Updated School Board Agenda leaves out bond petition

In a late revision to the Atlantic School Board Work Session agenda for Monday night, the planned reception of petitions asking the Board to call for a Special Election has been withdrawn. Superintendent Dr. Michael Amstein sent a copy of the revised agenda to KJAN News late Friday evening.

Thursday night and Friday, we had reported the Atlantic School Board was scheduled to vote on a Resolution setting the date for a vote on a $19.9-million dollar bond referendum, after receiving a petition from the Atlantic School Improvement Committee (ASIC). Both of those items have been removed from the updated agenda. The reason was not given.

Other action items during Monday night’s Atlantic School Board Work Session include approval of personnel recommendations, and payment for the Spanish Trip. Discussion items during the work session include:The Fiscal Year 2015 Budget and Board Long-term goals. The meeting will conclude with an informal evaluation of the Superintendent.The meeting begins at 7:30-p.m., Monday.

Loyola of Chicago beats Northern Iowa 93-87 in OT

CHICAGO (AP) – Milton Doyle scored eight of his 28 points in overtime to lift Loyola of Chicago to a 93-87 overtime victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday. Doyle hit a 3-pointer and was 5 of 6 from the line as Loyola outscored Northern Iowa 17-11 in overtime.  Doyle finished 8 of 11 from the field and made 10 of his 11 free throws attempts.

Loyola of Chicago trailed the entire second half until Christian Thomas made a pair of free throws to tie it at 76 with 18 seconds to play.  With 4 seconds remaining, Deon Mitchell missed a shot and Seth Tuttle missed the putback for Northern Iowa to send the game into overtime.  Thomas finished with 20 points for Loyola of Chicago (8-12, 3-5 Missouri Valley).

Mitchell scored 23 points, and Tuttle added 17 to lead Northern Iowa (10-10, 4-4 Missouri Valley).

No. 16 Iowa State beats 22nd-ranked K-State 81-75

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Three straight losses and the distraction caused by the ongoing Bubu Palo saga left No. 16 Iowa State in desperate need of some good news.A close win over a ranked opponent was a good place for the Cyclones to start. Melvin Ejim scored 20 points and Iowa State beat No. 22 Kansas State 81-75 on Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak and get back to .500 in the Big 12.

Georges Niang had 18 points and freshman Matt Thomas matched a career high with 14 for the Cyclones (15-3, 3-3 Big 12), who blew a 12-point halftime lead before putting the game away late in the second half. Freshman Marcus Foster scored 20 points for Kansas State (14-6, 4-3), which lost consecutive games for the first time since November.

Iowa State had opened the season at 14-0, the best start in school history. But losses to Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas had considerably cooled the program’s national buzz and sent it tumbling eight spots in this week’s poll.Then last week, a district court judge ruled that Palo, a reserve guard who averaged 2.8 points a game last season, be reinstated in a move that angered the administration and dominated local headlines.

Palo had been kicked off the team in August in connection with sexual assault charges that were eventually dropped. The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday denied a request by the Iowa Board of Regents for an immediate stay of that ruling. Palo spent the game on the bench and in uniform, but Hoiberg refused to comment on Palo after the game.

Kansas State was coming off a buzzer-beating loss at Texas, as Jonathan Holmes hit a 3 as time expired for a 67-64 Longhorns’ win on Tuesday.

VIOLET “Vi” CLEMSEN, 88, of Carroll (& formerly of Audubon), died Fri., Jan. 24th, at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. Funeral services for “Vi” Clemsen will be held 10:30-a.m. Mon. Jan. 27th, at the Central Church of Christ in Carroll. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family visitation is from 2-to 5-pm on Sunday. (1/26).

Burial will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon.

VIOLET “Vi” CLEMSEN is survived by:

Her daughters – Vickie (Frank) Jorgensen, and Virlee (John) Sklenar, all of Carroll; and Vilinda (Doug) Gleason, of Audubon.

8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and her brother- and sisters-in law, other relatives and friends.

LESLIE “LUCKY” OSBORN, 70, of Atlantic, died Fri., Jan. 24th, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Funeral services for “LUCKY” OSBORN will be held 1:30-p.m. Thu., Jan. 30th, at the 1st Church of Christ in Atlantic. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday (1/26) from 1-to 4pm; Mon. & Tues. from 8am-to 5:30-pm, and on Wed. from 8am until the family meets with friends from 5-to 7-pm, Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

His sons – D.J. Osborn, of Atlantic; Todd (Rhonda) Osborn, of Dallas Center.

His daughter – Marcey (Barry) Fickbohm, of Manhattan, KS.

(Update) Former Police Officer accidentally shoots himself in Glenwood

The Omaha World-Herald reports a man who accidentally shot himself while in his vehicle outside of an elementary school in Glenwood, was a former police officer. Douglas Trent Good was hit in the leg when his .9-mm weapon discharged sometime between 3:15-and 3:30-p.m., Friday, outside of West Elementary, in Glenwood. The vehicle was parked in a playground area as children were walking out of school, but no children were hurt. Good was waiting to pick up a child at the time the gun went off.

The Mills County Attorney told the paper Good called 9-1-1- and was taken to a hospital, but there is no report available on his condition. Good is a former Glenwood and Creston Police Officer, and has taught firearms training classes for people seeking permits to carry concealed weapons.He reportedly has a Master’s degree from Bellevue University.

Police are investigating why he had the weapon on school property and what caused it to fire.

Blizzard watch issued for parts of eastern Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowans are preparing for another blast of frigid and dangerous winter weather this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory starting Saturday night in parts of eastern Iowa, and a blizzard watch for parts of northern and central Iowa into eastern Iowa on Sunday. Snow is expected in the northeast Saturday night. But by Sunday, strong winds of up to 50 mph are expected to create whiteout conditions in some areas.

Temperatures are also expected to plummet late Sunday, with lows coming in around 15-below zero in the northeast to near zero in southern Iowa. Wind chills of almost 50-below could hit some areas.
