Audubon & Griswold School Board to hold separate meetings, Monday

At least two area school district boards of education will hold their regular monthly meetings, Monday evening (Feb. 21st). In Griswold, the School Board meeting gets underway at 5:30-p.m. in the Conference Room at the High School. New Business on their agenda includes (but is not limited to…), considering and possible approval of:

  • Auditor bids for Fiscal Years 2023,2024, & 2025 (Decision Required [D.R.])
  • E-Rate Application [D.R.]
  • Chemical Application, Middle School Gym, and Baseball Field Maintenance bids. [D.R.]
  • Mowing Specifications [D.R.]
  • An adjustment to Substitute Pay (Information only, or [D.R.])

The Griswold School Board will then consider/act on entering into a Closed Session for strategy negotiations with the Certified Bargaining Unit.

In Audubon, the District School Board meets at 7-p.m., Monday, in the High School Board Room. Action items on their agenda include:

  • Naming the Audubon Education Association as the Official Bargaining Unit for Teachers.
  • Setting the time and dates for: Public Bargaining Meeting (Board opening proposal), & a hearing on the School Calendar.
  • The Board will also act on approving an agreement with Advantage Administrators, re: Early Retirement HRA.
  • Act on approving the second reading of policies (105, 200.1, 210.8, 212, 212.1, 401.4, 502.4 & 606.6)
  • Rescinding Policy 307,
  • and they will act on any Personnel matters to come before the Board (Resignations, Contracts, etc.)

The Audubon School Board is expected to receive an Open Bargaining Proposal from the Audubon Education Association, prior to hearing regular monthly reports from the Superintendent, Principals and with regard to Transportation.

 

Woman faces assault charge in Shenandoah

(Shenandoah, Iowa) — Police responding to an altercation early Saturday morning, in Shenandoah, arrested a woman on a assault charge. Shenandoah Police Department were called to the 1100 block of West Lowell at around 6-a.m., and upon further investigation, officers arrested 26-year old Taylor Dawn Fleming, of Shenandoah, for Domestic Assault/1st offense.

Fleming was transported to the Page County Jail and was being held without bond.

Our 24-hour high in Atlantic (7-a.m. Saturday until 7-a.m. Sunday) was 40 (the daytime high Saturday was 35, but the temp rose slowly during the evening and overnight hours. Our 24-hour Low was 9. This day last year we had a high of 32 and a low of 4. The all-time record high was 65 in 1925. The record low was -19 in 1978 . Sunrise this morning is 7:08 a.m. and sunset tonight will be 5:59 p.m.

Drake grabs big road win over Loyola

The Drake Bulldogs picked up a big road win over Loyola Chicago on Saturday 83-76. The Bulldogs built a 12 point halftime lead and held on for the win.

Tucker DeVries dropped in 24 points and Garrett Sturtz had 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in the win.

Drake improves to 19-9 overall and 10-5 in MVC play.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a home game on Monday night against Indiana State at 7;00 p.m.

#6 ISU women roll past #15 Oklahoma

AMES, Iowa – No. 6 Iowa State (22-4, 11-3 Big 12) took care of business in a battle of ranked teams Saturday in Hilton Coliseum, dispatching No. 15 Oklahoma (20-6, 9-5 Big 12), 89-67.

A 10-2 Cyclone run in the first period broke open the game, as the Cyclones cruised the rest of the way and tied the school mark with the 2000-01 squad for the best start through 26 games.

ISU’s romp came in the usual way with a lot of 3-pointers (16), efficient shooting (47.0 percent) and pinpoint accuracy at the free-throw line (11-of-11).

Ashley Joens became ISU’s all-time leading scorer in the last game vs. Texas and she kept adding to her school-record total with a game-high 28 points, the 53rd 20-point game of her career. She also grabbed a game-high nine boards.

ISU is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Kansas. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. CT.

Drake women beat UNI

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Anna Miller and Megan Meyer each tallied 16 points in the Drake women’s basketball win, 73-68, over UNI Saturday afternoon.

The duo were leading the Bulldogs (13-12, 5-9 MVC) in scoring and rebounding throughout the game.

Miller, the freshman forward, fell just short of a double-double when she grabbed nine rebounds in addition to her 16 points. She led Drake with four offensive boards and five defensive boards.

Meyer grabbed five boards in addition to her 16 points. She also grabbed three steals to lead Drake.

The Bulldogs return to their home court to host Illinois State and Bradley, starting Friday Feb. 25.

Iowa women score upset over #5 Indiana

The No. 22/25 Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the No. 5/6 Indiana Hoosiers, 96-91, inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana, — the first win in Assembly Hall for the Hawkeyes since 2011-12. Iowa’s 96 points are the most that any opponent has scored against Indiana this season.

Sophomore Caitlin Clarks notched her 13th season and 22nd career double-double, tallying 18 points and 12 assists.

All eight Hawkeyes that played and all five starters scored in double figures, including senior Monika Czinano (22), junior McKenna Warnock (21), Clark (18), redshirt junior Kate Martin (13) and junior Gabbie Marshall (10). Martin’s 13 points are a season high.

Up Next: Iowa hosts No. 5/6 Indiana on Monday, Feb. 21, inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT) on B1G Network.
