California man arrested following a pursuit in Guthrie County

(Stuart, Iowa) – Officials with the Stuart Police Department report a California man faces multiple charges following his arrest Friday evening. The incident leading to the arrest of Jordin Andres Polanco began a little after 5-p.m., Friday, when  a Stuart Police Officer attempted to stop a vehicle driving recklessly in the 3200 block of White Pole Road. The driver – later identified as Polanco – refused to stop for the Police Officer and accelerated through Stuart at a high rate of speed.
The chase continued west onto White Pole Road into rural Guthrie County. Shortly after passing Talon Ave., Polanco jumped from the moving vehicle. He then ran west along White Pole Road and attempted to enter two separate passing vehicles by opening their doors. While attempting to enter one of the vehicles it is alleged that Polanco assaulted a female driver while trying to force her from the vehicle. As an Officer neared Polanco he ran south into a corn field. The suspect was seen exiting the corn field a short time later and was apprehended by Stuart Police and a Guthrie County Deputy. Polanco resisted arrest and an electronic control device was deployed.
Polanco was then transported to the Guthrie County Jail and was charged with: Felony eluding, Reckless Driving, Interference With Official Acts x2, Driving While License Revoked, Assault On Persons Engaged in Certain Occupations, Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd offense (cocaine), OWI 1st Offense, and multiple traffic offenses. A Nebraska woman who was in the vehicle with Polanco during the pursuit had injuries consistent with being assaulted and is considered a victim in this case.
The Stuart Police Department was assisted by the Adair and Guthrie County Sheriff’s Departments, Iowa State Patrol, Panora Police Department and Stuart Rescue. Authorities say this is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be filed at a later date.
Criminal charges are allegations of crime supported by probable cause. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Iowa beats Nevada and the weather

A strange start to the season took a bizarre turn for Iowa as the Hawkeyes beat Nevada 27-0, a game that was halted three times due to lightning and did not end until after 1:30 Sunday morning. Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz says the locker room looked like a baseball clubhouse during the more than four hours of delays.

The offense made progress, in part because receivers Nico Ragaini and Keegan Johnson returned from injury.

The Hawkeyes open Big Ten play Saturday night at Rutgers.

Iowa State rolls past Ohio

Iowa State gets ready to open Big 12 play at home this week against 17th ranked Baylor. The Cyclones are 3-0 and coach Matt Campbell has been happy with the effort after a 43-10 win over Ohio.

Campbell says the Cyclones are still making too many mistakes.

The Atlantic Parks and Rec Department, which is slated to meet at the Kiddie Korral, at Sunnyside Park, beginning at 5:15-p.m.  Action items/New Business will include: A review of Park Board vacancy applications; Looking ahead to the Sept. 26th Splash Pad Work Session; The “Healthiest State” walk; and, the Memorial Flag Pole at the Schildberg Recreation Area. Also, Parks & Rec Director Bryant Rasmussen will reports on several matters, including the Sunnyside Pool, Hyggefest, Tour de Parks, the Scarecrow Contest, Produce in the Park, and the All Class Reunion.

The Griswold School Board meeting begins at 5:30-p.m. in the High School Conference Room. New Business includes: Approval of a Resolution to participate in the Instructional Support Levy (ISL); Approval of 2022-23 Board Goals; Possible approval of the SIAC Committee; Approval of –  a contract with Coca-Cola, Official Depositories for the District, and of a Request for Allowable Growth & Supplemental Aid for a 2021-22 Special Education Deficit. Discussion items include: The Open Enrollment Report, Board of Directors Redistricting, and the first reading of certain 500-series Board Policies.

And, the Audubon School Board will meet 7-p.m. Monday, in the High School Board Room. Their session begins with a Work Session for Policy Review. During the regular session, they will dive into action items, including approval of the following: The 2nd Reading of some 700- and 800-series Board Policies; SIAC Committee Membership; An SBRC application for MSA – Special Education Deficit in the amount of $4,759.90; Building Project Change Orders; Approval of a Mediation Settlement with Construct; An agreement with Denovo, and action on any Personnel matters to come before the Board. Superintendent Eric Trager will report on a Tree Grant, and he’ll have an update the Building Project.

