WINIFRED MAY GUST, 96, of Audubon, died Wed., Aug. 28th, at the Friendship Home in Audubon. Funeral services for WINIFRED GUST will be held 2-p.m. Sat., Aug. 31st, at the Kessler Funeral Home, in Audubon.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family will be present beginning at 6-p.m. Friday (8/30).

Burial will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon.

WINIFRED GUST is survived by:

Her sons – Robert (Judy) Gust, of Audubonb, & Dale (Cheryl) Gust, of Templeton.

Her sister – Betty (Duane) Laughery, of Las Vegas, NV.

9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, 8 step great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.

RICHARD “RICK” HANSEN, 85, of Brayton, died Thu., Aug. 29th, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon. Funeral services for RICHARD HANSEN will be held 10-a.m. Sat., Aug. 31st, at the Brayton Lutheran Church. Kessler Funeral Home in Exira has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family visitation begins at 5-p.m. Friday (8/30).

Burial will be in the Oakfield Cemetery, east of Brayton.

His children – David (Margy) Hansen, of Exira, & Shari (Ron) Beymer, of Hamlin.

His brother – Dale (Melva) Hansen, of Scott City, KS.

Pott. County man arrested in Adams County Thu. morning

A Pottawattamie County man was arrested early Thursday morning after being pulled over for a moving violation. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports 21-year old Dillon Jackson, of Council Bluffs, was stopped at around 12:15-a.m. on Highway 34, for having no license plates on his vehicle. Deputies also determined Jackson had no valid driver’s license, no insurance for the vehicle and no registration. In addition the “In-Transit” stickers were found to be fraudulently placed on the vehicles’ windows.

Jackson has appeared before a judge, plead guilty to the charges, and was subsequently released on bond.

Vilsack will lead immigration talk in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will be in Des Moines to host a discussion about immigration reform. The former two-term Iowa governor will host what the Agriculture Department describes as a round-table discussion about the importance of immigration reform for Iowa’s agriculture and rural communities. The event will be held this (Friday) morning at Iowa State University’s center in downtown Des Moines.

Vilsack’s participation follows the White House’s release of a report, which argues that immigration reform would help ease a shortage of agricultural workers.

DeSoto refuge sets final Family Fishing Day

MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa (AP) — DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge has scheduled the summer’s final Family Fishing Day for Saturday morning. Activities will take place at the refuge’s South Gate Recreation Area from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include basic instruction and fun fishing opportunities. Youths younger than 16 can fish without licenses.

Participants may take their own equipment or use equipment and bait provided by the refuge. All children participating in the fishing clinic will receive a free T-shirt. An entrance permit is required for all vehicles. Permits may be obtained at pay stations near the entrances or at the Visitor Center.

DeSoto and Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuges sit north of Omaha, Neb., along U.S. Highway 30 between Missouri Valley, Iowa, and along U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun, Neb.

The National Weather Service in Omaha has extended a HEAT ADVISORY that is currently in effect until 7-p.m. Friday (Today). The ADVISORY now includes the following counties in western & southwest Iowa:
MONONA-HARRISON-SHELBY-POTTAWATTAMIE-MILLS-MONTGOMERY-FREMONT & PAGE, in addition to the remainder of the State. The western/sw Iowa ADVISORY begins at 1-p.m., and expires at 7-p.m.

TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO CLIMB INTO THE MID AND UPPER 90S THIS AFTERNOON. THE TEMPERATURES WILL COMBINED WITH HIGH HUMIDITY TO CREATE HEAT INDEX VALUES FROM 103 TO 108 FOR A TIME THIS AFTERNOON. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL CREATE AN INCREASED THREAT FOR HEAT EXHAUSTION OR HEAT STROKE…ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WORKING OUTDOORS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. EAGLE GROVE, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa school superintendent says students were released all week because of the heat. Eagle Grove Superintendent Jeff Toliver says the window air conditioners in the 1920s-era school simply couldn’t keep up with this week’s high temperatures. Students are scheduled to be back after the Labor Day holiday weekend.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Fire crews have spent hours pouring water onto a blaze in a warehouse near downtown Des Moines. Thick black smoke rose from the warehouse and stretched above much of Des Moines’ eastside. The building on Scott Avenue was less than a mile southeast of the state Capitol. There were no reports of injuries. The Register reports the same building caught fire in July.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Officials at Clarke University say the school’s annual blessing of cadavers for anatomy study reminds students that the bodies once belonged to loving people. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports faculty and students gathered Wednesday to bless the 10 cadavers as well as the school’s new $13 million science facility.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say an Oklahoma woman barred from being near the band Hanson was arrested after showing up at their events in Des Moines. Police say 25-year-old Alexandra Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma was arrested Wednesday night after she was spotted in the crowd at the band’s downtown concert. Local television station KCCI reports all three Hanson brothers have a protective order against Martin.
