Page County man arrested Sunday, in Red Oak

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Police in Red Oak report a man from Page County was arrested Sunday afternoon. Authorities say 21-year-old Jordan Chase Shum, of Yorktown, was arrested for Harassment in the 3rd Degree. He  was taken into custody in the 100 block of W. Coolbaugh Street at around 2:15-p.m. and held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $300 bond.

Iowa State women beat UNC-Wilmington

Freshman Addy Brown scored 24 points and added 10 assists as the Cyclones beat UNC-Wilmington 85-58. Brown was nine-of-14 from the floor.

The Cyclones finished 17-of-21 from the line.

The Cyclones improve to 4-3 on the season.

Iowa State to Face Memphis in Autozone Liberty Bowl

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State football team (7-5, 6-3 Big 12) has accepted an invitation to play in the 65th AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee. It will be the sixth bowl game in the last seven seasons and the 18th bowl appearance in school history.

Iowa State will face Memphis (9-3, 6-2 AAC) on Friday, Dec. 29 at 2:30 p.m. CT at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. ESPN will broadcast the game. Iowa State is 1-0 all time against Memphis, defeating the Tigers, 21-20, in the 2017 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. 

Iowa State tied for fourth place in the Big 12 Conference after earning six victories against league foes. It marks just the third time in school history that the Cyclones have won six league games, all of which have come under Matt Campbell’s direction.

This will be ISU’s fourth appearance in the Liberty Bowl. The Cyclones are 1-2 in the bowl: 1972 lost to Georgia Tech, 31-30; 2012 lost to Tulsa, 31-17; 2017 defeated Memphis, 21-20. 

Iowa State has a 5-12 all-time record in bowl games. Eighth-year head coach Matt Campbell has the most bowl appearances among ISU skippers as the Cyclones head to their sixth bowl game of his tenure.

Iowa to Meet Tennessee in Cheez-It Citrus Bowl

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 17th-ranked University of Iowa football team will face No. 21 Tennessee in the 2024 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Florida. Kickoff is set for noon (CT) from Camping World Stadium and the game will be televised on ABC.

CHEEZ-IT CITRUS BOWL TICKET INFORMATION
The Iowa Athletics Ticket Office will accept Citrus Bowl ticket requests from Monday, Dec. 4 through noon on Sunday, Dec. 10 from football season ticket holders, I-Club members, and University of Iowa Alumni. Fans are encouraged to monitor their email inbox for ordering information and visit Bowl Central for updated information. If tickets remain after the priority process, they will be made available for the public on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

IOWA IN POSTSEASON; AT THE CITRUS BOWL
The Hawkeyes will be making their 36th bowl game appearance and their third Citrus Bowl appearance (formerly the Capital One Bowl).

Iowa is 1-1 all-time at the Citrus Bowl. The Hawkeyes defeated No. 11 LSU, 30-25, on an improbable Drew Tate-to-Warren Holloway 56-yard touchdown pass as time expired on Jan. 1, 2005. Kentucky scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarter to edge Iowa, 20-17, on Jan. 1, 2022.

The Hawkeyes have won four of their last five bowl games, including a 21-0 shutout of Kentucky in the 2022 Music City Bowl. Iowa is 18-16-1 all-time in bowl games.

IOWA VS. TENNESSEE
The Hawkeyes are 1-2 against the Volunteers in program history. Tennessee won the only bowl meeting, winning 45-28 in the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville.

Iowa won the first ever meeting in 1982, winning 28-22 in Atlanta and the Volunteers were victorious, 23-22, in East Rutherford, New Jersey in 1987,

Iowa is 7-6 all-time in bowl games against current Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponents. This marks the fourth time in five seasons Iowa will play a school from the SEC in a bowl game.

IOWA IN 2023
The Hawkeyes went 4-0 in the month of November to finish with 10 regular season wins and a 7-2 Big Ten record en route to the Big Ten West Division title. The West Division title is the third in program history and it is the eighth 10-win season under head coach Kirk Ferentz.

Junior Cooper DeJean was selected as the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year and the Rodgers-Dwight Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year, while senior Tory Taylor was recognized as the Eddleman-Fields Big Ten Punter of the Year. The Odebolt, Iowa, native is also a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and Bronko Nagurski Award and was a semifinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy.

DeJean is the sixth Hawkeye to be voted the top defensive back in the Big Ten and the third player to earn the league’s top returner honor. Taylor earns the top punter honor for the second time in his career (2020). He is the first punter in league history to earn the distinction more than once.

