Oakland standoff ends with 1 dead

A standoff between law enforcement and a man who threatened to shoot officers and himself, ended late last night in Oakland, with the man dead. According to multiple media reports, Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a home on Gates Street in Oakland, at around 7:45-p.m.

The area was blocked-off after a shot was fired from a home toward a deputy. The round reportedly struck a deputies’ cruiser in the bumper. Another shot was fired soon afterward. Authorities tried to make contact with the subject, but after not hearing from him for several hours, sent in a robotic search device, which returned images that revealed the man was dead on the kitchen floor, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other injuries were reported.

The man’s name has not yet been released. Investigators were on the scene through early this (Wednesday) morning.

Storms knock out power, flood streets in eastern Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Thunderstorms have lashed several parts of eastern Nebraska, leaving thousands of people without power and some stranded by street flooding and storm debris. The National Weather Service says an off-duty weather service employee saw a rope tornado briefly touch down around 8 p.m. Tuesday, three miles south-southeast of Kennard in Washington County. No injuries were reported.

The Omaha Public Power District reported that as of 5 a.m. today (Wednesday), nearly 9,700 customers were without power in Douglas and several other counties.
Up to 6 inches of rain was reported near Blair, and street flooding occurred in Omaha, Fremont and other cities.

Across the Missouri River, about 5-miles north/northwest of Council Bluffs, winds gusted from 65- to as much as 96-miles per hour from 9:45-p.m. through 10:15-p.m. Flights into Omaha’s Epply Airfield were diverted to other airports during the peak thunderstorm activity.

ROBERT L. SIMPSON, 81, of Exira, died Sat., Aug. 20th, at the Exira Care Center. Funeral services for ROBERT SIMPSON will be held 2-p.m Thursday, Aug. 25th, at the Kessler Funeral Home, in Exira.

Burial will be in the Exira Cemetery.

ROBERT L. SIMPSON is survived by:

His wife – Judy Simpson, of the Exira Care Center.

His sons – Robert “Ben” Simpson, and Thomas (Kristi) Simpson, all of Exira.

His daughters – Susie Simpson (& fiance’ Kim Black), of Exira, & Sally (Jay) Rajcevich, of Moreno Valley, CA.

His brother – John (Lin) Simpson, of Ft. Dodge,

5 grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Bluffs Police investigate man lying on a street

Police in Council Bluffs responded early this (Wednesday) morning to a report of a person lying on the street in the 3600 block of 2nd Avenue. Upon arrival at around 1-a.m., officers located and identified the person as 26-year old Mark Lear, Jr.  Lear was taken to Creighton University Hospital by rescue squad, for treatment of what initially appeared to be serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Kawasaki’s sac fly leads Iowa to 3-2 win over Memphis

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Munenori Kawasaki hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, driving in Taylor Davis with the go-ahead run, as the Iowa Cubs beat the Memphis Redbirds 3-2 on Tuesday. Davis scored after he reached base on a walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Stephen Bruno hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Redbirds came back to take the lead in the fifth inning when Efren Navarro hit a two-run single. Iowa tied the game 2-2 in the fifth when Bijan Rademacher hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Tommy La Stella.

Jose Rosario (1-0) got the win with a scoreless inning in relief while Corey Littrell (1-4) took the loss in the Pacific Coast League game. Gerardo Concepcion retired the side in order for his first save of the season. Breyvic Valera singled twice, also stealing a base for the Redbirds.

Defending national champion Nebraska picked to win Big Ten

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Defending national champion Nebraska is the unanimous choice of Big Ten coaches to win the conference title in women’s volleyball. National semifinalist and defending Big Ten champion Minnesota is picked to finish second, followed by Wisconsin, Penn State and Illinois. Ohio State is sixth in the poll, followed by Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, Northwestern, Maryland, Iowa, Indiana and Rutgers.

Michigan’s Abby Cole, Nebraska’s Kadie Rolfzen, Penn State’s Haleigh Washington and Wisconsin’s Lauren Carlini are unanimous selections to the coaches’ preseason All-Big Ten team. Other members are Illinois’ Jordyn Poulter, Michigan State’s Chloe Reinig, Minnesota’s Hannah Tapp, Paige Tapp and Samantha Seliger-Swenson, Nebraska’s Amber Rolfzen and Justine Wong-Orantes, Ohio State’s Taylor Sandbothe, Penn State’s Ali Frantti, and Wisconsin’s Haleigh Nelson.
