Police in Council Bluffs report a fast food store was robbed Monday night. Officials say at around 9:50-p.m., two masked robbers entered through the back door of the the Popeye’s Chicken at 3440 West Broadway just before closing time, and demanded money. One of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun, held five employees of the store at gunpoint, while the other took an undetermined amount of cash.
The robbers fled out the back door of the restaurant. Officials say no getaway car was seen. Employees said the act was committed by two white men wearing gloves and hooded sweatshirts. The men were described at being about 5-feet 6, to 5-feet 8-inches tall.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ only scheduled game without Tamba Hali certainly didn’t go well. Their leading pass rusher was suspended for the season opener, a 40-24 loss to Atlanta on Sunday, for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He was joined on the sidelines by cornerback Brandon Flowers, defensive tackle Anthony Toribio and safety Kendrick Lewis, all due to injuries. Hali was back at the Chiefs’ practice facility Monday, but it’s unclear whether any of the other ailing players will be ready for next Sunday’s game at Buffalo. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said Flowers is the most likely to participate when practice resumes Wednesday. The other two starters could miss yet another week.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has ordered flags at state government buildings and other sites to be flown at half-staff to honor those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Branstad is calling for the flags to be lowered today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at public buildings, grounds and other facilities.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal judge has found two anti-war activists guilty of misdemeanor trespassing at central Missouri’s Whiteman Air Force Base. Ron Faust of Kansas City and Brian Terrell of Maloy, Iowa, were among 40 protesters who demonstrated at the air base in April against the use of unmanned military drones. They face a maximum six-month prison sentence.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. Attorney Stephanie Rose has been confirmed as a federal judge in Iowa. The Senate voted 89-1 yesterday to confirm Rose in Iowa’s Southern District that includes Council Bluffs, Des Moines and Davenport. President Barack Obama nominated her in February.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (vee-yah-ry-GOH’-sah) will be headlining a fundraising dinner in Des Moines next month. Democratic officials say he will give a keynote address at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner on October 20. Villaraigosa chaired the Democratic National Convention last week in Charlotte, N.C.

It was a bad weekend for motorcycle accidents in southwest Iowa. Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said 38-year-old Joshua Suhr, of Council Bluffs, who was not wearing a helmet, died Sunday at a hospital in Omaha, following an accident that took place Saturday evening, northwest of Underwood. Witnesses told authorities two southbound motorcycles traveling on L-34 passed them at a high rate of speed. Suhr, who was on one of the cycles, apparently wasn’t able to negotiate the curve near Sumac Road, and lost control of the vehicle.
The Iowa State Patrol says a Mills County man was injured in a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon, near Glenwood. Officials say 20-year-old Lucas Ring, of Glenwood, was thrown from the Yamaha FZR-600R cycle he was driving, when it entered a ditch. The Patrol says Ring was wearing a helmet. The accident happened at around 2:40-p.m., when as Ring was traveling north on 221st Street, he drove on the shoulder and lost control. Ring was transported to Jennie Edmundson Hospital by Glenwood Rescue.
And, 39-year-old Renae Hansen was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic and later transferred by helicopter to Creighton Medical Center, after the motorcycle she was driving southbound on Highway 83 near Walnut, ran off the roadway on a curve and entered the south ditch, at around 4-p.m., Saturday. It was not clear from the Sheriff’s report where Hansen was from.
Police in Glenwood say one person was taken into custody following an investigation Monday into a suspicious persons report. Authorities said 25-year-old Kenneth Hartwell (residence not listed) was charged with 4th-degree theft, 3rd-degree criminal mischief, and driving under suspension, after officers responded to a call about a person tampering with campers in the 200 block of Valley Street, in Glenwood. During their investigation, officers located and items allegedly stolen from the campers. Hartwell was transported to the Mills County Jail.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cameron Maybin hit a two-run homer, Will Venable had three RBIs and the San Diego Padres handed the struggling St. Louis Cardinals an 11-3 loss on Monday night. The loss dropped the Cardinals 9 1-2 games behind first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. St. Louis, which has lost four of five, had its lead cut to one game over the idle Los Angeles Dodgers for the second NL wild-card berth. Maybin connected for his seventh homer off Jaime Garcia (4-7) that broke a 2-all tie in the fourth inning. Maybin had three hits and scored three runs. Chris Denorfia tied his career high with four hits and also had two RBIs. Logan Forsythe added three hits to tie his career high as San Diego matched its season best for runs and had 17 hits.
Lance Berkman is scheduled for season-ending surgery on his troublesome right knee Tuesday, leaving the St. Louis Cardinals without a dangerous bat as they try to secure a playoff spot. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny announced the news Monday before his team played the San Diego Padres. The defending World Series champions began the night with a 1½-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the second NL wild-card spot. Berkman, who had surgery on the same knee in May, traveled to Houston on Monday to meet with the medical team that performed the first operation. The same group of doctors will perform the surgery Tuesday (Today).
