Free women’s health screenings offered in Cass County

News

February 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Cass County Health System and Cass County Home Care today (Monday) announced the availability of free women’s health screenings.  The screenings are made available through the Iowa Care for Yourself program and a grant from the Iowa Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  Screenings include mammograms, clinical breast exams, and pelvic exams with or without pap smears. Karla Akers, Care for Yourself Coordinator of Cass County Home Care, says “Regular preventive screenings help diagnose disease at an early stage. Every woman needs to take care of herself first—these screenings are an important part of taking care of yourself.”

Some age, income, and insurance guidelines apply, but Akers encourages women to call about availability.  Enrollment numbers are limited and services must be completed by the end of March.  Pat Markham, Cass County Memorial Hospital Administrator, says “Cass County Health System providers are available to offer screening appointments that will comply with the March 30 deadline.”

Women interested in accessing the women’s health screenings should contact Karla Akers at 712-243-7443.

Officials say Flax was traveling west on a snow covered White Pole Road (730thStreet), when her 2007 Chevy Uplander went out of control and entered a ditch, where it collided with a culvert. (Update) Woman found in sewer ditch id’d

News

February 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Police in Council Bluffs have identified a woman who was found freezing in a sewer ditch Sunday afternoon. Officials say 24-year old Melissa Ramirez spent at least 24-hours in a sewer ditch before being rescued. Ramirez told officers with the Council Bluffs Police Department she’d been walking along a retaining wall Saturday, and accidentally fell into the sewer opening near 515 North 6th Street. She was found at around 4:45-p.m. Sunday, by two men. Ramirez was said to have been naked, from the waist down. Authorities said she had been apparently been suffering from hypothermia after having spent Saturday night outside in sub-zero air temperatures. Paramedics took the woman to a Council Bluffs hospital, where she was reported to be in critical condition.

Police and fire officials have not been authorized to release any updates on her medical condition. The case remains under investigation.
