Spartans win double overtime thriller over CAM

Sports

December 9th, 2022 by admin

Easton Nelson’s layup in the final 20 seconds sent Exira-EHK to a double-overtime win over CAM 73-71 on Friday night in front of a packed house in Anita. The Spartans led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter but the Cougars clawed their way back in the second half.

The Spartans led 34-23 at halftime and the Cougars trimmed the lead to 4 at 44-40 by the end of the third. CAM got within 2 points five different times in the fourth quarter and finally tied it in the final seconds on a slicing layup by Seth Hensley. Tied at 57 the two teams traded blows in the extra session and combined to go 10-10 at the free throw line. The final two free throws in overtime were drained by Sam Foreman to tie the game at 63 and send it to another extra period. With the game square at 71 the Spartans ran a set that got Easton Nelson a great look on the left block that he banked in to put Sparty up 73-71. CAM had one last chance but a scramble for the ball after Chase Jahde hit the deck and tried to put up a shot from his knees let time run out. After the game Nelson talked about that final bucket.

Spartans head coach Doug Newton was proud of the response his team had in the big moments.

Cash Emgarten led the Spartans with 18 points and he said a win like this should give the team a great boost.

Derrek Kommes added 16 points and Trey Petersen had 12 to help the Spartans move to 3-0 on the season. They get right back after it against IKM-Manning on Saturday afternoon.

CAM was led by 28 points from Sam Foreman and 22 from Chase Jahde. The Cougars fall to 1-2 and will head to face a tough West Harrison team on Tuesday.

Exira-EHK girls grind out win over CAM

Sports

December 9th, 2022 by admin

Exira-EHK freshman Brylie Andersen glanced in a three high off the glass from the corner to help lift Exira-EHK to a 62-58 win over the CAM Cougars on Friday night in Anita. It was a back-and-forth affair and the Cougars were up 58-56 in the final minute when Andersen got the three to put the Spartans on top. They would get a couple more free throws and a big rebound on a free throw miss to seal the win.

Exira-EHK head coach Tom Petersen was proud of the effort, “We faced a lot of adversity tonight. Obviously it’s a game of runs but for the girls to find a way, that’s what I told them in the locker room I was really proud of the effort. That’s one of the things I love about this group, the 50-50 balls they are all over the floor so I love ’em.”

The Spartans started the game on a 10-0 run but the Cougars rallied to lead 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. Exira-EHK led 31-29 at half and 44-40 at the end of the third. The game featured ten lead changes.

Exira-EHK was led by 15 points from Quinn Grubbs, 14 from Jaelynn Petersen, and 11 from Shay Burmeister. The Spartans improved to 3-0 and will be back at it on Saturday with a trip to IKM-Manning.

CAM got 15 points each from Reese Snyder and Eva Steffensen. The Cougars fall to 3-2 and will next up head to West Harrison on Tuesday.

Atlantic Planning & Zoning Commission to act on Herring resignation, & Prairie Hills final plat

News

December 9th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The City of Atlantic’s Planning and Zoning Commission will meet 5:30-p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the Council’s Chambers at City Hall. During their session, the Commission will note the resignation and service of Chair Roger Herring, and welcome to the Commission, Kyle Steffens.

Nominations will then take place for the Chair’s position, followed by the appointment of a new P&Z Chairperson, nominations for Vice-Chair, and an Order to appoint a new P&Z Commission Vice-Chair. In other business, the Commission will review and act on a recommendation with regard to the Prairie Hills Development Final Plat. The site is located on the City’s southeast side. During their meeting last month, the Atlantic Planning and Zoning Commission approved and recommended to the City Council, adoption of the Prairie Hills Subdivision Preliminary Plat.

Prairie Hills Development Final Plat as prepared for the Atlantic P&Z Commission (12/2022)

Earlier this year, the Atlantic City Council approved the purchase of 41.54 acres of farmland for $830,000 from Jim Comes. The property became known as the Prairie Hill housing development project. The City is financing the project through a general obligation debt. The revenue sources toward the debt payments would be lot sales and farmland leases as the city sells lots for the construction of new homes and leases on the unused portions of the subdivision for farm use.