2 fatal crashes in Iowa, Sunday; 1 injury accident Saturday

Two crashes in Iowa on Sunday claimed two lives. The Iowa State Patrol reports a single-vehicle accident in southern Iowa’s Decatur County resulted in the death of the driver of the vehicle. 45-year-old Luke Neil Helton, of Leon, died during the crash that happened at around 2-p.m. Authorities say Helton was driving a 20111 Chevy 1500 pickup southbound on 253rd Avenue, just south of 217th Street, when he became unconscious due to unknown medical conditions. The pickup left the road and crashed through a fence, and ended up in a pond. The accident was discovered by the property owner. Helton died at the scene.

The second crash involved a 2009 Mercury Mariner SUV. It happened at around 6:22-a.m. Sunday, in northwest Iowa’s Sioux County. The Patrol says the vehicle was traveling westbound on B-40, when it left the road for reasons unknown. The SUV entered the north ditch, vaulted a culvert and struck an embankment before coming to rest. The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Felipe Reyes Lopez-Lopez, of Rock Valley, died at the scene.

His passengers, 32-year-old Marco Vinco Lopez-Lopez, and a three-year old female, both of Rock Valley, were injured, and transported by Sioux Center Ambulance to the hospital in Sioux Center. before being flown to the hospital in Sioux Falls. The child was not properly restrained in the vehicle. Marco Lopez-Lopez was wearing his seat belt. The Patrol says alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor to the crash.

And, a man from Des Moines suffered multiple injuries during an accident Saturday afternoon, in southern Madison County. The State Patrol reports 52-year-old Sefering Benavides was driving a 2022 Ford Explorer eastbound on the Cumming Highway, when the SUV veered off the road, went down an embankment, and struck some trees. The accident happened at around 1:15-p.m. Benevides, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for treatment of his injuries. Multiple charges against him are pending.

EDWARD OTTO SCHRADER, 86, of Greenfield, died Friday, September 16, 2022, at the Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.  Celebration of Life services for EDWARD SCHRADER will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1st, at the Bridgewater Activity Center in Bridgewater. Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

A simple luncheon will be held immediately following the service; Online condolences may be left to the family at www.lambfuneralhomes.com.

DCI Assists Worth County in Death Investigation

Worth County, Iowa – On 9/16/2022, a female body was found in the Shell Rock River near 390th St and Raven Ave. The body recovered was identified as Melissa Jo Olson, age 45, of Northwood. The incident is being investigated by the Worth County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa DNR, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa State Patrol, Worth County Emergency Management, Mason City Fire Department, Kensett Fire Department, and Worth County Secondary Roads.

Law enforcement is seeking information from anyone who may have observed Olson, a 45 year old white female with brown hair, approximately 5 foot 6 inches tall, walking in the area of Highway 65 and along 390th Street, between Manly and Northwood on Thursday, September 15 and into the morning hours of Friday, September 16.

Drake falters in second half at Idaho

The Drake Bulldogs kept within striking distance early but came up empty in the second half of a 42-14 loss at Idaho on Saturday. The Bulldogs led 14-7 early in the second quarter but Idaho pulled ahead 20-14 by halftime and rolled away in the second half.

The Vandals outgained the Bulldogs 462-212 using a balanced attack. Idaho had 223 rushing yards and 239 passing. Elisha Cummings and Roshaun Johnson each had a rushing score for Idaho.

Drake got a rushing touchdown from Davion Cherwin and Dorian Boyland. The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 on the season and Idaho moved to 1-2.

The Bulldogs will return home to Drake Stadium for their PFL opener against Marist on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.

UNI falls to Sacramento State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa –  The UNI Panthers had another strong passing game but came up short again to Sacramento State 37-21.

UNI racked up 270 yards passing, compared to Sacramento State’s 254 yards. The Hornets were able to rush for 170 yards, compared to the Panthers’ 133 yards.

The offensive stats between both teams were comparable with UNI racking up 403 total yards to Sacramento State’s 424 yards. The Hornets Built a 24-7 lead though by halftime and held on for the win. UNI clawed within 27-21 by the end of the third but the Hornets got a 38-yard field goal and a rushing score with :41 left to seal the win.

UP NEXT
UNI will head to Western Illinois for its second MVFC game of the year. Kick is set for 3 p.m. in Macomb, Illinois. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
