ANNABEL PETERSEN, 89, of Atlantic, died Wed., March 6th, at the Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center. A Memorial service for ANNABEL PETERSEN will be held 11-a.m.  Mon., March 11th, at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita. Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home: On Friday (3/8), from 8-am-to 5:30-pm; On Saturday (3/9), from 9-am until Noon; and on Sunday (3/10), from 1-until 4-pm.  Her family will meet with friends and relatives from 4-to 6-pm Sunday, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Oakhill Cemetery, west of Brayton at 9:30-a.m. Monday (prior to the service).

SCOTT R. SHOOK, 42, of Guthrie Center, died Wed., March 6th, at the Taylor House, in Des Moines. Funeral services for SCOTT SHOOK will be held 10-a.m. Tue., March 12th, at the Guthrie Center High School Gymnasium, in Guthrie Center. Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Visitation at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Guthrie Center, will be held from 4-to 8pm Mon., March 11th, with the family present from 6-to 8-pm.

Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Guthrie Center.

SCOTT SHOOK is survived by:

His wife – Brenda, of Guthrie Center.

His children – Zoie & Kaden Shook, of Guthrie Center.

His parents – Gene & Karean (Kelsey) Shook,  of Guthrie Center.

His sister – Gail of Ames.

RAY LINGLE, 84, of Manilla, died Wed., March 6th, at the Manilla Manor. A funeral service for RAY LINGLE will be held 2-p.m. Mon., Mar., 11th** at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla is in charge of the arrangements. (**this is a change in time for the service, effective 3/10/13)

Burial will be at Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla.

Friends may call after 1-pm Monday, at the church (** a change from earlier posting).

Cake designers from Neb., Iowa compete in contest

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Cake designers from Nebraska and Iowa are using whipped frosting to put their creativity to the test. The designers will meet today (Thursday), in Council Bluffs for an annual cake challenge hosted by grocery store chain Hy-Vee. Organizers expect a large crowd to watch competitors quickly decorate cakes, cookies and cupcakes based on a theme of their choice. It’s the last of six regional contests to determine who will be the “Ace of Cakes” for 2013. The top three designers win cash prizes and a change to compete in a final competition at the end of March in Des Moines.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa lawmakers have decided not to change state law dealing with traffic cameras that ticket motorists for speeding or running red lights. The chairman of the House transportation committee yesterday decided against allowing a vote on a measure introduced by Republican Representative Walt Rogers of Cedar Falls. The proposal would have required cities and counties to get a permit from the Department of Transportation before installing new traffic cameras.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Dozens of Federal Aviation Administration employees in Iowa could be forced to take up to 11 days without pay due to automatic budget cuts. FAA Administrator Michael Huert emailed most agency employees Tuesday about the proposed furloughs this spring and summer. A representative for the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists in Waterloo says notices were sent to a dozen workers in Waterloo and Dubuque, and 14 in Cedar Rapids.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines-based Meredith Corporation is confirming the company held discussions with Time Warner about combining their magazines, but the deal has fallen apart. Instead, Time Warner announced yesterday it would split off its magazine unit into a separate, publicly traded company by the end of the year.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Senior Will Clyburn scored 20 points and Iowa State beat Number 13 Oklahoma State 87-76 last night to bolster its NCAA tournament hopes. Georges Niang added 18 points for the Cyclones, who notched just their second victory over a ranked opponent this season.

Iowa State beats No. 13 Oklahoma State 87-76

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Senior Will Clyburn scored 20 points and Iowa State beat No. 13 Oklahoma State 87-76 on Wednesday night to bolster its NCAA tournament hopes. Georges Niang added 18 points for the Cyclones (20-10, 10-7 Big 12), who notched just their second victory over a ranked opponent. Oklahoma State trailed by as many as 15 points, but Marcus Smart’s reverse dunk made it 70-68 with 4:28 left. Clyburn answered with a 3 and Tyrus McGee’s 3 a minute later put the Cyclones ahead 78-68.

Smart was brilliant for Oklahoma State (22-7, 12-5), scoring 24 points with eight rebounds and five steals. But it wasn’t enough as the Cowboys lost for just the second time in 12 games.

Westbrook sharp in win for Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jake Westbrook showed no ill effects of the bruised knee that forced him to leave his first spring start after one inning, limiting the Miami Marlins to a run and four hits over three innings of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 7-2 win Wednesday. Matt Holliday had a two-run homer, one of five long balls for the Cardinals. Top prospect Oscar Taveras put St. Louis on top in the second inning, connecting for a two-run homer to center field off Tom Koehler. Ronny Cedeno, Matt Adams and Rob Johnson also homered for St. Louis.

Koehler didn’t help his effort to make the ball club, failing to get out of the third inning. Koehler allowed four runs, seven hits and walked two batters in 2 1-3 innings.

Dorsey hits ground running as Chiefs’ new GM

John Dorsey hasn’t wasted any time since he was hired to replace Scott Pioli as the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, making a series of bold moves to shore up the roster. Dorsey said in a phone interview with The Associated Press late Wednesday that the decision to sign wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and punter Dustin Colquitt to long-term deals, and place the franchise tag on left tackle Branden Albert, are all part of a plan he set out upon his arrival.

The Chiefs have also traded for San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith and restructured the contract of defensive lineman Tyson Jackson, though Dorsey could not comment on either of the moves because the new league year doesn’t begin until Tuesday.

Chiefs release right tackle Eric Winston

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs made another move in their roster overhaul under new leadership Wednesday night, releasing right tackle Eric Winston after only one season. The team had not announced the move, but Winston said on Twitter: “Just wanted to confirm that I have been released.” Winston went on to say that although he had a difficult season, “I wouldn’t trade the relationships I made in KC and the overall experience I had for anything.”

Winston signed a four-year, $22 million deal last offseason, but he struggled early in the year and then ran afoul of some fans after he criticized a small percentage for cheering when embattled quarterback Matt Cassel sustained a head injury during a game. Winston would have made $4.9 million in base salary this season. The move saves the Chiefs $6.5 million against the salary cap.
