Drake outlasts Wichita State 93-86 in 3 OT

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ben Simons scored 29 points and Kurt Alexander scored six of his 17 points in the third overtime as Drake outlasted Wichita State 93-86 on Saturday night. Rayvonte Rice added 19 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and four steals for the Bulldogs (13-9, 6-5 Missouri Valley). Garrett Stutz scored 27 points and Joe Ragland 25 for the Shockers (18-4, 9-2), who lost for the first time in seven road games this season and fell out of a first-place tie in the conference with Creighton, which defeated Bradley on Saturday. Kraidon Woods made a layup for Drake with two seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 63-all. Alexander’s 3-pointer gave the Bulldogs an 82-79 lead with 19 seconds remaining in the second OT, but Ben Smith matched it for Wichita State with eight seconds left. Jeremy Jeffers scored 11 points for Drake.  Toure’ Murry had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Shockers, whose eight-game winning streak was snapped.

Missouri State turns back Northern Iowa 63-51

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Weems had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Missouri State past Northern Iowa 63-51 on Saturday. Anthony Downing scored 16 points and Jarmar Gulley matched Weems with 10 rebounds for the Bears (13-10, 6-5 Missouri Valley). Michael Bizoukas had seven assists for Missouri State. Seth Tuttle had nine points to lead Northern Iowa (14-9, 4-7), which has dropped five of its last six games. The Panthers led 9-3 before Missouri State used a 20-4 run to take control of the game. The Bears led 34-24 at halftime — with Weems scoring 18 of his points before the break — and enjoyed their biggest margin at 57-39 with 4:52 to play.

ALFRED SICK, JR., 66, of Magnolia, died Thu., Jan. 26th, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha. Funeral services for ALFRED SICK, JR., will be held 11-a.m. Mon., Jan. 30th, at the Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home, in Missouri Valley.

Visitation  at the funeral home is from 4-7 pm Sunday (1/29).

The family invites friends and relatives to a luncheon and fellowship at the 1st Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley, following the service, on Monday.

Burial, with Military Honors performed by the Minden American Legion Post #437, will be in the Minden Cemetery.

His sons – William (Maria) Sick, of Blair, NE., &  Jack Sick, of Magnolia.

Manning receives $50k HUD Challenge Grant

The Main Street Manning organization has received a $50,000 HUD Challenge Grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority. A total of $430,000 in Housing and Urban Development Challenge Grants are being awarded to nine Iowa communities through a fund administered by the Iowa Downtown Resource Center and Main Street Iowa.  The funds will be distributed in the form of grants to the selected Main Street programs. The estimated total project cost of the nine projects is more than $1.2 million.

Governor Terry E. Branstad and Senator Tom Harkin joined representatives from the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Main Street Iowa to make the announcement during a special check presentation ceremony held Saturday, at the Des Moines Botanical Center. The grants will benefit local improvement projects such as repair of front and rear façades of downtown buildings, interior rehabilitations; restoration of historic downtown landmarks; accessibility improvements in historic properties and renovation of upper floor living spaces.

The Challenge Grant program is funded through an appropriation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Since the first appropriation in 2002, the program has awarded a total of $4.9 million and has leveraged approximately $36.9 million in local investments.

Legislative Coffees Scheduled for Cass County

Officials with PRIDE (the Progressive Rural Iowa Development group) have announced three legislative coffees have been scheduled for various communities in Cass County for the 2012 Iowa session. Randy Baxter, President of PRIDE, says “These coffees are opportunities to have face-to-face dialogue with our Iowa legislators, Senator Nancy Boettger, and Representatives Clel Baudler and Jack Drake.” Baxter adds that “The legislators always appreciate coming to Cass County because we have such terrific attendance. People here really want to have input into our state government, so they participate when the legislators make time to come to our towns.” 

The first coffee is Saturday, February 11th, at the Legion Hall in Massena, at 10 a.m., with special guest will be Mike Cormack, policy liaison to Jason Glass, director for the Iowa Department of Education and former social studies teacher from Massena. Mike will join Boettger, Baudler and Drake, to discuss education reform, one of the top issues of the current legistlative session.  The second event will be held Saturday, March 10, at the Marne Community Center, at 7:30 a.m.!   The early start time allows the legislators and citizens to attend the coffee, and, be present later in the morning at the county’s political conventions. The final coffee will take place Saturday, April 14, at the Cass County Museum in Griswold at 10 a.m.

Iowa State stuns No. 5 Kansas, 72-64

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Royce White had 18 points and nine rebounds as Iowa State upset fifth-ranked Kansas 72-64 on Saturday, snapping the Jayhawks’ winning streak at 10 games. Melvin Ejim added 15 points for the Cyclones (15-6, 5-3 Big 12), who had lost 13 straight to Kansas since their last victory in 2005.  White, a 39 percent free thrower shooter in Big 12 games, hit a pair to put Iowa State up 64-59 with 1:47 left. Kansas threw the ball away and Chris Babb drained a 3 to give the Cyclones an eight-point lead with 55.6 seconds left.  Tyshawn Taylor led five players in double figures with 16 points for Kansas (17-4, 7-1), which hadn’t lost since Dec. 19 against Davidson. Thomas Robinson had 13 points, but he committed five turnovers and the Jayhawks were outrebounded 36-23.  Iowa State students celebrated the biggest win of coach Fred Hoiberg’s tenure by storming the floor.

Iowa women upset No. 13 Purdue 59-42

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Kamille Wahlin scored all 13 of her points in the second half and Iowa upset No. 13 Purdue 59-42 on Saturday, snapping the Boilermakers’ 11-game winning streak.  Center Morgan Johnson added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (12-10, 4-5 Big Ten), who had lost four of their last five games. Purdue’s Brittany Rayburn hit a 3-pointer to cut Iowa’s lead to 40-37 with 11 minutes left, but the Hawkeyes answered with a 16-2 run over an 8-minute stretch to pull away.  It’s the first Big Ten loss for Purdue (18-4, 8-1), which was beaten for the first time this month.  This was a tough and sloppy game from the start. Iowa led just 23-21 at halftime. The teams combined for 43 fouls and 29 turnovers.  The Boilermakers had won 16 of the last 19 meetings with Iowa, including a 57-55 victory on Jan. 15 in Mackey Arena.

Bank robber threatens western IA clerk with Molotov cocktail

VAIL, Iowa (AP) – Authorities in Crawford County are looking for a suspect who they say threatened a teller at the Westside State Bank in Vail with an explosive device before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash. The robbery occurred just after 9 a.m. Saturday. Crawford County Sheriff Jim Steinkuehler said the man, described as white, in his 30s or 40s with a red goatee, threatened a teller with a Molotov cocktail but did not use the homemade bomb. The sheriff says the suspect, who was also wearing sunglasses, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot.  Bank President Matt Lujano declined comment.

VELMA COVAULT, 93, of Guthrie Center, died Fri. Jan. 27th, in Des Moines. Funeral services for VELMA COVAULT will be held 11-a.m. Mon., Jan. 30th, at the 1st Christian Church in Guthrie Center. Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Visitation  at the funeral home will be held on Sun., Jan. 29th, from 4-8pm, with a family visitation from 6-8pm.

Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Guthrie Center.
