Ag/Outdoor, News

May 2nd, 2024 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic, Iowa) – Cass County Conservation Interpretive Naturalist Lora Kanning say the Conservation Department’s 30th Pioneer Skills Festival takes place this Saturday afternoon (May 4th). Kanning says they still need help in the barn, so if you’re interested in volunteering by leading a pioneer station, email Lora Kanning at lkanning@casscoia.us. They would love to have help from 12:30-until 4 pm, as the festival runs from 1-4pm.

Kanning said also, the Cass County portion of the T-bone trail is CLOSED. DO NOT go around any barriers, please turn around. The Construction contractor is repairing bridge approaches in Cass county. The project is taking longer due to the weather. This weekend there may be sections of the trail open and others may have barriers. Kanning says they hope to be finished with the project next week!

On Thursday May 9th , the Cass County Conservation Department will host a 5th grade field trip and conservation day. They are asking for volunteers to help the 5th graders fish at Cold Springs park from 9am-2pm. If you are available that day to help, email Lora Kanning. That email again is lkanning@casscoia.us .

Lastly, Kanning reports summer camps still have a couple open spots. Fliers went out in the Department’s last newsletter! It can also be found on the Conservation Department’s website https://www.casscountyia.gov/county-departments/conservation-office/

Details on upcoming events and projects happening from May into June will be released in the next few weeks.

Emails detail evidence gathering in IA online sports betting case

News

May 2nd, 2024 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa [WHO-TV] — Newly obtained emails between investigators within the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations are shedding more light into why and how agents gathered evidence against student athletes at Iowa and Iowa State Universities in the online sports betting case. WHO-TV reports agents used geo-fence technology already employed by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to track all cell phone activity on both campuses. The evidence led to criminal charges and/or NCAA suspensions for 26 students; most pled guilty to underage gambling as part of plea deals. In March, the state dropped all charges against the five remaining defendants who pleaded not guilty; all 26 individuals are now suing the state.

According to internal emails provided by the Sandy Law Firm, Van Plumb and Matthew Boles who are representing the plaintiffs, DCI agents believed state code permitted them to use the software program Kibana, which is used by the Racing and Gaming Commission to track online sports betting, to cast a broad net to identify who was placing wagers.

An email exchange on September 15, 2022 from Story County prosecutor Tyler Grimm to DCI special agent Chris Swigart details Grimm explaining the need to obtain a warrant to obtain certain information they were after. No warrant was issued and the geo-fences were initiated. But communications also show agents knew their methods would be questioned.

Emails were obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and provided to WHO 13 by the attorneys representing the 26 plaintiffs from the Sandy Law Firm, attorney Van Plumb, and attorney Matthew Boles. GeoComply has publicly stated the way DCI agents used their software, Kibana, in this case was inappropriate.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission stated last August that the investigation did not reveal evidence of point shaving.

URBANDALE, Iowa (KCCI) – A trucker was watching Netflix when he crashed into a car, killing a couple from Urbandale, prosecutors said. KCCI reports Matthew and Cimberly Hansen, of Urbandale, died in the crash in southern Minnesota in August 2023.

Prosecutors said the truck driver, Billy Grimes, was watching a show on his phone while going nearly 70 mph when he approached a construction zone. Grimes, who has denied using his phone while driving, is facing two counts of vehicular homicide

Hawkeyes Fall to NDSU

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa’s baseball team lost to North Dakota State, 21-14, on Wednesday night at Duane Banks Field.
“The message is you can’t just walk out of the locker room and think that is okay”, said head coach Rick Heller. “It’s not okay, not at all. The pitching tonight was as bad as I have seen. When you combine 20 hits with the free bases, you don’t give yourself a chance to comeback.”
The Bison got the game started with a first inning grand slam; they added two more runs in the top half of the first to extend their lead to six.
Iowa responded with a two-run home run from Reese Moore in the bottom half. His second home run in as many days. NDSU got the two runs back in the top of the third to make the game 8-2.
The Hawkeyes cut the Bison lead in half in the third with a two-RBI double down the right field line from Davis Cop. Iowa continued to chip away with back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the fourth.
NDSU would plate a pair of runs in the fifth to push the lead back to four, before Iowa got two back in the bottom half. A pair of home runs in the sixth for the Bison made it 14-8.
A five-run fifth and a two-run seventh once again broke it open for NDSU. An Andy Nelson grand slam in the seventh cut the deficit to four. The Bison would score four more runs in the eighth and the ninth with Iowa scoring once in the eighth.
“The difference tonight was that they did so much damage when they got runners on,” said Heller. “We had those opportunities and didn’t get the hit that would have kept us scoring with them.”
Four Hawkeyes had multi-RBI games: Nelson had four, Davis Cop and Cade Moss each had three, and Moore had two.
Reese Bueter started on the mound for Iowa and threw 2/3 of an inning. He was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on four hits. Nine other pitchers saw action for Iowa with the Hawkeye arms allowing 10 walks while only striking out four.
“Tip your hat to NDSU,” said Heller. “They pounded the ball, and they had a great night. The bottom part of their order torched us. Up-and-down the lineup they were on the barrel all night long.”
The Hawkeyes return to action on Friday at Duane Banks Field for the first game of a three-game series with Northwestern at 6:05 p.m. (CT).

