Minor in Possession Arrests in Montgomery County

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of two teenagers on alcohol charges Saturday, March 1st.  At approximately 12:17am officers pulled over a vehicle for a driving infraction on L Avenue approximately 1/4 mile north of 130th Street in Montgomery County.  During the stop 18-year-old Brooklyn M. Chickering of Malvern and 15-year-old Merika K. Houtchens of Red Oak were arrested and charged with Possession of Alcohol under the age of 21 and Minor in Possession of Alcohol respectively.

Both were taken into custody and transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center without incident.  Houtchens was processed and released to the custody of a parent.  Chickering was processed and released on citation.

COURTNEY JOHNSTON, 27, of Dexter (& formerly of Greenfield), died Fri., Feb. 28th, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services for COURTNEY JOHNSTON will be held 10:30-a.m. Fri., March 7th, at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, March 6th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery. A luncheon will be held following the committal services at the United Methodist Church.

Memorials: To the Courtney Johnston memorial fund to be established by the family at a later date.

His wife – Kathy Johnston and son Lane Johnston, of Dexter.

His parents – Gale and Kally Johnston of Greenfield.

VERDELLA L. SMITH, 89, Longtime Atlantic Resident died Fri., Feb 28th at The Heritage House in Atlantic.  Memorial services for VERDELLA SMITH will be held Tuesday, March 4th at 11:00am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic.  Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Burial in the Atlantic Cemetery will be held at a later time, due to the weather conditions.

Visitation will Monday, March 3rd from 8-to 5:30-pm at the Roland Funeral Home. The Family will meet with friends at a luncheon following the memorial service.  Online condolences can be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.

Iowa St PG Morris on pace for NCAA record

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State addressed its lack of experience at point guard with senior transfer DeAndre Kane. It turned out that the kid coach Fred Hoiberg recruited for the job was ready for it all along. Freshman Monte Morris has become indispensable for the 15th-ranked Cyclones (22-5, 10-5 Big 12), largely because he’s better at protecting the basketball than anyone in the country.

Morris has 101 assists against just 17 turnovers this season. He’s on pace to shatter the NCAA’s assist-to-turnover ratio record of 3.96-to-1 set by Tyler Newbold of Utah State in 2009. Iowa State, which has won seven of eight since making Morris a starter, faces Kansas State (19-9, 9-6) on Saturday.

Red Oak man arrested for violating probation

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest this (Friday) morning, of a man wanted on a warrant for Violating his Probation. 31-year old Kyle R. Archer, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 10-a.m. and brought to the  Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center, where his bond was set at $5,000.
