News

July 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

A bicyclist from Harlan was injured after she was hit by an inattentive driver Saturday evening in Shelby County. Sheriff’s officials say 49-year old Kimberly Sue Zaccone, who was wearing her helmet,  suffered injuries to her left knee and hip area, as well as a case of “road rash,” after she was hit by a 2005 Dodge Caravan. The driver, 40-year old Erik John Nielsen, of Harlan, told authorities that as he was traveling south on Linden Road at around 4:20-p.m., he was looking at a corn field, and didn’t see Zaccone. The van’s side view mirror struck the woman, knocking her to the ground. She was transported to Myrtue Memorial Hospital by Medivac Ambulance. No citations were issued.

(Update) Harlan woman injured in motorcycle accident

News

July 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

In  a follow-up to our story over the weekend, sheriff’s officials in Shelby County report one person was injured during a single-vehicle accident Saturday morning, about three and one-half miles east of Earling. Deputy Glenn Birks with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told KJAN News two motorcycles were traveling north on Highway 59 at around 9:20-a.m. One of the cycles, driven by 48-year old Denise Barnes, of Harlan, went out of control about 2.5-miles north of Highway 37.

Barnes told authorities she heard a rattle or some sort of noise under her 2007 Harley Davidson. The cycle then locked-up the rear brakes, sending the bike into a skid. Barnes tried to maintain control, but the cycle ended-up on its side, sliding down the highway. Barnes, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported by Earling Rescue to Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.

The woman said later, that the last thing she remembers was that the motorcycle had started to shake. The cycle sustained $10,000 damage. No citations were issued.  Assisting sheriffs deputies at the scene, were rescue crews from Westphalia 1st Responders, Earling Rescue, Medivac, and the Iowa State Patrol.(9-a.m. News)
