Ex-Bluffs pastor faces 17-years in prison in sex abuse case

News

November 23rd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

A former youth minister from Council Bluffs faces up to 17-years in prison for his role in the sexual exploitation of teens. 32-year old Brent Girouex plead guilty Tuesday to one-count of sexual abuse in the 3rd degree, one-count of felony sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist, and one count of misdemeanor sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist. His sentencing was set for March 7, 2012.

Girouex had been charged with 61 counts of sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist and 28 counts of 3rd degree sexual abuse, in connection with acts he allegedly performed while serving as a youth pastor with the Victory Fellowship Church in Council Bluffs. His Alford Plea to the 3rd degree sexual abuse charge means Girouex did not admit to any specific elements of the offense, but acknowledges a jury would most likely find him guilty if a trial where held.

The charges were filed after Girouex told authorities about the incidents on February 16th, 2011. He admitted the offenses to police only after church leaders confronted him upon hearing from four young men who came forward with the allegations earlier that month. According to court records, Girouex told investigators he felt it was his duty to — quote — Help (the teen) with homosexual urges by praying, while he had sexual contact with him.”

Northern Iowa Cruises Past Western Carolina 59-39

Sports

November 23rd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Seth Tuttle scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and Northern Iowa never trailed Tuesday in beating Western Carolina 59-39 as part of the South Padre Invitational. Tuttle was the only player in double figures for the Panthers (3-1), who led by as many as 35 points. Jake Koch had nine points and nine rebounds, plus four blocks, three assists and three steals. Harouna Mutombo led Western Carolina (2-3) with 21 points, and Trey Sumler had 10, but they were the extent of their team’s offense. The Catamounts shot just 30 percent (14 for 47) from the field. Northern Iowa scored its last points on a three-point play by Tyler Lange with 7:20 to play. Western Carolina then went on a 15-0 run, with all the points scored by Mutombo and Sumler, to close the game. The Catamounts’ 39 points were the fewest allowed by Northern Iowa since the 2002-03 season.

Iowa State Holds Off Northern Colorado 90-82

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Senior Chris Allen scored a season-high 23 points and Iowa State held off Northern Colorado 90-82 on Tuesday. Melvin Ejim added 12 points and Tyrus McGee, Chris Babb and Scott Christopherson each chipped in with 11 for the Cyclones (3-1), who set a new school record by hitting 16 3-pointers. Iowa State needed nearly all of those 3-point shots, as the winless Bears made the Cyclones work for their second straight win. Northern Colorado (0-4) got within 85-79 in the final 90 seconds, but Babb grabbed an errant 3-pointer and Allen hit three free throws to seal a win that was closer than expected. Tim Huskisson had 16 points to lead Northern Colorado, which also gave Northern Iowa trouble before losing 78-69 on Sunday.

Iowa RB McCall Suspended for Nebraska Game

Sports

November 23rd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa freshman running back Mika’il McCall has been suspended for Friday’s regular-season finale at 22nd-ranked Nebraska for violating team rules. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz wouldn’t elaborate Tuesday on why he’s keeping McCall from making the trip. He hasn’t decided whether McCall would also be suspended from any bowl game. McCall rushed for 61 yards in the season opener for the Hawkeyes (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten) before breaking his ankle. He returned for last week’s 31-21 win over Purdue, rushing for four yards on two carries. Ferentz says little-used junior Jason White will serve as the backup to Marcus Coker against the Huskers (8-3, 4-3).
