Iowa man fatally shot wife and then himself, authorities say

PACKWOOD, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say an ailing man fatally shot himself after killing his wife at their home in southeast Iowa. The Jefferson County attorney’s office said in a news release Tuesday that 79-year-old Franklin Neff had called family and friends Monday, telling them he’d killed his wife, 75-year-old Enola Neff, and was going to shoot himself at their home in Packwood. Arriving deputies found that Enola Neff had died and that Franklin Neff had a head wound likely inflicted by a handgun found next to him. Authorities say he died later Monday.

Deputies discovered a note from Franklin Neff that indicated he and his wife had health issues and that he didn’t want them to be a burden on their family. Packwood is a town of about 200 people in Jefferson County.

JESSIE M. OLESEN, 90, of Audubon, died July 22nd at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services for JESSIE OLESEN will be held 11-a.m. Sat., July 30th, at the 1st Christian Church in Coon Rapids. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family visitation is at 5-p.m. Friday (7/29).

Burial will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon.

JESSIE OLESEN is survived by:

Her son – Dennis Olesen, of Audubon.

Her brother – Maurice (Angie) Long, of Coon Rapids.

Her sisters – Helen Monthei, of Audubon; Joan Strautman, of Carroll; and Ann Long, of Lynchburg, TN.

6 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, other relatives, her brothers-and-sisters-in law, and many friends.

Clarinda man arrested on drug & alcohol charges

Red Oak Police, Tuesday evening, arrested a Clarinda man on drug, alcohol and other charges, following a traffic stop. 36-year old Michael Wayne England, II, was arrested at around 5-p.m. for Driving While Suspended, Unlawful possession of prescription pills, and open container of alcohol as a driver. England was also cited for failure to hold valid insurance. He was brought to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $1,000 cash bond.

Bodycam video shows Iowa football player searched in park

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police have released body camera footage showing a University of Iowa football player being questioned by police who were searching for a robbery suspect. The footage released Tuesday shows an encounter defensive end Faith Ekakitie described in a Facebook post earlier this week. He wrote that he was playing “Pokemon Go” in a public park when he was surrounded by police and searched at gunpoint. Ekakitie said he feared for his life but understood why police did what they did.

In the video, an officer can be heard telling Ekakitie to put his hands up. The officer says, “It’s probably not you, but we’ve got to double check.” Ekakitie tells the officers he’d been playing the popular smartphone game, which sends players to physical locations to “catch” virtual Pokemon characters. After the officers check Ekakitie’s ID, one thanks him for his cooperation.

Telis, Galloway lead the way for New Orleans over I-Cubs

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Tomas Telis homered and singled, driving in four runs and scoring a pair as the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Iowa Cubs 9-5 on Tuesday. Isaac Galloway doubled and singled for New Orleans. Down 1-0, New Orleans batted around in the third inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs, including a two-run single by Telis.

Following the big inning, the Cubs cut into the deficit in the next half-inning when Juan Perez hit a three-run home run. The Zephyrs later added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. In the fifth, Telis hit a two-run home run, while Robert Andino hit an RBI double in the sixth.

New Orleans starter Justin Nicolino (5-4) picked up the win despite allowing five runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. Opposing starter Jake Buchanan (9-6) took the loss after allowing six runs and seven hits over four innings. Perez homered and doubled, driving home three runs and scoring a couple for the Cubs.

Colon sharp, Mets beat Cards 3-1 for doubleheader split

NEW YORK (AP) — Bartolo Colon pitched three-hit ball for seven sharp innings and the New York Mets overcame another home run by Jedd Gyorko to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 Tuesday night for a doubleheader split. Gyorko homered in both ends and has connected seven times in nine games. His two-run shot helped St. Louis win the opener 3-2.

Colon (9-5) struck out eight and walked none. After Gyorko homered in the second and Alberto Rosario doubled in the third, Colon set down 14 of his final 15 batters. Addison Reed worked the eighth and Jeurys Familia closed for his 36th save this year and 52nd in a row during the regular season.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa delegates have helped Hillary Clinton become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president. Thirty Iowa delegates, including seven superdelegates, cast votes Tuesday for Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The votes during a scheduled roll call ensured Clinton became the first woman to be nominated for president of a major U.S. political party.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A crude oil pipeline that will cut across Iowa has received the final federal permit approvals needed to proceed with construction. Documents posted by the Iowa Utilities Board Tuesday show the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved 60 river crossings in Iowa, a decision pipeline opponents hoped to stop.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Powerball jackpot has soared to $422 million thanks to nearly three months without a winner of the big prize. If anyone matches the five balls and red Powerball in Wednesday night’s drawing, it will be the game’s first jackpot winner since May 7. A jackpot winner could opt for a $422 million annuity paid out over 29 years or a $291 million lump sum. The prize would rank as the nation’s 11th largest.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Democratic lawmakers are continuing to challenge Iowa health officials on the effectiveness of the state’s newly privatized Medicaid program. Members of the Senate Human Resources Committee listened to a presentation Tuesday from the Iowa Department of Human Services on newly released performance data on the state’s Medicaid program. The health care program for poor and disabled residents switched to private management on April 1.

REGINA YOUNT, 89, of Greenfield, died Tuesday, July 26th, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle. A Mass of the Resurrection for REGINA YOUNT will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, July 29th, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield, . Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 2-until 8-p.m. Thursday, July 28th, at St. John’s Catholic Church, in Greenfield, where the family will greet friends from 6-until 8-p.m.; Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at St. John’s Catholic Church.

Memorials may be directed to the Regina Yount Memorial Fund, to be established by the family.
