Gale & Ann Fisher Inducted into Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame

News

August 24th, 2023 by Jim Field

Gale & Ann Fisher of Montgomery County were inducted into the 2023 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 20. Ninety-one Iowa counties participated this year and selected 127 inductees for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4H Foundation President, David Bolte, and Interim State 4-H Program Leader, Mitchell Hoyer, as they were introduced on stage.

Gale and the late Ann Fisher grew up participating in 4-H. Gale was a member of the East Sunrisers 4-H Club and Ann was a member of the Peppy Farmerettes 4-H Club. They lived the values they learned from 4-H and instilled those values in their children, Jerry, Kim, Vonda, & Darrin.

Ann was a leader of the Busy Boosters 4-H Club for many years. She conducted sewing and baking workshops. She wanted every girl to go home with a finished project. Kim and Vonda recall having to rip out several seams because they just weren’t good enough, but she never stepped in and finished for them. Ann was an avid baker and loved sharing her knowledge. She conducted workshops all over the county. Since her passing in 2016, her family gets together each November to bake her recipes and sell the goods at the Villisca Craft Show and then award the best pie baker of the Montgomery County Fair with a pie server. Her legacy continues.

Gale started showing livestock in 1951. He remembers taking livestock to the baseball field to show. Gale has always supported the kids with their 4-H projects. He not only helped his kids but also his nephews, neighbors, grandkids, great-grandkids, and friends. He wants to see any youth that has the desire, to have a livestock project. He still raises lambs and participates in the Adams County Rural Development program that matches lambs with kids. Currently, the 4th generation of the Fisher family is showing and participating in 4-H.

Counties select inductees for their exceptional work in contributing to the lives of 4-H members and the overall 4-H program. Many inductees serve as club leaders, youth mentors, fair superintendents or fair board members, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach county council members, county youth council members, fair judges, financial supporters, chaperones or ISU Extension and Outreach staff members. The inductees have demonstrated dedication, encouragement, commitment and guidance to Iowa’s 4-H’ers through the years.

“We are honored to recognize these special individuals, for their advocacy and dedication to the Iowa 4-H program,” shared Iowa 4-H Foundation Executive Director, Emily Saveraid.

“This is a great way to honor the volunteers and staff across the state of Iowa that generously give their time and talents to foster positive partnerships with our 4-H youth,” said Tillie Good, Iowa 4-H staff and volunteer development manager.

The Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame was initiated in 2002 to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of 4-H. A summary of previous honorees was on display at the 2022 Iowa State Fair in the 4-H Exhibits Building. These summaries are also available at the Iowa 4-H Foundation office in the Extension 4-H Youth Building at Iowa State University. Information about previous inductees to the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame also is available on the Iowa 4-H Foundation website, organized by year and by county. Go to www.iowa4hfoundation.org/ and under the heading “What We Do” select “Recognizing Service” then “Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.”

Lane closures on U.S. 34 from Creston to Thayer begin on Tuesday, Aug. 29

News

August 23rd, 2023 by Jim Field

If you are driving on U.S. 34 from the east city limits of Creston to Thayer in the coming weeks you need to be aware of a road construction project that may slow down your trip.

Starting on Tuesday, August 29, until Thursday, September 28, weather permitting, construction crews will need to close lanes on U.S. 34 so crews can mill the center line rumble strip and place new asphalt on the roadway with rumble strips.  A pilot car and flaggers will assist you through the work zone from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.  A 16-foot lane width restriction will be in place during this project.

Help keep everyone on the road safer.  Drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones.  As in all work zones, you should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.

Cyclones and Hawkeyes to Meet in Battle of Unbeatens

Sports

August 23rd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AMES, Iowa – After a 2-0 opening week which saw Iowa State down both Arizona and Northern Colorado, the Cyclones will look to move to 3-0 for the first time since 2013 when they travel to Iowa City and kick off the 2023 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series against the Hawkeyes. Thursday’s match is set to start at 8 p.m. and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.

The Cyclones’ 2-0 record is the school’s best start to a season since 2015, as ISU will look to build on a hot start out of the gates against Iowa. Thursday’s game against Iowa is the second part of a three-game road stretch for the Cyclones after downing UNCO. ISU concludes road action at South Dakota State this Sunday, August 27.

The Cyclones moved to 2-0 behind a balanced offensive effort as well as a stout defense. Part of that stout defense is redshirt freshman goalkeeper Avery Gillahan, who earlier today was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for her opening two performances.

The Matchup: Iowa State (2-0) at Iowa (2-0)

Where: Iowa Soccer Complex // Iowa City, Iowa

When: August 24 – 8 p.m. CT

Watch: Big Ten Plus

From the Notebook

  • The Cyclones are 2-0 for just the eighth time in program history.
  • An Iowa State win would tie the program’s largest win streak over Iowa as they look to stack back-to-back wins after last year’s 2-1 victory.
  • Mira Emma was the difference in Iowa State’s last matchup – a 1-0 win over Northern Colorado – as she buried a PK past the UNCO goalkeeper to put the Cyclones in front.
  • Of the 19 Cyclones who have seen playing time this season, eight competed in their first action as a Cyclone this past week.
  • After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities.

Leading the Cyclones

A trio of Cyclone seniors have goals to their name this season as Salomé Prat and Abigail Miller each notched a goal in the season-opening win over Arizona, while Mira Emma was the difference against Northern Colorado, scoring off a penalty kick. Emma also has an assist to her name, giving her a team-high three points on the year. The only other Cyclone with a point is another senior, Alex Campana, who transferred in from Marquette.

Three Cyclones have played all 180 minutes of action so far on the year as defenders Chloe Broughton and Hanna Reid have done so, along with Gillahan in the net. Gillahan’s early season play has helped ISU to its 2-0 start as the redshirt freshman allowed just one goal across the two matches, tallying three saves and earning her first career clean sheet against Northern Colorado.

Scouting Iowa

Off to its own 2-0 start, Iowa has also scored three goals across two matches. The Hawkeyes have seen Elle Otto, Josie Durr and Meike Ingles put points on the board. Otto leads the team in points with three, having also tallied an assist, while Kenzie Rolling leads the team in assists with a pair of dimes.

On the defensive side, Iowa goalkeeper Macy Enneking has yet to allow a goal this season, blanking both UMKC and FGCU. Enneking and Samantha Cary are the lone Hawkeyes to have played in all 180 minutes of action so far this season.

Series History

Iowa State and Iowa will meet for the 25th time on Thursday as part of a series that started back in 1997. The Hawkeyes hold the all-time advantage at 14-8-2, but the two teams have split the last four meetings. Under Matt Fannon, Iowa State is 1-1 against Iowa, as the 2020 contest wasn’t played due to COVID. The Cyclones have claimed just two victories in Iowa City, with the last coming in 2005.

Up Next
The Cyclones will return to the pitch this Sunday when they travel to Brookings, South Dakota, to take on the SDSU Jackrabbits. ISU and South Dakota State’s Sunday match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. and the action will be streamed on the Summit League Network.

Iowa State’s Easton Dean on competition in fall camp

Sports

August 23rd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State senior tight end Easton Dean says competition at key spots will make the offense better. ISU is without quarterback Hunter Dekkers and running back Jirehl Brock in fall camp after they were charged in connection to a gambling probe.

Despite missing some key players Dean is confident the Cyclones will make progress this season.

Dean says whoever wins the job of starting quarterback will gain crucial experience.

The Cyclones open at home against Northern Iowa on September second.
