From the Notebook

  • The Cyclones have lost just one match under Coach Fannon when scoring at least two goals. Two seems to be the magic number for the offense.
  • Lauren Hernandez got her name in the scoring column in Thursday night’s loss to Iowa. The sophomore converted off an Olivia Edwards free kick to pull the Cyclones within one with eight minutes remaining.
  • Iowa State leads the Big 12 in shot accuracy, placing 62.1% of its attempts on goal. That’s good enough for the 23rd-highest ranking in the country.
  • Two ranked Big 12 schools, Texas and UCF, dropped matchups on Thursday.
  • Mira Emma was the difference in Iowa State’s last matchup – a 1-0 win over Northern Colorado – as she buried a PK past the UNCO goalkeeper to put the Cyclones in front.
  • After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities.

Leading the Cyclones

Iowa State’s 2-1 record is thanks to a balanced offensive attack. Four different Cyclones (Salomé Prat, Abigail Miller, Mira Emma and Lauren Hernandez) have goals to their names. Prat notched the first goal of the season against Arizona, and Abigail Miller tallied the game-winning goal. Mira Emma was the difference against Northern Colorado, scoring off a penalty kick, and Lauren Hernandez tallied her first score of the season against Iowa. Four different Cyclones have assists, and Emma leads the team in overall points with three.

Two Cyclones have played all 270 minutes of action so far on the year, Hanna Reid and goalkeeper Avery Gillahan. Gillahan’s early season play resulted in her earning Big 12 Freshman of the Week. She also recorded the first clean sheet of her career against Northern Colorado.

Scouting South Dakota State

South Dakota State has been off to a great start in 2023, owning a perfect 3-0 record and outscoring its opponents 12-1. Most recently, SDSU is coming off a 2-1 win over Drake in Des Moines.

Senior forward Maya Hansen has a team-high four goals and an assist for a total of nine points to lead the Jackrabbit attack. Both Jadenn Carrillo and Jenna Hallen each have a pair of goals, while four others have found the back of the net. Laney Murdzek has a team-high three assists, and 11 other players have one to their name.

The Jackrabbits have used a pair of goalkeepers through two games of action, with each keeper playing an ever 135 minutes. Jocelyn Tanner has two starts, while Emma Knack has just one. Knack is the GK who allowed the only Jackrabbit goal.

Series History

The Cyclones and Jackrabbits will meet for the 13th time this Sunday as Iowa State leads the all-time series, 7-3-2. The two schools will meet for the first time since 2018, a game that saw Iowa State earn a 2-0 win in Ames. ISU has lost just one match in Brookings, back in 2008, when it fell to the Jacks 2-1 in doubles overtime.

Up Next
Following its trip to Brookings, Iowa State will return home from its three-game road stint to dace off with the nationally ranked Memphis Tigers on Thursday, August 31. Thursday’s match is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Singleton to Wear No. 58 in Honor Of Curtis Bray

Sports

August 26th, 2023 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State redshirt junior J.R. Singleton will be the latest Cyclone defensive lineman to wear No. 58 in honor and remembrance of former assistant coach Curtis Bray.

The tradition dates back to the 2014 season as an honor to Bray, who passed away that year from a pulmonary embolism. Bray’s presence is still felt inside the Bergstrom Football Complex and each season a new Cyclone is picked to wear the number he wore during his outstanding career at Pittsburgh from 1988-92. Bray was on the Cyclone coaching staff for five seasons (2009-13).

Singleton, a Gurnee, Illinois, native, has been a fixture on the defensive line the last two seasons after redshirting his freshman season in 2020. He is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

“Being chosen to wear the number 58 is nothing short of a blessing,” Singleton said. “Not only are you representing the known name Bray, but you’re representing the ability he had to impact others. We talk about legacy a lot in this program. I always ask myself “how do you want to be remembered?” If I can leave an impact on this team, community and my family I think I struck good. I am grateful for the opportunity and ready for the challenge.”

For the second year, the Curtis Bray Memorial Scholarship will be given in Singleton’s name to a student on campus. This year’s recipient is Savanna Wuebker, a psychology major.

USDA Updates Livestock Disaster Payment Rate to AssistProducers Hard-Hit by Heat and Humidity

Ag/Outdoor, News

August 26th, 2023 by Jim Field

The USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced today it is updating the  Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) payment rate to support livestock producers in the Midwest who have lost cattle to the extreme heat and humidity experienced this summer. To help indemnify ranchers to reflect a trend towards higher cattle weights in feedlots, the 2023 LIP payment rate for beef calves over 800 pounds will increase from $1244 per head to $1618, an increase of $374.

“The recent heat domes plaguing many parts of the country have proven to be unsurvivable for some animals and temperatures are not expected to let up any time soon. This is one of the latest, many examples of how a changing climate is creating immediate challenges for farmers and ranchers, and we’re finding that our emergency relief programs need to adapt accordingly,” said FSA Administrator Zach Ducheneaux. “Given these circumstances and the trend towards higher weights in feedlots, it became clear that USDA’s Livestock Indemnity Payment rates were not reflective of the true market value for cattle. This change will better indemnify the investments producers have in the livestock they raise, and we will continue to find flexibilities where possible to help our farmers and ranchers in the wake of climate-related impacts.”

