Iowa Defeats Central Arkansas 105-64

Sports

December 20th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — In what’s often been a trying stretch for Iowa, the Hawkeyes finally got to clear out the bench and savor an easy victory. Devyn Marble had 19 points and six assists, freshman Aaron White added 17 points and Iowa pounded Central Arkansas 105-64 on Monday night. Melsahn Basabe had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Hawkeyes (7-5), who cracked the 100-point barrier for just the second time under coach Fran McCaffery.

Iowa opened the game with a 24-5 run and led by 13 at halftime despite five 3-pointers from Central Arkansas’s Dewan Clayborn. The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 75-46 with 12 minutes remaining and cruised to back-to-back victories for the first time in a month. Clayborn had 18 points to lead the Bears (5-5), who’ve dropped two in a row after winning five straight. Central Arkansas never led, but it briefly scared the Hawkeyes with a pair of runs late in the first half. This was the fourth win by 20 points or more this season for Iowa, which has shown signs of progress since a disheartening 0-2 road trip against rivals Northern Iowa and Iowa State.

Iowa disaster aid registration deadline extended

News

December 20th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa residents affected by record flooding on the Missouri River this summer have more time to register for disaster assistance. State and federal officials say the deadline has been extended for two more weeks until Jan. 3rd in Pottawattamie, Mills, Monona, Fremont and Harrison counties.

State emergency officials asked the Federal Emergency Management Division to extend the deadline, which had been Dec. 19, because some people weren’t aware they could apply for help for temporary housing. Officials say those cases generally involve individuals and families whose homes didn’t sustain flood damage but were unlivable because of utility outages or couldn’t be reached because of flooded roads.

One person was killed and another injured, during a crash this (Monday) morning, in Carroll County. The Iowa State Patrol says 81-year old Lowell Bernard Daniel, of Glidden, died at the scene of the crash between his pickup and a semi,  northwest of Carroll. The driver of the semi, 65-year old Dennis Paul Vonnahme, of Breda, was injured, and transported to St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll.

The accident happened at around 9:15-a.m., as Daniel’s 2008 Chevy Colorado pickup was traveling west on 160th Street, and a 2002 Freightliner semi grain truck was traveling south on Granite Avenue. Officials say when Daniel failed to yield to the semi at the uncontrolled intersection, his pickup was broadsided on the passenger side. Daniel was ejected from his pickup, which came to rest in the in east ditch. Officials say he was not wearing a seatbelt. The semi came to rest in the west ditch, on its top. The accident remains under investigation.
