St. Ansgar Jumps Out Early and Hangs on to Beat St. Albert for 1A Title

St. Ansgar jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and held on to beat previously unbeaten St. Albert of Council Bluffs 25-15 in the 1A State Championship game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Saturday morning.

St. Albert held the advantage in nearly every statistical category but had three turnovers in the ballgame that helped St. Ansgar take the victory.  John Sievert had 25 carries for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win.

St. Ansgar finishes their championship season at 12-2, while St. Albert ended at 13-1.

UNI Pulls Out OT Win At Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. — Tyler Sievertsen kicked a 40-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to tie the game, then won it in the second overtime with a 36-yarder as Northern Iowa beat Illinois State 23-20 on Saturday.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime. Tirrell Rennie, who finished with 100 yards rushing, ran 12 yards for a score for Northern Iowa (9-2, 7-1 Missouri Valley), but the Redbirds (7-4, 6-2) tied it when Matt Brown threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Marvon Sanders on fourth down. In the second overtime, Illinois State had the ball first, but Nick Aussieker’s 37-yard field goal missed wide left. Sievertsen made his third field goal of the game to win it.

Cliffton Gordon’s 1-yard run with 2:57 remaining had put Illinois State in front 13-10. The Panthers then drove 38 yards after Carlos Anderson’s 39-yard kickoff return to set up Sievertsen’s tying field goal.

McNutt, Coker Lead Hawkeyes Past Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — James Vandenberg threw three touchdown passes, including two to Marvin McNutt, to help Iowa defeat Purdue 31-21 on Saturday for the Hawkeyes’ first road win of the season.

Vandenberg passed for 273 yards, and McNutt caught nine passes for 151 yards.

Marcus Coker rushed for 139 yards on 30 carries for the Hawkeyes (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten), who had lost their three road games by a combined 14 points.

The Hawkeyes outgained the Boilermakers 408 yards to 286 but struggled to put away scrappy Purdue.

Antavian Edison caught nine passes for 97 yards and Ralph Bolden ran for 71 yards for Purdue on Senior Day. Quarterback Robert Marve threw two interceptions and fumbled once.

The Boilermakers (5-6, 3-4) need to win Saturday at Indiana to become bowl-eligible.

Iowa scored on its first possession with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Vandenberg to McNutt.

Purdue responded with a 13-play, 63-yard drive. Gabe Holmes caught his first career touchdown pass, a 14-yarder from Caleb TerBush, to tie the score.

Iowa answered when Vandenberg found C.J. Fiedorowicz for a 5-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7.

Purdue’s Carson Wiggs considered a fake punt but decided to kick while running instead. It was blocked by Collin Sleeper, and Iowa recovered at the Purdue 9. The Boilermakers caught a break when Mica’il McCall fumbled on the second play of Iowa’s possession, and Purdue’s Will Lucas recovered.

After an exchange of punts, Marve stepped in at quarterback for TerBush and led the Boilermakers down the field. But Tanner Miller intercepted Marve at the Iowa 1-yard line.

On the next play, Vandenberg dropped back into his end zone and was pressured by Dwayne Beckford. Vandenberg fumbled as he was going down, and Purdue’s Brandon Taylor recovered in the end zone to tie the score at 14.

Iowa took a 21-14 halftime lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Coker with 31 seconds left in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes outgained the Boilermakers 257 yards to 117 and held the ball for more than 19 minutes in the first half.

Iowa’s Mike Meyer kicked a 38-yard field goal, and then Vandenberg connected with McNutt again for a 51-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Iowa a 31-14 lead.

Ralph Bolden’s 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter after TerBush returned to the game cut Iowa’s lead to 31-21.

Marve re-entered the game on a fourth-and-18 situation and completed a 22-yard pass to Edison. He closed the drive with what looked like a touchdown run, but he fumbled into the pylon for a touchback, and Iowa took over.

Creston man arrested Friday morning on multiple charges, including ID theft

Police in the Taylor County community of Lenox reported Friday evening, a Creston man was arrested shortly after 1-a.m. Friday, on multiple charges stemming from his alleged Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle. Officials say 24-year old Antonio Gutierres, of Creston, faces felony Forgery and Identity theft charges, along with citations for Failure to have a driver’s license, failure to have insurance, and eluding.

The events leading up to Gutierres’ arrest began when Lenox Police were notified of a medical call at Village Park Apartments at 12:55-a.m., Friday. While responding, the officer activated his emergency lights in an attempt to safely pass a car on County Road J-13. The car refused to yield to the police Vehicle. The ambulance arrived at the scene with adequate personnel.

The officer then determined he should attempt to stop the vehicle he had attempted to pass, to learn why the driver failed to yield. The vehicle was pursued for over 2 miles before finally pulling over. When the driver was questioned, he presented the officer with a Nebraska ID card identifying him as Raul Pena. The officer determined the ID card was a forgery and the driver placed under arrest.

During a search of the suspect, another ID card was found that identified him as Antonio Gutierres. The felony charges were leveled against Gutierres after he was brought to the Taylor County Jail, and following an investigation into the false ID’s. Gutierres was being held in the jail Friday evening. The vehicle was driving was impounded.

