SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP) – Chris Babb scored 26 points and Tyrus McGee added 17 as Iowa State defeated Rice 90-63 in the South Padre Island Invitational on Saturday night. Chris Allen and Scott Christopherson scored 10 points each for the Cyclones (5-1). Melvin Ejim had eight points and 11 rebounds. Tamir Jackson scored 13 points and Lucas Kuipers 11 for the Owls (4-2). Allen’s 3-pointer with 13:30 remaining in the first half commenced a 13-0 run that gave the Cyclones permanent control of the game. McGee ended the surge with consecutive 3-pointers, the second giving Iowa State a 26-16 lead. The Cyclones led by 29 points in the second half.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP) – Anthony James scored 22 points to lead Northern Iowa to a 79-62 victory against Providence in the South Padre Island Invitational on Saturday night. Seth Tuttle had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Jake Koch 13 points for the Panthers (5-1), who won their fourth straight game. Vincent Council scored 26 points, LaDontae Henton 16 and Gerard Coleman 13 for the Friars (4-2). Henton had nine rebounds. The Panthers, who defeated a Big East school for the first time in 10 tries, led 40-34 with 15:21 remaining. An 11-2 run over the next 1:44, in which Koch scored six points, gave them control of the game for good.

Northern Iowa and Iowa State were both 4-0 at the South Padre Invitational. The teams play at Iowa State on Wednesday.

FREEPORT, Bahamas (AP) — Samantha Logic gave Iowa a glimpse of a bright future despite a tough early season loss. The Hawkeyes lost to No. 5 Texas A&M 74-58 on Saturday, but their 5-foot-9 freshman guard had 16 points and nine rebounds, including five offensive boards in the Lucaya Division championship game at the Junkanoo Jam. Sydney Carter led A&M with 21 points, including 17 in the first half. Adaora Elonu added 13 points for the defending national champs and Kelsey Bone scored 12 points, 10 in the second half. Logic hit 7 of 15 from the field and 2 of 2 free throws for her 16 points. Carter hit 6 of 16 shots and 9 of 10 free throws, adding four steals and four assists to earn MVP honors. Texas A&M forced 25 turnovers, while only turning the ball over 13 times.

Iowa (4-2) hosts Virginia Tech on Wednesday, and the Aggies enter a challenging stretch with a game against No. 15 Purdue on Dec. 4, followed by a visit to No. 2 Connecticut on Dec. 6.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska’s priority is to heal up during the weeklong wait to find out its bowl destination. The 22nd-ranked Cornhuskers’ first run through the Big Ten took a physical toll. Five starters were injured or re-injured in Friday’s 20-7 win over Iowa. Coach Bo Pelini praised his team’s resolve for playing so well under the circumstances. The Huskers (9-3, 5-3 Big Ten) will find out Dec. 4 where they’ll go for a bowl. Offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles said he and his teammates are disappointed that they won’t be playing for a league title, as they did the last two years in the Big 12, but they are excited about the prospect of winning 10 games for a third straight season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Matt Gatens scored 22 points Saturday as Iowa beat IPFW 82-72. Bryce Cartwright and Zach McCabe each scored 12 points for the Hawkeyes (4-2), who had 33 points off turnovers. Frank Gaines scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting to lead IPFW (2-2). Marion Hines scored 13 points and Trey McCorkle added 12 for the Mastodons. The Hawkeyes came through in a sloppy game to snap a two-game losing streak. The teams combined for 39 turnovers and 43 fouls. Iowa led by 10 points at halftime, but IPFW stayed with the Hawkeyes for most of the second half. The Mastodons cut the deficit to 73-69 with 2:15 left, but Iowa’s McCabe and Devyn Marble answered with consecutive baskets to secure the win.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Landry Jones threw for 256 yards, Blake Bell punched in two short touchdown runs and No. 12 Oklahoma set up a Bedlam showdown for the Big 12 championship by beating Iowa State. Trey Franks finished with 88 yards rushing on two long reverses to set up scores for the Sooners (9-2, 6-2 Big 12), and Michael Hunnicutt matched his career-high with four field goals. Rebounding after allowing a school-record 616 yards allowed last week in a 45-38 loss at Baylor, Oklahoma held Iowa State (6-5, 3-5) to a season-low 245 yards and only let the Cyclones score after James Winchester’s snap sailed over the head of punter Tress Way in the first quarter. Oklahoma will visit No. 4 Oklahoma State next week with the winner earning the Big 12 title.

The Cyclones didn’t sustain a drive for longer than 35 yards and got their only points on Jared Barnett’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Albert Gary one play after Oklahoma’s botched punt. They got shut out the rest of the way, failing in their chance to pull off another monumental upset eight days after the biggest win in school history last week against then-No. 2 Oklahoma State. Iowa State hasn’t beaten ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks since 1974 and was trying to win for just the sixth time in 76 meetings with Oklahoma all time.

Each team turned it over four times in a game played in front of thousands of empty seats at sold-out Owen Field, with winds sustained at over 30 mph and gusting beyond 40 mph. The Sooners were able to find enough offense to win it. Bell scored on a 3-yard run and a 1-yarder, and Oklahoma settled for field goals on four other red zone possessions. After being practically unstoppable in the scoring zone a week ago at Baylor, Bell ran into trouble early on against the Cyclones. He was stuffed on Oklahoma’s first red zone possession, leading to Hunnicutt’s 20-yard field goal, and then threw an interception to Jake Knott the next time. But the Sooners kept going back to their third-string quarterback, who last week joined J.C. Watts and Jamelle Holieway as the only quarterbacks in the program’s history with four rushing TDs in a game. He scored on a 3-yard keeper in the second quarterto give Oklahoma the lead to stay, then smashed his way into the end zone from a yard out on the next possession to make it 17-6.

Hunnicutt added field goals from 28 and 36 yards to push the halftime lead to 23-6, and he provided the only points of the second half on a 21-yarder. Franks set it up with a 45-yard reverse, getting tackled at the 1-yard line before the Sooners’ goal line offense got stuffed. Jones failed to throw a touchdown pass for the second straight game and had two interceptions. Barnett finished with 125 yards on 13-for-28 passing with one interception, losing for the first time in four career starts. He also fumbled a first-quarter handoff to James White, after White had already fumbled on his first carry of the game.

The Cyclones also turned it over when linebacker Jevohn Miller muffed a kickoff that was blown around by the wind, leading to Hunnicutt’s third field goal of the opening half. Iowa State had its lowest yardage output since being held to 183 in a 52-0 shutout at Oklahoma last season.
