A power washer was taken from a garage in the 1600 block of 10th Street, and an air compressor was taken from a garage in the 900 block of Victoria. Both cases remain under investigation.

Police in Red Oak arrested one person on trespassing charges late Thursday night. Officials say 28-year old Tasha Renee Smith, of Red Oak, was being held at the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center on a $300 bond, following her arrest at around 9:20-p.m. for a Trespassing Violation. The incident happened at a residence on West Coolbaugh Street.
No injuries were reported after an SUV and a car collided Thursday evening, in Red Oak. According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened when the car, driven by 42-year old James Burton, of Plattsmouth, NE, turned in front of the SUV, driven by 58-year old Rodney McAlpin, of Red Oak. The accident happened at the intersection of Highways 34 and 48, at around 4:45-p.m. Damage amounted to $4,500. No citations were issued.
Police in Council Bluffs, Wednesday, arrested the fiance’ of a woman who, along with her 19-month old son, was shot last month outside of the apartment complex the couple shared. According to the Omaha World-Herald, 31-year old Nathan Underwood, was taken into custody on warrants for allegedly possessing a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a tax stamp violation and three counts of child endangerment. His arrest came nearly three -weeks after 22-year old Heather Wilson was shot eight times, allegedly by 30-year old Ronald Farr, Jr., of Harlan, who faces three counts of attempted murder. The incident happened during the early morning hours of February 12th, as Wilson was putting her son and his 4-year-old sister in a car.
When authorities searched Underwood’s apartment, they found more than 4 ounces of marijuana, packaging material and a digital scale. A rifle also was found under one of the children’s beds. Court records say Underwood was found carrying more than $6,000 in cash. Investigators say he admitted to taking the money from Farr as prepayment for drugs that Farr was supposed to pick up in California.
Underwood remained in the Pottawattamie County Jail on Thursday on $10,000 bail, while Farr was being held on $1 million bond. His arraignment is scheduled for March 18th. Wilson was critically injured in the shooting. Her son suffered from a gunshot wound to his arm. Both were expected to make a full recovery. An account was set up in Wilson’s name at First National Bank, to help with medical expenses.
A group of youngsters came through at the end Thursday for Harlan, and helped put the Cyclones in the Class 4A championship game. Liz Riessen, the only senior on the floor for Harlan at the time, hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer on a pass from sophomore Taylor Wagner and the eighth-ranked Cyclones went on to upset No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock 41-36. Wagner drove into the lane, found Riessen in the right corner and the 5-foot-10 senior buried the shot to give Harlan a 37-34 lead with 1:26 left. Wagner then made four of seven free throws in the final 45.9 seconds, enough for the Cyclones to hold on. Harlan is in the state tournament for the 10th time but has never won the championship. The Cyclones, now 23-2, will get their chance at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Wagner led Harlan with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Josie Esser and Jordyn Moser each scored seven points and Moser, a 5-foot-5 freshman point guard, hustled for six rebounds. During the closing minutes, with a trip to the state championship game on the line, Harlan coach Zach Klaassen trusted his team’s fortunes to Moser, Wagner, Riessen and sophomores Elle Kloewer and Jess Schaben. Schaben, a 6-foot-1 post player, gave the Cyclones a nice lift with seven rebounds and four blocks.
Aftin Phyfe led Waverly-Shell Rock with 11 points. Morgan Neuendorf added nine points for the Go-Hawks and Noami Phillips scored eight to go with 11 rebounds. Waverly-Shell Rock reached the state tournament for the first time in the five-player era and finished 21-3. Harlan led by as many as 10 points in the first half and was up 24-17 at the break. Waverly-Shell Rock then began chipping away but got the lead only once, at 31-30 on Neuendorf’s pull-up jumper in the lane at the start of the fourth quarter. Harlan regained the lead on freshman Taylor Frederick’s turnaround jumper.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team knew its challenge with two regular season games remaining.The Hawkeyes entered Senior Night on Thursday sitting with 17 wins and knowing that 19 looks a heck of a lot better to the NCAA Selection Committee than 17 or 18. They came away with a come-from-behind 75-70 victory against Indiana on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
On a night when the UI program honored seniors Morgan Johnson, Trisha Nesbitt, and Jaime Printy, a sophomore sharpshooter came off the bench to score a team-high 22 points and help dig the Hawkeyes out of an 18-point hole. Melissa Dixon made 5-of-13 3-point field goals — four coming in the first half — as she all but cemented the Big Ten Conference Sixth Player of the Year Award. Iowa outscored the Hoosiers 22-0 in bench points, and all 22 came from Dixon.
The Hawkeyes wrap up the regular season Sunday at Northwestern (13-15, 5-10) with a 2 p.m. (CT) tip. The Wildcats stunned Iowa 67-65 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 3. Northwestern lost 55-50 at Michigan on Feb. 28.
