Iowa forces 7 turnovers, rolls past Maryland

Sports

October 1st, 2021 by admin

The Iowa Hawkeyes forced seven Maryland turnovers and raced away for a 51-14 victory over the Terrapins on Friday night. The Iowa defense picked off five of Taulia Tagovailoa’s passes, recovered an early fumble deep in Maryland territory, and grabbed another pick near the end of the game.

Iowa outscored the Terrapins 31-0 in the second quarter to run away with the win. Spencer Petras threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more. The Iowa defense has now racked up 12 interceptions on the season, no other Big Ten team has more than 5. A big momentum shift in the game came when Maryland receiver Dontay Demus went down with a leg injury and fumbled on a kickoff return. He injured his knee during the play and had to leave on a cart. Iowa capitalized on that turnover and push the lead to 17-7 and never looked back.

Iowa Quarterback Spencer Petras finished the game 21-30 for 259 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for two scores in the contest as Iowa improved to 5-0 on the season.

Next up the Hawkeyes prepare for a big showdown with Penn State at Kinnick Stadium on October 9th. That kickoff has been set for 3:00 p.m. and we’ll have coverage on the Hawkeye Radio Network starting at 1:00 p.m. next Saturday.

Harlan cruises past Atlantic 55-7

Sports

The Harlan Cyclones showed why they are every bit the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A with a 55-7 victory over Atlantic at the Trojan Bowl on Friday night. The Cyclones didn’t waste any time grabbing an early lead. They started out by forcing an Atlantic punt on the first possession and then struck on their first offensive play. Teagon Kasperbauer threw a 57-yard strike down the seam to Aiden Hall for the first score.

The Cyclones would add three more touchdowns in the first quarter while only running four offensive plays. Kasperbauer hooked up with Connor Frame for a 23 yard touchdown and Hall ran one in from 35 yards out. Joey Moser would add to the scoring with a 50-yard punt return touchdown to give the Cyclones a 28-0 lead by the end of the first. The Cyclones would grab three more scores in the second to push the lead to 49-0 by half. The running clock rule melted away the second half quickly.

Kasperbauer finished 4 of 4 passing for 162 yards and three touchdowns. William Arkfeld played the second half and went 4-8 for 105 yards and a score. Hall led the charge on the ground with 81 yards and two scores to go along with the 57 yard receiving TD.

Atlantic got their lone score in the final period as Caden Andersen hooked up with Gannon O’Hara for a 73 yard touchdown pass. Andersen finished 4-11 for 98 yards and the one score. The Cyclones outgained the Trojans 416-148 on the night.

Harlan improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 3A District 6. Next up for the Cyclones is a trip to ADM. Atlantic falls to 1-5 on the season overall and 0-2 in the district. The Trojans now prep for a Homecoming contest against Knoxville next week.