Iowa State Shocks No. 2 Oklahoma State

AMES, Iowa (AP) – This was supposed to be so easy for Oklahoma State.  The second-ranked Cowboys came into Ames set to cruise past overmatched Iowa State, and set up a showdown with rival Oklahoma at home. With a spot in the BCS title game on the line.  Then Oklahoma State let the upstart Cyclones hang around just long enough to derail all those national title hopes.  Backup running back Jeff Woody scored on a 4-yard run in the second overtime and Iowa State stunned second-ranked Oklahoma State 37-31 on Friday night, opening the door for a couple of one-loss teams.
The Cyclones (6-4, 3-4 Big 12) overcame a 17-point deficit to beat the Cowboys (10-1, 7-1 Big 12), opening a path for the Oregon or Alabama to face LSU in a rematch for the title.
“This one stings. This one’s tough,” said Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden, who threw three interceptions.  None of those stung more than his first pass in the second overtime, which was intercepted by Ter’Ran Benton. Woody ran for 6 and 15 yards, then bullied his way into the end zone to give the Cyclones their first victory over a top-five opponent in school history.  Weeden threw for 476 yards, but the Cowboys’ offense turned it over five times.
“I hate it for the guys. But it’s real simple. If you lose the turnover battle in such a big fashion, it’s extremely hard to win a game, especially on the road,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said.
Playing a day after Oklahoma State women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke and three others were killed in a plane crash, the Cowboys were 27-point favorites against the upstart Cyclones.
Iowa State lost its first four Big 12 games and entered play 0-56-2 against teams ranked sixth or higher in The Associated Press poll.
Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads has had some signature wins in his three seasons in Ames – but none as big as this.
“We got a group of young men that put their hard hats on every day and just continue to go to work,” Rhoads said. “I could not be prouder of the effort they put out tonight.”
Iowa State freshman quarterback Jared Barnett found James White for a 25-yard touchdown on the first play of extra time, but Weeden answered with a 6-yard TD pass to Josh Cooper.
Benton’s interception set up a thrilling finish for the Cyclones and Rhoads, the defensive coordinator at Pittsburgh when it upset No. 2 West Virginia in 2007.
Barnett finished with 376 yards passing and three TDs for Iowa State.
Oklahoma State stretched its lead to 24-7 less than 3 minutes into the second half and looked set to break it open as it usually does. Tracy Moore caught Weeden’s pass in traffic and stumbled 30 yards for the touchdown.  That could have been it for Iowa State – but the Cyclones were far from finished.
Iowa State answered with a 32-yard TD run from White and Zach Guyer’s 24-yard field goal made it 24-17 with 4:04 left in the third quarter.
Oklahoma State came in averaging 51.7 points a game, but it couldn’t string together the drives that made Weeden a serious Heisman Trophy contender.  Iowa State took advantage, tying the game at 24 with 5:30 left in regulation when Barnett found a Albert Gary sliding in the end zone for a 7-yard TD catch. Oklahoma State’s Alex Elkins intercepted Barnett’s pass with 3:17 left, but Quinn Sharp pushed a 37-yard field goal right, just over the upright, with 1:17 to go to force overtime.  It was just the third missed field goal in 20 tries for Sharp.
Iowa State knew it would need a lot of breaks to pull off the upset.
The Cyclones caught a few early, recovering a fumble and intercepting Weeden’s pass in the first quarter. But they didn’t turn either into points, and the Cowboys’ defense made them pay for it.   Linebacker Shaun Lewis jumped Barnett’s pass and took it back 70 yards for a touchdown, giving Oklahoma State a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.  Iowa State pulled to 10-7 on Barnett’s 16-yard TD pass to Darius Reynolds. But Blackmon stopped short and went high for Weeden’s pass over a pair of defenders on a 27-yard touchdown reception, giving Oklahoma State a 17-7 lead with 5:26 left before halftime.
“They came out ready to play. They came high with the crowd, getting them going. It was a good environment to play in. But this is why we play football, to win in positions like this. We just needed to finish,” Blackmon said.
Iowa State held a moment of silence before the game to honor Budke, assistant Miranda Serna and two others who were killed Thursday when their single-engine plane crashed during a recruiting trip in Arkansas.
“The plane crash, for the families and people involved, is just tragic, and honestly, I would have said this no matter the outcome of the game. It’s so much more important than this game,” Gundy said. “These guys wanted to go out and play the best they couldfor themselves, for us, the fans, and for OSU, and it just didn’t come out in their favor tonight.”

2 Arrested in Adams County

The Adams County Sheriff’s office reports the arrest of two men Friday night and Saturday morning in separate incidents.

21-year-old Travis Beaty of Prescott was pulled over on a routine traffic stop at approximately 7:53pm Friday(11/18)  evening.  He was then placed under arrest for driving while suspended and brought to the Adams County Jail where he was held with no bond set until he sees a magistrate.

Also early Saturday (11/19) morning 22-year-old Christopher Shockley of Creston was picked up by a Union County Sheriff’s Officer and brought to the Adams County Jail for a probation violation warrant.  He was also held without bond pending appearance with a magistrate.
