A Union County man who was charged in August with more than 40 counts of sexual abuse,  has pleaded guilty to at least one of the counts. KCCI says court records show 42-year-old Ryan Kissell, of Creston, was sentenced to 10-years in prison, following his plea of guilty to at least one count of lascivious acts with a child.  Kissel also has to register as a sex offender and pay restitution to his victim.

Greenfield police officers and Adair County sheriff’s deputies arrested Kissel on Aug. 16th at Nodaway Valley High School, where he was a special education teacher and head football coach. Investigators say Kissell abused a child for a decade. He was initially charged with 24 counts of various lascivious acts with a child, 21 counts of second-degree sexual abuse and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Kissell was hired in May as a special education teacher for Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield and head football coach of Nodaway Valley/Orient-Macksburg, according to the district’s school board minutes from May 10. He’s listed as a resource staffer on the Nodaway Valley High School staff directory. He previously taught and coached multiple sports in the Creston Community School District, including high school girls soccer and middle school football.

The latest Iowa Climate Statement signed by more than 200 scientists and researchers at Iowa colleges and universities says the state needs to invest more in solar power. Retired Iowa State University climate scientist Gene Takle says when wind is paired with solar, they tend to make up for each other’s weaknesses.

Around 60 percent of electricity generated in Iowa comes from wind. University of Iowa environmental health professor Peter Thorne says solar could potentially overtake wind.

Several large-scale solar projects are under development, including a 200 mega-watt solar farm in Linn County at the former Duane Arnold nuclear plant. Iowa’s electric wind production is higher share than any other state, but Iowa solar energy capacity is well below the national average.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says defensive tackle Noah Shannon has been cleared to returned to practice but is not sure when he will return to action. Shannon had been suspended for the season as part of a gambling investigation but may eventually return as the NCAA reworks its rules regarding wagering.

Ferentz is not sure how long it will take to get Shannon game ready.

Under Ferentz Iowa has had a history of winning ugly and defying the stats and this season has been no different. The Hawkeyes are 5-1 despite ranking last in the conference in total offense and 11th in total defense.

Ferentz says under first-year coach Luke Fickell the Wisconsin offense has changed but the results have not. The Badgers are averaging nearly 204 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Deacon Hill made his first start in a 20-14 win over Purdue and finished six-of-21 for 110 yards. He missed badly on several throws.

Hill’s second start will be at Wisconsin, where he played before transferring to Iowa.

Wheelers looking to secure home field advantage

Sports

October 10th, 2023 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers have been one of the most dominant and consistent teams in all of high school football.  The Wheelers have proven they can win with not only high-powered offense where they average 42 points per game and have scored 60+ points three different times, but they have shown they can put teams away with tough physical defense. The Wheelers have won two different one score games this year and have shown that they can compete and beat any team on any given Friday night. The Wheelers were able to have both sides of the ball last Friday night at Collins Maxwell where they defeated the Spartans 68-18. It was just 8-6 in favor of the Wheelers in the first quarter and the Spartans were able to keep close and competitive through the first half. The Wheelers took completely over in the third quarter where they won the quarter 34-0 and coach Sean Birks said the Wheelers were able to capitalize on getting short field.

The Wheelers wrapped up a district championship with the victory and were able to get all of their guys in the game to be a part of celebrating a season long goal.

The Wheelers are happy to have accomplished a long tough goal, but Coach Birks said his team is not satisfied and want to have home field through the playoffs with a win this week when they play the 5-2 Baxter Bolts.

The Wheeler defense will have their hands full with the Bolts quarterback Perrin Sulzle who comes in on the season with big numbers of 29 touchdown passes to just 4 interceptions and 1,979 passing yards. Coach Birks said the defense has to be solid and keep the Bolts guessing.

The Audubon Wheelers will secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win Friday night on the road at 5-2 Baxter in a highly anticipated football game. You can hear the full interview with Coach Birks below.

Iowa AG leading effort against Massachusetts pork law

Ag/Outdoor, News

October 10th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa’s Attorney General is leading a 13 state coalition opposing a new Massachusetts law that puts restrictions on the sale of pork based on how the animals are raised. A statement from Attorney General Brenna Bird’s office says the Massachusetts law goes even further than a similar California law.

Shipments of non-compliant pork into the state would be banned even pork meets all Iowa and federal safety and quality standards.

A-G Bird’s statement says these strict new mandates will create extreme costs and regulations to compete in the industry, forcing many family hog farms to close shop.