LIP provides benefits to livestock owners and some contract growers for livestock deaths exceeding normal mortality from eligible adverse weather events, certain predation losses and reduced sales prices due to injury from an eligible loss. Indemnity payments are made at a rate of 75% of the prior year’s average fair market value of the livestock.

The updated LIP payment rate is effective immediately and will be applied retroactively starting Jan.1, 2023, for all eligible causes of loss including excessive heat, tornado, winter storms, and other qualifying adverse weather. Producers who have already received LIP payments for 2023 losses will receive an additional payment, if applicable, commensurate with this updated rate. For details on eligibility and payment rates, review the LIP fact sheet.

FSA recognizes that an annual update of LIP payment rates does not account for the volatile nature of livestock markets and is further exploring flexibilities to establish more current payment rates.

Trojan Football holds on against late rally in Osceola

Sports

August 26th, 2023 by Jim Field

(Osceola) — Atlantic Football survived a scare against the Clarke Indians winning 47-33 in their season opener. Atlantic had a few questions heading into the fall 2023 season. How would they do after graduating a strong senior class? What will Zayden Parker be like in the pocket? Can Colton Rasmussen continue his high production from last year? All of those questions were answered in one night.

Atlantic came out in the first quarter confident. The run game was starting to click for Atlantic and that’s when Zayden Parker threw a 55 yard dime to Kinnick Juhl for a score. The Trojans were then up 7-0 and they held onto the lead for the rest of the night.

The rest of the night turned into an offensive slugfest with both teams exchanging blows. The second quarter brought two more touchdown throws for Parker and they were both to Colton Rasmussen. Rasmussen finished the night with 4 receptions, 61 yards, and 3 touchdowns. The Trojans also had a rushing touchdown from Dante Hedrington before the half. The rushing game was greatly assisted by Hedrington’s performance of 12 carries, 102 yards, and 2 TD’s.

Clarke was able to score halfway through the second thanks to a 2 yard dart in the end zone from Jack Cooley to Brock Watson. When it came to targets for Cooley, Watson would be his favorite for the night with 9 receptions 100 yards, and 1 touchdown. The score was 26-7 and it seemed that Atlantic was going to put the game away.

The third and fourth quarter saw an offensive surge from the Indians where they scored 26 points and nearly came back against Atlantic. The game was 40-33 late into the fourth quarter. What put them away was a late fourth quarter 70 yard bomb from Parker to Xavier Darrow to make it a 14 point game. Thanks to the efforts of Jack Cooley going 21/36, 222 yards, and 2 TD’s. Cooley’s grit would not be enough to rally the Indians as they would lose 47-33.

The win was not pretty with nearly giving up a lead nearly towards the end of the game.  But, Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer was pleased with his offensive line performance.

The 70 yard touchdown throw to Barrow was a risky call so late in the quarter, but Coach Brummer trusted his staff and players.

Quarterback Zayden Parker would be the star for Atlantic going 7/9, 192 yards, and 5 touchdowns. Coach Brummer noted his performance with a smile

Clarke’s next game is on the road at Knoxville Friday, September 1st. The Trojans will be at home next Friday, September 1st taking on the Glenwood Rams.

DeSantis on post-debate campaign swing through Iowa

News

August 25th, 2023 by Jim Field

Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is on a three day campaign swing through Iowa following this week’s debate with seven other candidates. DeSantis says he chose to emphasize his record as Florida’s governor rather than quarrel with the others.

DeSantis and his family stopped at the Field of Dreams last (Thursday) night and DeSantis spoke to a crowd in Rock Rapids this (Friday) morning.

DeSantis also has promised to classify Mexican drug cartels that are shipping fentanyl into the U-S as foreign terrorist organizations.

Former Iowa G-O-P co-chair Cody Hoefert (HOH-fert) also spoke to the crowd and said after watching Wednesday’s debate, he decided to endorse DeSantis.

ISU cooling system back up

News

August 25th, 2023 by Jim Field

The campus cooling system at Iowa State is back up and running — but classes won’t return to normal until Monday.

Information from I-S-U says crews were able to restart the cooling system faster than originally thought following a fire at the university’s power plant Thursday. But it will take time for some campus buildings to cool down and classes will be virtual today (Friday).

The Ames Fire Department reported a piece of equipment at the power plant failed and caught operating oil that was connected to it on fire. It took firefighters about an hour to put out the fire.

Gas prices are creeping down as Labor Day nears and summer travel ends

News

August 25th, 2023 by Jim Field

This is the last weekend before Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, and gasoline prices are inching downward as demand drops with less travel, though prices are still high compared to a year ago and even a month ago. Triple-A-Iowa spokesman Brian Ortner says crude oil prices are gradually falling and that translates to a drop in prices at the pump.

The motor club says the average price for a gallon of self-serve unleaded is now three-61 in Iowa, which is 21-cents below the national average.

Triple-A says the highest gas prices in the state are in both Ames and Dubuque at three-76 a gallon, while the lowest prices are in Waterloo/Cedar Falls at three-47.

Iowans need to be vigilant for scams as they restart student loans payments

News

August 25th, 2023 by Jim Field

More than 400-thousand Iowans will have to resume paying off their student loan debt in October. Nathan Nash, an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission, warns scammers are hoping to capitalize.

Every U-S government website ends with dot-gov. Nash says the Federal Trade Commission recently stopped scammers claiming they could get student loans forgiven — for a fee.

The defendants in the recent student loan scam claimed be from the U-S Department of Education and falsely promised to lower or eliminate student loan payments.
