24-hour waiting period for abortions now in effect in Iowa

News

July 9th, 2022 by admin

Iowa’s attorney general says a 24-hour waiting period for abortions went into effect statewide Friday. On June 17th, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled a 24 hour waiting period for an abortion was constitutional. Iowa abortion providers began scheduling two appointments, at least a day apart — the first to certify the patient had an ultrasound and was given the option to see the image and the second for abortion. This week, the Iowa Supreme Court rejected the governor’s request to reopen the case so the court could consider a new legal standard making it harder to find other abortion restrictions unconstitutional. By refusing to rehear the case, that has cleared the way for the 2020 law requiring the 24 hour waiting period for abortions to take effect.

Web series trains Iowa business owners on how to hire refugees

News

July 9th, 2022 by admin

Iowa has a labor shortage at the same time there’s an influx of refugees, so Iowa Workforce Development is now partnering with resettlement groups to place Iowa’s newest residents in jobs. Stephanie Moris, director of the Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa, says before a business hires a refugee, resources should be in place, as more businesses are open to hiring non-English speakers.

Moris says employers need to be innovative when it comes to addressing barriers like language and transportation for refugees. That’s why IowaWorks developed the three-part series on how to tackle such issues. They’re now available online for businesses across Iowa to access. Edgar Ramirez helped lead the webinar series and says he sometimes sees businesses hire refugees without forethought.

Ramirez says he wants the state to focus on building more infrastructure for refugees. He’s helping to organize job fairs across Iowa that will specifically spotlight the refugee community in the coming months.

Kayaking continues to be a hot activity

Lakes and rivers were busy during the Independence Day holiday and that is expected to continue throughout the summer — with many people trying their hand at kayaking. D-N-R river programs outreach coordinator, Todd Robertson, says you shouldn’t head out onto rivers without doing a little preparation.

He said learning and working on some basic paddling strokes can be very beneficial.

He says you have to be prepared for both ends of the spectrum from swollen lakes, to ones that are down.

Robertson says kayaks have been flying off the shelves the last couple of years.

Robertson says. He says the D-N-R has a kayak and canoe school you can access on their website on how to paddle. They also offer classes and Robertson says some retailers that sell boats that actually give short lessons. Robertson recommends before you buy a kayak or canoe that you rent one and they’ll give you some quick instruction. He says there are also a lot of online videos that can be helpful in learning about paddling.

Atlantic comes up just short against Glenwood

The Atlantic baseball team had a lead for much of the night and fought to the bitter end but came up short 3-2 to Glenwood in a Class 3A Substate 8 Quarterfinal on Friday in Glenwood.

The Trojans grabbed the lead with two runs in the third inning. Nolan Waters led off with a single. Easton O’Brien then laid down a bunt and Glenwood pitcher Kayden Anderson picked it up and tried for the put out at first but hit O’Brien in the back of the helmet with the throw. That allowed O’Brien to reach second and put two in scoring position for the Trojans. Jayden Proehl then drove in one on a sac-fly to center. Two batters later Garrett McLaren brought in another run with a double. Atlantic would hold that lead until the sixth.

Glenwood had lots of base-runners early but never got the key hit needed to score. The Rams stranded 7 runners in the first three innings and left a total of 12 on base in the game. The Rams got two on right away in the sixth with Caleb Dressel earning a walk and Nolan Little dropping in a single. Jayme Fritts moved the runners over with a bunt and Atlantic chose to load the bases by walking Kayden Anderson. Lane Nelson then walked in a run and he was pulled from the game for Wyatt Redinbaugh. JD Colpitts then drove in another run with a single and a passed ball during Risto Lappala’s at bat allowed courtesy runner Nolan Clark to come home and give the Rams the lead.

Atlantic did get the tying run over to third in the 7th. Easton O’Brien earned a two-out walk, stole his way to second, and then moved to third on a bad pickoff attempt by JD Colpitts who came on for the final out. Jayden Proehl ended up striking out to leave O’Brien at third and end the game. Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer was proud of the way the guys fought to the end.

The Trojans were down a couple starters with unfortunate injuries earlier in the week. Ethan Sturm and Carter Pellett both suffered season ending injuries on Wednesday and Coach Brummer was proud of the way some young guys stepped in.

The Trojans end their season at 9-18. Glenwood improved to 18-9. The Rams will travel to Harlan for a Substate Semifinal on Monday. Harlan advanced with a 2-0 win over Carroll.
