20160220_180845Southwest Iowa and Hawkeye 10 wrestling showed very well at the 2016 Iowa High School Wrestling Championships.  Out of the wrestlers we were following in the KJAN listening area there were 4 State Champions, 6 Runner-Ups, and 25 Place-winners.  Champions were: 3A-152 Colton Clingenpeel of Council Bluffs-Thomas Jefferson, 2A-152 Matt Malcom of Glenwood, 2A-170 Chase Shiltz of Creston/Orient-Macksburg, and 1A-126 Alex Thomsen of Underwood.

The Atlantic/CAM Wrestling team had a very good showing by tying a school record with 4 place-winners in one tournament.  Carter Cox led the way with a Runner-Up finish at 113.  Kole Hansen placed 5th at 106.  Zac Stork finished 8th at 182 and John McConkey was also 8th at 285. All Atlantic/CAM wrestlers that came to the tournament made it past day one with Chase McLaren and Keagan Hosfelt also reprenting the team and coming up short on day 2.  All of Atlantic/CAM’s State Qualifiers aside from Hosfelt will be back on a very strong squad next season.

20160220_215927 The Creston Orient-Macksburg Panthers wrestling team took advantage of a deep, strong team and took the Class 2A team title.  Aside from Shiltz winning a title at 170 the Panthers also had two Runner-Ups in Seth Maitlen at 195 and Wyatt Thompson at 138.  They finished with 90.5 team points and edged out Clarion-Goldfield-Dows by 8 points in the final standings.  Glenwood finished 4th and Atlantic/CAM was 14th.

Prosecutor: Lack of communication allowed suspect to flee

News

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Douglas County’s top prosecutor say a lack of communication among government agencies allowed a 19-year-old man charged with motor vehicle homicide to flee justice. The Omaha World-Herald reports that a week after the Jan. 29 crash on an Omaha street, Eswin Mejia posted $5,000 bail to be freed. Authorities say he then skipped a urine test, and officials now can’t find him.

Mejia was charged Feb. 3rd with motor vehicle homicide and drunken driving in connection with the death of 21-year-old Sarah Root, of Council Bluffs. Root, who had recently graduated from Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln High School, was driving a 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada east on L Street about 2:15 a.m. Jan. 31 when her vehicle was rear-ended by a pickup truck driven by Mejia. Root’s sport utility vehicle was stopped or slowing when it was rear-ended near 33rd and L Streets. Root died later, at the Nebraska Medical Center.

A review of the case by the World-Herald shows Mejia – a Honduras national – was found to be a low risk to flee despite having twice failed to appear in court for other offenses. Federal immigration authorities declined to detain Mejia.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine criticized the case’s handling, saying “there has to be a common-sense communication between the feds and the state.”

No. 4 Baylor women win 14th in a row, 78-41 over Iowa State

Sports

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

WACO, Texas (AP) – Niya Johnson had 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as No. 4 Baylor overwhelmed Iowa State 78-41 on Saturday for its 14th consecutive victory.
Alexis Jones had 18 points for the Big 12-leading Lady Bears (27-1, 14-1 Big 12). Freshman post player Kalani Brown added 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting along with seven rebounds.

Iowa State (13-13, 5-10) shot only 23 percent from the field (14 of 65) and was outrebounded 64-25. The Lady Bears had five players with at least seven rebounds.
Seanna Johnson led the Cyclones with 12 points, and Meredith Burkhall had 10.

Johnson just missed becoming only the second player in Baylor history with a triple-double while playing 26 minutes. The only other Lady Bear to pull off that feat was former All-America post Brittney Griner (five times). Baylor leading scorer Nina Davis was 2-of-9 shooting for six points, 10 under her average.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid has knee replacement surgery

Sports

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid has had knee replacement surgery and will not attend the NFL’s scouting combine in Indianapolis next week. The Chiefs confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday that Reid had the procedure. Reid also had knee replacement surgery last year that caused him to miss the Senior Bowl.

The 58-year-old coach’s absence from Indianapolis should not have much of an effect on the Chiefs’ draft plans. While he offers general manager John Dorsey considerable input into the decision-making, he no longer has final say in personnel like he had in Philadelphia.  This three-day draft begins April 28 in Chicago.

News

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A Waterloo, Nebraska woman has been charged in Iowa with stealing between $22,000 and $222,000. The Daily Nonpareil reports that 44-year-old Beth Beutler was arrested Friday morning in western Iowa and charged with 38 counts of forgery. Authorities say she also faces charges of theft and ongoing criminal activity.

Police say Beutler used a checking machine to withdraw thousands of dollars. The machine allows truck drivers to access funds from across the country by giving a clerk at a truck stop an authorization code to pay for fuel, service or get cash.

Police say Beutler got the authorization codes from McMullen Brothers Trucking in Carter Lake, where her husband works, and used them at Pilot Travel Center in Council Bluffs.

News

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Police in Council Bluffs responded late Saturday morning to a report of an armed subject inside a residence at 3400 3rd Avenue. While they were en route just before 10-a.m., officers were told a caller reported they thought a shot had been fired inside the home.

As officers were establishing a perimeter of the area the residents were exiting the house and quickly taken to safety. The occupants advised officers the armed subject was still inside the residence. Officers then made entry and cleared the house. No one was located inside the residence and no evidence of an intruder or shots fired were discovered.Bluffs Badge

None of the neighbors were able to confirm that any shots were fired or any suspicious subjects were observed around the residence. There are no injuries associated with the call for service, and the residence was turned back over to the homeowners. The neighborhood returned to normal activities.
