CRESTON, Iowa (AP) — Crews in the southwestern city of Creston were struggling yesterday to reach what appeared to be a plugged sewer line. The state Department of Natural Resources says workers discovered the problem yesterday afternoon in an area about a quarter-mile from a road. Gaining access to the line has been difficult and crews were cutting trees to reach the area last night.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A House panel has approved a bill that would limit the growth of local government and slow the projected increase in the taxable value of residential and agricultural properties. The bill backed by Governor Terry Branstad now goes to the full House. Some Senate Democrats say they worry the bill would reduce state revenues.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad and China’s consul general are stressing the importance of trade in advance of a visit to Iowa by China’s vice president. Speaking at a Statehouse news conference yesterday, Consul General Yang Guoqaing noted that China’s relationship with Iowa is vital because the state is an agricultural powerhouse. Branstad said yesterday he’s committed to improving trade relations with China.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Phil Parker could have left Iowa for a defensive coordinator’s job at another major program more than once. Ferentz also said yesterday that departed offensive coordinator Ken O’Keefe’s job will be a tough one to fill after O’Keefe left for the Miami Dolphins.

Iowa’s Ferentz introduces defensive coordinator

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Phil Parker could have left Iowa for a defensive coordinator’s job at another major program more than once. Ferentz says that while he appreciated Parker’s loyalty, the reason he made Parker Iowa’s new defensive coordinator was because he the best man for the job. Ferentz announced Parker’s promotion from defensive backs coach Tuesday. Ferentz says Parker has proven himself over his 13 seasons with the Hawkeyes and will be outstanding in his expanded role.

Northwestern hosts Iowa tonight in men’s basketball

Northwestern will seek its third straight win when it hosts the Iowa Hawkeyes tonight (Thursday) at the Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Hawks are just one game from moving back to .500 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats won both meetings against Iowa last season. The Hawkeyes are 9-1 when scoring 80 or more points under coach Fran McCaffery. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 7-p.m., with the tip-off at 8.

Wichita State beats Northern Iowa 82-57

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Joe Ragland scored 19 points, leading four Wichita State players in double figures, and the Shockers beat Northern Iowa 82-57 Wednesday night. Ragland was 5 of 7 from 3-point range and David Kyles had 16 points, making all five of his shots from the field including four 3-pointers, for Wichita State (21-4, 12-2). The Shockers lead the Missouri Valley race by one game over No. 17 Creighton; they travel to Omaha, Neb., to play the Bluejays on Saturday. Toure Murry scored 12 points and Garrett Stutz had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Wichita State, which never trailed against the Panthers (16-10, 6-8). Seth Tuttle led Northern Iowa with 15 points. Wichita State led by 21 before UNI closed the half on a 13-0 run to trail 43-35 at the break. The Panthers got within three points, but the Shockers later scored 12 in a row to put it away.

Illinois State defeats Drake 64-53

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Tyler Brown scored a career-high 26 points and Jackie Carmichael had 18 points and 20 rebounds Wednesday night, leading Illinois State past Drake 64-53. Carmichael nearly matched Drake’s rebounding total as the Redbirds (16-9, 8-6 Missouri Valley) owned a 45-23 advantage on the boards. Brown made all 12 of his free-throw attempts and Carmichael was 10 of 12 while the Bulldogs overall were 7 for 13 from the foul line. Jeremy Jeffers led Drake with 13 points. Aaron Hawley scored 12 and Rayvonte Rice scored 11 for Drake (13-12, 6-8), which has lost three straight since beating Wichita State in triple overtime on Jan. 28. The Bulldogs never led on Wednesday, but Illinois State never was ahead by more than 13 and didn’t put the game out of reach until the final minutes. Drake shot 39 percent while the Redbirds shot 34 percent.

Wastewater Release in Creston

CRESTON – The city of Creston discovered untreated wastewater bypassing to Hurley Creek on the southwest side of town late Wednesday afternoon. The Union County city is working to determine the cause of the wastewater discharge and to fix the problem. A plugged sewer line is the suspected cause, but the discharge is at least one-fourth mile north of Adams Road, hampering the city’s repairs. The city is cutting trees to provide access to the location.

The Creston Wastewater Superintendent asks city residents to avoid hiking the south end of the popular trail near McKinley Lake until repairs are completed. The city estimates about 20 gallons per minute are being released, but it’s unknown when the discharge began or how much wastewater has been released. The DNR will check McKinley Lake Thursday morning for effects of the discharge.

VELMA HENRIETTA LUBBE, 91, of Harlan died Monday, February 6th in Harlan.  Funeral services for Velma Henrietta Lubbe will be held on Friday, February 10th at 11:00am at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel in Council Bluffs,where they are also handling the arrangements.

LARRY LEE WARD, JR., 50, of Atlantic died Tuesday, February 7th at his home.  Graveside services for LARRY LEE WARD, JR.,  will be held 10-a.m. Sat., Feb. 11th, at the Southlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic is in charge of the arrangements.

Pickup rollover injures two men, charges pending

Two men suffered non-life threatening injuries after the pickup truck they were in rolled over early this morning, in Council Bluffs. Authorities say charges are pending completion of a blood-alcohol test on the driver of the truck, 18-year old Kyle Danick, of Red Oak. Danick, and his passenger, 22-year old Tyall Thompson, of Bellevue, NE, were traveling in a 1982 Chevy S-10 pickup when the vehicle went out of control on South Main Street, at around 2-a.m. Witnesses told police the vehicle was traveling south at a high rate of speed when it crossed 16th Avenue and drove through the snow into the Iowa Interstate Railroad yard.

The truck hit the railroad tracks, vaulted into the air and landed on the driver’s side, before flipping onto its roof. Danick and Thompson were able to extricate themselves from the vehicle. The men were transported to Alegent Health/Mercy Hospital for treatment.
