Red Oak man arrested Sunday morning

A traffic stop early this (Sunday) morning in Red Oak, resulted in an arrest. Red Oak Police say 26-year old Richard Dean Pierce, the 3rd, of Red Oak, was pulled over just before 5-a.m., at the intersection of Highway 34 and Highway 48. Pierce was taken into custody for Driving While Suspended. His bond was set at $566.

Hawaii holds off Northern Iowa 27-24

HONOLULU (AP) – Steven Lakalaka rushed for a career-high 124 yards and a touchdown as Hawaii beat Northern Iowa 27-24 Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors (1-2) rushed for 148 yards against the Panthers (0-2) and also saw their defense and special teams put points on the board.

Defensive lineman Beau Yap opened the scoring by recovering a UNI fumble in the end zone and Tyler Hadden had a field goal in each half. Lakalaka shouldered the load with standout Joey Iosefa out with a fractured ankle suffered in a loss to Oregon State last week. Lakalaka averaged 3.9 yards on a career-high 32 carries and scored on a 30-yard run late in the third quarter. His previous career-best was a 104-yard performance on 19 carries against Army last year.

Quarterback Ikaika Woolsey threw for 188 yards on 14-of-30 passing, including a 15-yard touchdown to Harold Moleni in the second quarter.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A proposal by law enforcement leaders could soon see all Iowa City and Coralville police officers wearing body-mounted cameras to record their interactions with the public. The city councils of both Iowa communities are considering requests from their respective police departments to purchase the cameras, the Iowa City Press-Citizen reported on Saturday.

KALONA, Iowa (AP) — Twin County Dairy in southeast Iowa has closed its doors. The Iowa Press-Citizen reports the dairy, more commonly known as the Kalona Cheese Factory, closed on Thursday. It had employed about 50 people. The Cheese House, a cheese shop located in the factory, will remain open.

MACEDONIA, Iowa (AP) — The pilot of a helicopter that crashed last week in western Iowa’s Pottawattamie County died Thursday at the Omaha hospital where he was being treated. The Omaha World-Herald reports Chris Moore was operating the crop-dusting helicopter over a bean field near Macedonia, Iowa when it hit a power line on September 6th and crashed.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Cole Netten hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left and Iowa State rallied to beat Iowa 20-17 yesterday. Sam Richardson had 255 yards passing and 2 TDs for the Cyclones (1-2), who beat the rival Hawkeyes for the third time in four tries. Iowa State took a 17-14 lead with 7:33 left on Richardson’s 27-yard TD pass to DeVondrick Nealy. Iowa answered with Marshall Koehn’s 44-yard field goal with 4:08 to go.

Pott. County Atty. clears deputy U-S Marshal in fugitive shooting incident

Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber announced on Friday that criminal charges will not be filed against a U.S. Marshals Service deputy who shot a fugitive during standoff in Council Bluffs in May. According to the Omaha World-Herald, Deputy U.S. Marshal Scott Cannon of the Southern District of Iowa office was cleared of criminal wrongdoing after an investigation by the Council Bluffs Police Department. The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reviewed that investigation. Cannon, however, could face further scrutiny from the Marshals Service after giving inconsistent statements in the case.

Authorities arrested 39-year old Daniel Hannan Jr.,  after he was shot during an incident that started around 11-a.m. on May 29th, when a fugitive task force served a high-risk warrant on the suspect at his home. The bullet merely grazed the man’s arm. Council Bluffs police described the warrant as “high risk” because of Hannan’s history of assault and drug arrests, saying the suspect has a history of methamphetamine use and erratic behavior.The suspect was also known to possess guns, though on the scene his mother indicated Hannan had only an air-soft gun.

As members of the task force arrived at the scene, Cannon fired a single shot through the front door, which struck Hannan in the upper right arm. Matt Wilber said after reviewing the evidence..which included a video taken by a neighbor…the incident was a case of the deputy’s weapon discharging accidentally.

Wilber said his report will be sent to the U.S. Marshals Service in Washington, D.C., and the Southern District of Iowa office in Des Moines, with the service’s internal affairs unit expected to investigate. Hannan remains held without bond, at the Pottawattamie County Jail.

Norvell leads Western Illinois past Drake 38-13

MAYCOMB, Ill. (AP) — Trenton Norvell accounted for two touchdowns to lead Western Illinois to a 38-13 victory over Drake Saturday. Norvell completed his first five pass attempts, then rushed for a 7-yard touchdown on Western Illinois’ opening drive. He threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Quadarias Mireles in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Leathernecks.

Norvell was 15 of 22 for 205 yards and J.C. Baker ran for 130 yards on 20 carries to lead Western Illinois (2-1). Cody Thibault came off the bench and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Michael Hudson and Ben Tesson kicked a 43-yard field goal to pull Drake (1-2) within 14-10 at the half.

David McDaniel blocked a Cam Bohnert punt and Brad Blumenshine returned it 27 yards for a touchdown to give Western Illinois a 28-10 lead in the third quarter.

Cardinals hold off Rockies 5-4

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday homered in the first inning for the second straight night and Shelby Miller pitched six solid innings and had an RBI double, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.

Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer in the second for the NL Central leaders, who have won 12 in a row at home in the final month of the season dating to last Sept. 14. Of their 10 runs in the first two games of this series, seven have come in the first two innings. The Cardinals are 9-4 this month and took a 3 1-2 game lead over Pittsburgh.

Wilin Rosario, Josh Rutledge and pinch-hitter Michael McHenry had an RBI apiece in the ninth and the Rockies put the tying run on second before Pat Neshek got pinch-hitter Rafael Ynoa to fly out for his sixth save in nine chances.

Iowa State rallies past Iowa 20-17

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Cole Netten hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left and Iowa State rallied to beat Iowa 20-17 on Saturday, picking up its first win of the season. Sam Richardson had 255 yards passing and 2 TDs for the Cyclones (1-2), who beat the rival Hawkeyes (2-1) for the third time in four tries.

Iowa State took a 17-14 lead with 7:33 left on Richardson’s 27-yard TD pass to DeVondrick Nealy. Iowa answered with Marshall Koehn’s 44-yard field goal with 4:08 to go. Netten appeared to miss his first try at the game-winner, but Iowa had already called a timeout. Netten’s second attempt went straight through the uprights.

Jake Rudock threw for 146 yards and an interception for Iowa, which was held to just three points after halftime.

Pilot in western Iowa helicopter crash dies in Omaha

MACEDONIA, Iowa (AP) – The pilot of a helicopter that crashed last week in Pottawattamie County has died at the Omaha hospital where he was being treated. An official with Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha told the Omaha World-Herald that 26-year old Christopher Moore, of Creston, died Thursday.

Moore was operating the crop-dusting helicopter over a bean field near Macedonia when it hit a power line on Sept. 6th and crashed. Treynor Fire Chief Russ Maguire had said Moore was out of the wreckage and conscious when paramedics arrived following the crash. Authorities had said at the time that his injuries weren’t believed to have been life-threatening.

Funeral services for Chris Moore will be held Tuesday.
