August 1st, 2011 by Ric Hanson

No injuries were reported after a car and pickup truck collided Friday afternoon, in Atlantic. The Police Department says a car driven by Paula Goettsche, of Atlantic, rear-ended a pickup driven by Jerry McCrory, of Atlantic, at the intersection of 7th Street and Hospital Drive.

Officials say McCrory was stopped at the intersection headed eastbound. Goettsches’ vehicle was behind him, and proceeded to move forward while McCrory was still stopped. Her car hit a lowered tailgate on the pickup, causing about $2,300 damage altogether. Goettsche was cited by police for Failure to Maintain Control. The accident happened at around 12:45-p.m.

And, an Atlantic man was arrested Sunday on a Cass County warrant. 23-year old Casey Sampson, Jr, was taken into custody on a warrant for Willful Injury. He was booked into the Cass County and held pending a court appearance.

St. Albert Invited to Join Hawkeye 10 Conference

St. Albert High School in Council Bluffs has been invited by conference officials to join the Hawkeye Ten.  Harlan Activities Director Mitch Osborn, who also serves as president of the Hawkeye Ten Conference says they have been discussing the possibility since last winter trying to be proactive.  Osborn says St. Albert already competes with most of the Hawkeye 10 Schools with the exception of football.  The consensus is that scheduling and developing more rivilaries would be a benefit to the conference. If St. Albert decides to join the conference, their constitution would allow that to happen in 2013, possibly a year earlier under certain conditions.  St. Albert school officials will vote on the proposal in September.

Children hurt when SUV enters ditch

News

August 1st, 2011 by Ric Hanson

Two children were hurt Friday afternoon, when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into an embankment near Red Oak. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident happened at around 3:45-p.m. on Highway 34, at the intersection with L Avenue.

Officials say 75-year old Keith Wayne Rhone, of Rockwall, TX, was driving a 2001 Chevy Suburban eastbound on Highway 34, when he fell asleep at the wheel. The SUV and a travel trailer it was pulling, crossed the westbound lane of traffic and entered the north ditch. The vehicle traveled about 400-feet before hitting an embankment and coming to rest.

Two, unidentified children in the SUV suffered minor injuries, and were transported by Red Oak Rescue to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for treatment. The suburban was a total loss, while the travel trailer sustained about $500 damage.

Kansas City Chiefs Notes/Signings

Sports

August 1st, 2011 by Jim Field

  • Chiefs fans may want to wish for good health to quarterback Matt Cassel.  The pro bowl QB has only two back-up quarterbacks behind him at camp and they have completed all of four NFL passes between them.  Last year’s back-up, Brodie Croyle, has not been re-signed, that leaves Tyler Palko and Ricky Stanzi.  Palko is a lefty who was the third stringer last year for Kansas City and has four career completions.  Stanzi is a rookie out of Iowa who hit 221 of 345 passes for 3,004 yards and 25 touchdowns for the Hawkeyes as a senior.
  • The Chiefs have signed defensive end Wallace Gilberry to his restricted free agent tender.  The 6-foot-2, 268 pound Gilberry has played in 37 regular season games with 34 solo tackles and 11 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pair of recoveries.
  • Kansas City has signed first round draft pick Jonathan Baldwin out of Pittsburgh.  The 26th overall pick played 39 games for Pitt, catching 128 passes for 2,337 yards and 16 touchdowns.  The big, athletic receiver had 53 receptions for 822 yards and five TD’s as a senior.
  • Also, the Chiefs released tight end Brad Cottam and placed second year tight end Tony Moeaki on the physically unable to perform list.  Coach Todd Haley wouldn’t say what Moeaki’s issue was.  In his rookie season, the former Iowa Hawkeye standout caught 47 passes for 556 yards and three touchdowns.  If he is still on the PUP list when the season opens, he will have to remain there for another six weeks.  During the pre-season, he can be reinstated at any time.
