Game Notes:

  • The Hawkeyes expanded their home-winning streak to 38 consecutive wins, ranking second in the country behind Baylor (57).
  • Redshirt sophomore Kate Martin recorded career-high steals (3) and assists (6), and junior Monika Czinano tied her career-best steals (2).
  • Sophomore Gabbie Marshall set season highs for points (15), assists (3) and tied her season-high steals (3), Czinano tallied nine rebounds for a season-high, and freshman Sharon Goodman tied her career-best rebounds (5).
  • Four Hawkeyes scored in double figures, including junior Monika Czinano (18), freshman Caitlin Clark (23), Marshall (15), and sophomore McKenna Warnock (12).

3 dead in Polk County crash, Saturday morning

Two adults and a child died in a crash early Saturday morning, in Polk County. The Iowa State Patrol reports the crash happened at around 12:50-a.m. on Interstate 80 eastbound, near mile marker 141, near Adventureland. Officials say a 2002 VW Golf driven by 28-year old Gustabo Salcedo, of Des Moines, entered I-80 from the 142 interchange going westbound, in the eastbound lanes.

The car struck a 2021 Freightliner semi tractor head-on. Salcedo, and his passengers, 24-year old Diana Sanchez-Tello, and a one-year old child, both from West Des Moines, died at the scene. The woman and child were not wearing seat belts. The driver of the semi was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

Cass County Supervisors to hold hearing on expenditure funding, re: COVID-19 response

The Cass County Board of Supervisors will meet in-person and electronically via Zoom, beginning at 9-a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9th.  During their session, the Board will hold a Public Hearing concerning the status of expenditure funding the County received for COVID-19 response. According to Auditor Dale Sunderman, the County, working with the Cass County Food Policy Council, SWITA, County Food Pantries, and Public Health, increased its capacity with a food delivery system and food access in Cass County, through an $86,580 Community Development Bloc Grant (CDBG). As of Nov. 16th, $76,086.63 had been expended.

The Board will also hold a Public Hearing on County Ordinance 37: Adoption of Cass County Code – a re-compiling of county ordinances, in accordance with the Code of Iowa. They are also set to receive a report from the Cass County Committee on Aging, and will act on accepting the resignation of a member of the Cass County (elected officers) Compensation Board, followed by the appointment to the Compensation Board member for the remainder of a four-year term ending June 30, 2021.

In other business, the Cass County Supervisors will discuss and/or act on the establishment of Deputy Sheriff classification, and, a Natural Conservation and Wildlife Areas Property Tax Exemption, per Iowa Code. The in-person part of their meeting for a limited number of attendees (including Board members), will be held in the Supervisor’s Board room at the Cass County Courthouse.

Iowa’s Coronavirus dashboard today (10-a.m. Saturday) shows deaths from COVID-19 are up again. The IDPH says 62 more deaths have been reported since 10-a.m. Friday, for a total of 2,665. One more death was reported in each of Cass, Adair, Mills and Union Counties, two more in Pottawattamie County, and three more in Shelby County.  (See data below). One Sioux City, Iowa church has been hit particularly hard. The Sioux City Journal reports that 18 members of Morningside Lutheran Church have died from COVID-19.

Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities report 1,114 deaths, while deaths attributed in-part to preexisting conditions number 1,363. There are 2,371 new Positive cases of COVID-19 statewide, for a total of 242,0621. Long-Term Care facility outbreaks are up slightly, to 137. There are 5,275 positive cases and 2,316 recoveries reported within those facilities.

Health department data shows 75 of Iowa’s 99 counties report a 14-day positivity rate at 15% or greater. That’s down from 78 the previous day. Kossuth County reports a 14-day positivity rate of 30.3%.

Hospitalizations statewide fell from 1,000 Friday to 960 today. Health officials say 204 COVID patients are in an ICU, 131 were admitted, and 117 patients are on a ventilator. Hospitals in southwest/western Iowa (RMCC Region 4) report: 56 hospitalized; 19 are in an ICU; 4 were admitted, and 7 COVID patients are on a ventilator.

Iowans who have recovered from the virus number 157,028, while 1,243,596 have been tested, to-date. The State’s positivity rate is down to 16.5%. Cass County’s positivity rate has declined to 15.7%.

Berhow, Carter lead Northern Iowa past St. Ambrose 98-53

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Trae Berhow scored 19 points as Northern Iowa easily beat St. Ambrose 98-53. Noah Carter added 17 points while Bowen Born chipped in 16 for Northern Iowa. James Betz had 14 points. Berhow shot 4 for 6 from beyond the arc and grabbed six rebounds. John Kerr had 10 rebounds for the Fighting Bees.

LORAN SPORRER, 59, of Manning, died Friday, Dec. 4th, at his home near Manning. A Mass of Christian Burial for LORAN SPORRER will be held 10:30-a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19th, at the Sacred Heart Church, in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until service time at church.

The Atlantic-CAM wrestling team is off to a great start to the season. A night after taking down Underwood in a dual, the Trojans have won the Joe Fitch Invitational at Humboldt. Atlantic notched 236 points to edge out South O’Brien by 2 points.
