Groups call for volunteers for Missouri River cleaning

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – The Missouri River between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska, is in for a spring cleaning this month. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports that three groups – Missouri River Relief of Columbia, Missouri, and Back to the River and Fontenelle Forest, both of Omaha – will team up for the river cleanup project on June 13.

The event headquarters will be the boat ramps at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs, with the cleanup running from 9 a.m. until noon. Organizers will provide volunteers with gloves, trash bags, an event T-shirt and reusable water bottle. Volunteers are encouraged to bring sunglasses and bug spray and wear appropriate clothes for the work, including boots or tennis shoes and long pants to protect against poison ivy.

ROSE MARY REINIG, 83, of Harlan, died Fri., June 5th, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. A Mass of Christian Burial service for ROSE MARY REINIG will be held 10:30-a.m. Tue., June 9th, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from Noon until 8-pm Mon., June 8th, with the family greeting friends from 6-until 8-pm, and a Wake service at 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

ROSE MARY REINIG is survived by:

Her daughters – Joan (Ralph) Bruck, of Harlan; Teresa (Bryan Cisar) Reinig, of Papillion, NE; Rita (Grant) Christensen, of Omaha, & Ann (Scott) Mahlberg, of Houston, TX.

Her sons – Thomas Reinig, of Pueblo, CO; & Jim (Lisa) Reinig, of Tucson, AZ.

Her brothers – Fred (Ann) Schmiedeler, of South Bend, IN, & Pat (Peggy) Schmiedeler, of Rio Rancho, NM.

Her sisters – Dorothy (Donald) Flake, of Florissant, MO., & Martha Schmiedeler, of Rio Rancho, NM.

4 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and her sister-in-law.

Red Oak Police Report Arrest

Red Oak Police, Saturday, arrested 32 year old Joseph Aaron Nelson, of Red Oak. Nelson was taken into custody for domestic abuse assault, and was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center.

Iowa woman accused of attacking family with motorized mop

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman accused of attacking her family with a Swiffer Wet Jet has been arrested on charges of domestic abuse and assault. The Des Moines Register reports that police arrived at the woman’s home Monday on reports of child endangerment and found the 45-year-old woman visibly upset. She told police her husband and son had attacked her.

But family members told a different story — namely that the woman had attacked them with the motorized mop. The son said his parents argue a lot and that he had caught the attack on video using his cellphone. Police reviewed the video and say it showed the woman hitting her family members with the Swiffer.

WHAT’S IN THOSE OATMEAL COOKIES?—adapted from kingarthurlour.com

Ingredients:

1 c. butter, room temperature
1 c. granulated sugar
½ c. brown sugar
1 t. vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1-1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. baking soda
½ t. salt
2 t. Chinese Five Spice Powder (original recipe called for 1 t. cinnamon as the only spice)
3 c. old-fashioned rolled oats (Old-fashioned oats will give a great chewy texture. I discourage the use of quick or instant oats in this recipe.)
1 c. Grape-Nuts cereal
2 T. sesame seeds, toasted

Optional add-ins—

½ c. semisweet chocolate chips
½ c. shredded coconut
½ c. raisins
½ c. toasted pecans, chopped

Method:

To toast sesame seeds, put small frying pan on range top on low to medium heat. Add sesame seeds. Stir frequently until lightly brown. (Keep a constant vigil on this as all-of-a-sudden, they could burn.) Cool slightly.

In mixing bowl, beat together butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs, one at a time, beating until well combined. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and Chinese Five Spice Powder. Slowly add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating until well combined. Add oatmeal, cereal, and toasted sesame seed and blend until combined. Add optional add-ins. (May need to stir by hand if optional add-ins make dough too stiff for mixer to handle). Refrigerate dough (covered) for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or Teflon baking sheets. Using a cookie scoop, spoon, or your clean hands, drop balls (about 2 inches in diameter) onto cookie sheets. Bake for approximately 10-12 minutes, (Cookies will become less chewy the longer they are baked.) until just beginning to brown around the edges. Remove from oven. Do not remove cookies from cookie sheets until slightly cool. Makes about 40 cookies.
