Nine Hawkeyes scored at least five points. Mike Gesell scored 10 points. Gabe Olaseni added eight points, six rebounds and three blocks. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery graduated from Penn. He played three seasons with the Quakers from 1979-82.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Cedar Rapids man faces an attempted murder charge in connection with a shooting. The Cedar Rapids Police Department says 26-year-old Delamar Williams was arrested yesterday following the morning shooting of 25-year-old Marneze McKnight. Williams was taken to Linn County Jail. McKnight remains hospitalized.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court has disbarred a Davenport real estate lawyer who was convicted of helping buyers secure inflated mortgage loans before the 2008 market crash. The court on Friday revoked the law license of Marc Engelmann, who is serving a three-year prison term on fraud charges.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court says a dentist convicted of evading taxes must pay them back with penalties and interest. The court ruled Friday that a judge should have included those costs in a restitution order for former Waverly dentist Marc Hagen. The judge says he did not believe he had the authority to order the payment of civil penalties and interest to the Iowa Department of Revenue in a criminal case. Instead, he only required Hagen to pay back the amount of unpaid taxes, roughly $10,000.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Losing seasons and a chilly forecast have dampened the excitement for Saturday night’s game between Kansas and Iowa State. The Cyclones have won three straight in the series, but they’re also headed into tonight’s game in Ames on a seven-game losing skid.

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — Deon Mitchell scored 23 points, one of three Northern Iowa players to break the 20-point mark, as the Panthers beat Loyola Marymount 90-81 in the opener of the Paradise Jam on Friday. Matt Bohannon had 22 points, Seth Tuttle added 21 and grabbed 11 rebounds for Northern Iowa (2-2). The Panthers shot 51 percent, including 12 of 21 from 3-point range.

Northern Iowa went to the line 39 times, making 28 of them. The Lions, on the other hand, made 15 of their 21 attempts. The Panthers led 53-36 at the half, after going 10 of 14 from 3-point range.

Iowa gets another crack at Michigan

Sports

November 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The lowest point of Iowa’s disastrous 2012 season came at Michigan, where the Wolverines handed the Hawkeyes their biggest loss in five years. Iowa gets another shot at Michigan on Saturday and a chance to show the rest of the Big Ten how far it’s come. The Hawkeyes (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten) can clinch at least a .500 record in league play and improve their bowl status if they beat Michigan for a third straight time in Iowa City.

Michigan (7-3, 3-3) needed a late field goal and three overtimes to beat Northwestern 27-19 last week. The Wolverines rank next to last in the Big Ten in rushing offense and just seventh in scoring defense. Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner had six touchdowns in a 42-17 blowout of Iowa last season.

Regina blanks St. Edmond 35-0

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City Regina now stands alone among Iowa high school football programs. Drew Cook completed all 13 of his passes and Regina ran its winning streak to a state-record 56 games in beating Fort Dodge St. Edmond 35-0 Friday to capture the Class 1A state championship.

It was the fourth consecutive title for the top-ranked Regals, who had been tied with the great Waterloo East teams of the late 1960s with 55 straight wins. East compiled its streak from 1965-71, before the state had postseason playoffs.

St. Edmond (13-1) brought the stingiest defense in 1A, giving up only 7 points a game. But the fourth-ranked Gaels were no match for the highly skilled Regals (14-0), who joined Solon as the only schools with four straight championships.

Iowa State seeks 1st Big 12 win against Kansas

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Losing seasons and a chilly forecast have dampened the excitement for Saturday night’s game between Kansas and host Iowa State. For the Jayhawks and Cyclones, there’s actually quite a bit to play for.

It would be huge for the rebuilding efforts of coach Charlie Weis if the Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6 Big 12) can string together back-to-back Big 12 wins for the first time since 2008. It will be senior day for Iowa State (1-9, 0-7), and one last chance for a banged-up team to show that its home fans that they weren’t as bad as their record indicates.

The Cyclones have won three straight in the series, but they’re also on a seven-game losing skid.

Iowa officials: Health patient choked on food

News

November 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CLARINDA, Iowa (AP) – Iowa officials say they’ve revised meal distribution policies at a state mental health institute after a patient fatally choked on food he shouldn’t have been served. The state Department of Human Services says food service procedures at Clarinda Mental Health Institute were not followed when a patient in the geriatric psychiatry program was given a peanut butter sandwich on Sept. 1 instead of pureed food. He was later found unresponsive and slumped over a dining table.

Officials say they began an internal investigation and at least one employee has been fired. DHS Director Charles M. Palmer says the incident was isolated. The Department of Inspections and Appeals surveyed the facility in early November. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services also issued a civil penalty of more than $8,000.