Iowa had 20 players earn All-Big Ten recognition, including first-team honorees Jay Higgins (linebacker), DeJean (defensive back, return specialist) and Taylor (punter).  Sebastian Castro (defensive back) garnered second-team honors, while Joe Evans (defensive end), Nick Jackson (linebacker), Drew Stevens (placekicker), Logan Jones (center), Connor Colby (guard) and Nick DeJong (guard) were third-team honorees.

The Hawkeyes are bowl eligible for the 22nd time in the last 23 seasons under head coach Kirk Ferentz. Iowa is 10-9 in bowl games under Ferentz, including a 21-0 victory over Kentucky in the Music City Bowl. Since 2001, only Ohio State and Wisconsin have won more bowl games (including the FBS championship game), than Iowa.

PHYLLIS PIERCE, 78, of Atlantic, died Sunday, December 3, 2023, at Atlantic Specialty Care. Funeral services for PHYLLIS PIERCE will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 8th at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 7th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Atlantic City Council to act on approving AMU’s Budget, Board of Adjustment appointment & swearing in of a new Police Officer

[Updated 12/4] (Atlantic, Iowa) – The City Council in Atlantic will hold one of their two, regular monthly meetings 5:30-p.m., Wednesday, in their Chambers and City Hall. Among the action items on their agenda, is the swearing-in by Mayor Grace Garrett, of Atlantic Police Officer, Nicholas Whipple. Whipple is a Bedford High School graduate and a certified police officer in the State of Iowa. He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and joined the Iowa National Guard in 2022. He completed his IANG Basic & AIT Training, in Oct. 2023.

The Council is expected to pass a Resolution approving the Calendar Year (CY) 2024 Budget for Atlantic Municipal Utilities. Their action is essentially an acknowledgement of the AMU Board having passed their Budget. The budget shows 2024 Total Revenues & Financing Sources in excess of of $19.2-million, and Total Expenditures & Transfers Out amounting to nearly $18.4-million. AMU General Manager Steve Tjepkes and Comptroller Jennifer Saathoff will be present during the City Council’s meeting to answer any questions.

In other business, the Council will hear an Annual Report from Michelle Andersen, Director of the Atlantic Public Library. They’ll act also, on Orders to:

  • Appoint Emily Kringel to the Board of Adjustment. Kringle will replace Alexis Fleener, who has moved out-of-State and formally resigned from the Board. The Board of Adjustment reviews appeals of the City’s Zoning and Sign Ordinance. The Board meets as needed, on the second Monday of the month, at 5:30-p.m.
  • Authorizing Snyder & Associates Engineers to proceed with the design and bidding process for the Atlantic Splash Pad Project. Splashpad Committee representatives met on Nov. 2nd with the City’s Personnel & Finance Committee, which considered a request for the City of proceed with the design and bidding for the project. During a follow-up meeting on Nov. 13th, the Committee unanimously to recommend the Council authorize Snyder’s to proceed with the design & bidding process for the Splash Pad Project.

The Atlantic City Council move to act on a Resolution “Closing the Inclusive Playground Fund and transferring the fund balance ($45,000) to the Splash Pad Fund,” as well as the Third and Final Reading of an Ordinance Amending the City Code, with regard to City Administrator Duties, followed by an “Order to Approve an Administrative Assistance Contract Addendum for [a CDBG (Community Development Block Grant)] contract,” with regard to the “Weresh Upper Story” project. The Amendment states SWIPCO (the Southwest Iowa Planning Council, in Atlantic) “Shall maintain all pertinent records for the greater of three-years after the date the recipient is notified that the State CDBG contract has been closed with HUD (Housing and Urban Development).”

At the conclusion of regular business, the Atlantic City Council will enter into a closed session to discuss with legal counsel, matters currently in, or likely to enter, litigation.

Drake Women’s Basketball Can’t Come Through in Loss to Minnesota in Second Overtime

(Minneapolis, MN) – The Drake women’s basketball team fell in two overtimes to the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Drake tried to hold on in their loss but they were not able to come further in the game as they fell 94-88.

Drake was led in the game by Katie Dinnebier who scored 30 points in the game with five assists and three steals. Dinnebier scored her career-best in the game and kept Darke in the game to bring it to overtime. Behind her was Anna Miller as she knocked in 17 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Grace Berg knocked in 12 points and six assists while Taylor McAulay earned 11 points and two rebounds. Courtney Becker earned 10 points to finish off double-digit scoring.

On the opposite side, Minnesota was led by Mara Braun with 33 points and four rebounds with four assists to lead overall in the competition. Mallory Heyer was able to knock in 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Grace Grocholski and Sophie Hart each earned 12 points while combining for 14 rebounds. Amaya Battle also earned 11 points in the game to finish off double-digit scoring.