Ralston Shuts Down Drake; ISU Wins, 9-8

DES MOINES, Iowa – In a back-and-forth game in the state’s capital, Iowa State (19-28) defeated in-state foe Drake (21-24) at Buel Field on Wednesday afternoon in a wet, damp afternoon affair.

The Cyclones looked like they were going to run away with things early, plating five first-inning runs as the first five batters all reached – four of them via doubles. Drake snatched all the momentum back in the fourth, using its highest single-inning output of the season to plate eight and take the lead. A three-run ISU bomb in the fifth tied things up before a Milaysia Ochoa run on a wild pitch sealed the deal in the sixth.

Both Ochoa and Tatum Johnson had two hits on the day, while Ashly Minor drew a pair of free passes. Carli Spelhaug had a team-high three RBI – all coming on her seventh homer of the season in the fifth – while Angelina Allen, Alesia Ranches, Johnson and Tiana Poole all tallied one RBI.

Four Cyclones saw action in the circle, with Tatum Johnson getting the start. Johnson allowed two pitched three innings before being relieved by Aziza Rodriguez. After Rodriguez came Karlie Charles (4-7) who went for 1.2 innings. Charles gave up one run on two hits before Jaiden Ralston (3) closed things down. Ralston, who picked up the save, fanned four of her six batters faced and locked down the Bulldog bats.

Drake’s Frankie Rita had a game-high three hits on the day while Aby Martin had three RBI and Skylar Rigby had three walks drawn. Destiny Lewis and Carey Koenig also had multi-hit games for the Bulldogs as Drake outhit the Cyclones on the night, 10-7.

Drake used three pitchers on the evening, as Emma Richards (1-1) was the pitcher of record. Richards tossed 1.2 frames and allowed one run on a wild pitch. Emma Dighton pitched the seventh, allowing no hits in her three batters faced, securing a strikeout.

How it Happened

Iowa State came out of the gates swinging, rattling off three straight doubles, courtesy of Ochoa, Allen and Ranches, to start the game and going up 2-0. Following a Minor walk, Tatum Johnson picked up where Ranches left off, doubling to right center and plating a third run of the inning and advancing Minor to third. Ashley would then score on a wild pitch with Johnson moving to third before a Tiana Poole groundout brought in a fifth and final run.

The next two frames went scoreless, as neither team was able to bring runs in. The Bulldogs were able to put two aboard in the third, gathering their first hits  of the game, but stranded them both as the game turned to the fourth.

After holding the Cyclone bats in check again, Drake exploded for its most productive inning of the season, plating eight runs and taking an 8-5 lead. The innings featured four homers form the Bulldogs, two of which came from Carey Koenig who led the frame off with a long ball before coming back around and doing it again. All eight of the Bulldog runs would come in the fourth.

In the fifth, ISU came right back swinging. Minor drew her second walk of the game and a Tiana Poole single put runners on first and second. Then, stepping up to the plate with one out and two on, Spelhaug clobbered a ball into left center to knot the game up at eight apiece.

After holding Drake to just a hit in the fifth, Iowa State notched the game-winning run in the sixth thanks to some heads-up baserunning. An Ochoa single and Allen walk put runners on first and second. Both were able to advance on a wild pitch and then an at-bat later, did so again with Ochoa coming home on the second passed ball of the inning.

Jaiden Ralston would enter for the Cyclones in the bottom of the sixth and completely shut down the Bulldogs. Ralston rung up the side in the sixth and tacked on one more K in the seventh as she collected her third save of the season as ISU hit win number 19.

On Deck

Iowa State will be back in action this weekend, when it welcomes UCF to the Cyclone Sports Complex for the regular season series finale. The Cyclones and Knights will wrap Big 12 play playing a three-game set with action beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. All weekend action will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
