Atlantic P&Z to meet this (Tuesday) evening

The City of Atlantic’s Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to meet this (Tuesday) evening, in the Council’s chambers at City Hall. During their 5:30-p.m. session, the Commission will welcome and introduce Ed Angell to the panel, and nominate someone to the position of Vice-Chair. 

The Board will also have an overview of the Zoning Ordinance update timetable, and review updated Zoning Ordinance articles, including those pertaining to R-4 Multi-family, R-5 High Density Affordable Family, and R-6 Mobile Home Park, districts.

ERNEST ARMSTRONG, JR., 85, of Anita, died March 11th, 2013. A private military service for ERNEST ARMSTRONG, JR., will be held Wed., June 12th. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Condolences may be left to the family at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.

Military honors will be conducted during the burial by Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Persia boy falls off, and is run over by a tractor

A 10-year old boy from Persia suffered serious injuries after he fell from, and was run over by, his fathers tractor. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reports Cole Pauley was riding on the fender of a 1066 International tractor at around 9:30-p.m., Monday, when he fell off the machine being driven by his father, Robert Pauley. After being run over by the tractor, Cole was transported by LifeNet Helicopter to an undisclosed hospital in Omaha. The accident took place in the 400-block of Shelby County Road M-16, a Level-B road. Shelby Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

Basic Cake Mix (6-11-13)

  • 9 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 6 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups shortening, softened

In large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt and ad the softened shortening.  Cut in until the mixture resembles very fine crumbs.  Divide the mix into four equal portions of 4 1/2 cups each.  Place in airtight containers and store in a cool, dry place for up to two months.  Or place in freezer containers and freeze for up to six months.

To use:  all the mix to come to room temperature.

7 Minute Microwave Pickles (6-11-13)

Mom's Tips

  • 2 cups cucumbers sliced thinly
  • 1 onion sliced thinly
  • 1/2 green pepper, sliced in thin strips

Syrup:

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed

Warm the solution, then….

Place cucumbers in microwave dish, pour syrup solution over them.  Cook three minutes, stir, cook additional four minutes.  Keep in refrigerator.

Saina named ISU athlete of the year

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State track star Betsy Saina has been named the school’s female athlete of the year for the second year in a row. Saina won her third NCAA title last weekend, taking first in the 10,000 meters at the national outdoor meet in Fayetteville, Ark.  Saina also finished second in the 5,000 and fourth in the 3,000. 

Saina won eight Big 12 titles and earned All-America honors 11 times in her career. She is the fifth Cyclone woman to win athlete of the year twice. Golfer Scott Fernandez was named Iowa State’s male athlete of the year on Monday.