Drake leads the series with Minnesota 10-7 overall, but are now 0-3 in their last three overtime contests. The Bulldogs are now 5-3 overall and are 1-2 on the road overall. Head coach Allison Pohlman said after the game, “I think we did everything that we could have done from a tactical standpoint. We had so many players step up and make big plays. We will take what we need out of this and look forward to Friday.”

The Bulldogs will take on North Dakota State this upcoming Friday, December 8th at 11:00 a.m. at home.

Montgomery County Supervisors to discuss YouTube meetings; Cass Co. Supervisors to act on elected officials’ compensation

(Red Oak, Iowa) – The Board of Supervisors in Montgomery County**, Tuesday (Dec. 5), will hold a regular session in their Red Oak Courthouse Board Room, beginning at 8:30-a.m.  In addition to a Secondary Roads Department update from Engineer Karen Albert, the Board will discuss “Board of Supervisors Regular meetings available on the streaming platform YouTube,” with action as necessary.

The Cass County Board of Supervisors*** meeting takes place at 9-a.m., Tuesday, in their Atlantic, Courthouse Board Room. On their agenda is a presentation by Ryan Berven, with Assured Partners, with regard to health insurance year-to-date claims, ISAC rates for July, and Wellness.

The Cass County Supervisors will also act on passing a Resolution “Setting compensation for elected officials for Fiscal Year 2024 as previously approved by [a] voice vote on March 21, 2023.” During that meeting, Supervisor Steve Green moved and Supervisor Bernard Pettinger seconded, a motion to reduce the compensation board’s recommendation of 10% for elected officials and 13.5% for the sheriff by 40% to 6% for elected officials and 8.1% for the sheriff. The motion passed by a vote of 4-to-1, with Supervisors Wendy Richter opposed.

The Board will hear a regular, weekly report from County Engineer Trent Wolken, and a report from Cass County General Relief/Mental Health Coordinator Debbie Schuler, for the months of October and November.  Following their regular meeting, the Cass Supervisors will conduct a Budget Workshop session with Department Head, to plan for the FY 202402025 Budget. The work session begins at 10:30-a.m., Tuesday, also in the Supervisor’s Board Room.

Huskers Flow in Second Half to Beat Georgia Tech

(Lincoln, NE) – Nebraska was down 32-22 at the half and rolled out in the third quarter to score over double with 33 points alone as they ended up winning 80-72 in the second half. Nebraska went 13-15 in the third quarter and took a 55-54 lead in the fourth quarter. That was one of the largest comebacks for the Huskers in program history.

Nebraska was led in the game by Jaz Shelly with 22 points and eight assists. Shelly scored her 1,000 career points in the game against the Yellow Jackets as she now is in the top five in Husker history with three-pointers made. She also has moved up to the top ten in Nebraska in career assists. Alexis Markowski earned a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as she was followed up by Natalie Potts with 13 points and four rebounds. Logan Nissley followed up in scoring with a total of 11 points to finish off the Huskers in double-digits.

Nebraska’s 58 second-half points were tied for the 10th most in the second half in school history. The Golden Jackets were led by Kara Dunn with 22 points while Tonie Morgan also added 20 points and five rebounds. Noguero threw down 11 points to finish off double-digit scoring.

Georgia Tech would have been able to stay in the game if they hit the threes, but shot just 30% from the three-point line. Nebraska went 67% in the second half from the field while shooting 39% from the perimeter in the game.

Nebraska hosts UNC Wilmington this upcoming Tuesday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m.

#4 Iowa Runs Over Bowling Green 99-65

(Iowa City, IA) – The Hawkeyes rolled on over the Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday 99-65. Iowa is now 14-6 over teams in the MAC and 1-0 against Bowling Green.

Looking at the stats for the Hawkeyes, Caitlin Clark led the team with 24 points and dished out 11 assists for a double-double while also pulling down seven rebounds. Clark is just two double-doubles away from reaching the Big Ten’s list for the most double-doubles in a career with 46. Behind Clark was Kate Martin with 17 points and five rebounds while Sydney Affolter had 14 points and four rebounds. Sharon Goodman scored 12 points on Saturday and 11 rebounds for her to earn a double-double. She has now played in 133 games in her career. Iowa shot more than well as they shot 67% from the field while outrebounding Bowling Green 44-27.

Bowling Green was led in the game by Lexi Fleming as she knocked in 24 points and seven rebounds. Amy Velasco scored 11 points while pulling down three rebounds. Morgan Sharps and Sophie Dziekan each scored nine points and three rebounds each. Bowling Green could not get past the Iowa defense as they shot just 34.3% from the field.

Iowa will move on to Iowa State to take on the Cyclones as a part of the Cy-Hawk series this upcoming Wednesday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. in Ames.
